Committee to Aid Abused Women honors former Nevada Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa
The Committee to Aid Abused Women will honor former Nevada Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa at its annual Hannah Humanitarian Award Luncheon for her efforts to heighten awareness of the need for comprehensive domestic violence services across Nevada.
Each year, the Hannah Humanitarian Award Luncheon helps CAAW raise vital funds to support their emergency shelter, transitional housing, child care, emergency transportation, support groups, and other services they provide to victims of domestic violence in Washoe County. This year the Hannah Humanitarian Award Luncheon will be held Friday, Oct. 17 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Atlantis Casino Resort Spa. To make reservations, sponsor the event, or donate to CAAW, contact Frank Blakeney at 775-329-4150.
The event will also feature Brenda Clubine as the keynote speaker; Brenda spent 26 years in prison for killing her abusive husband in self-defense. In 1983, before Battered Women’s Syndrome was recognized, Brenda was convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to 16 to life. It wasn’t until 2008 that Brenda was released from prison. Brenda has dedicated her life to educating others on domestic violence and helping organizations like CAAW that support victims of domestic violence.
In FY ’13-‘14 alone, CAAW provided 8,392 bednights, shelter for 234 women and 213 children, and processed nearly 3,500 motions and protection orders for women and families in the northern Nevada community. In this same year volunteers and staff also handled more than 10,000 face-to-face client meetings and crisis hotline calls. To purchase tickets, donate, or learn how you can support CAAW, call 775-329-4150.
About the CAAW & the Hannah Humanitarian Award
Since 1977 CAAW has been fighting to end domestic violence in Washoe County. CAAW provides free, confidential, bilingual services to families in Washoe County as they seek to end the abuse in their lives. CAAW offers men, women and children emergency shelter, transitional housing, protection orders, and support programs. It also operates a 24-hour crisis hotline.
The annual Hannah Humanitarian Award Luncheon, named for Nevada humanitarian Hannah Keziah Clapp, began in 1982 as an opportunity for northern Nevada’s businesses and community members to come together to celebrate good works done in our community and demonstrate their support for domestic violence prevention.
