Carson City deputies make several felony related arrests during weekend

Carson City sheriff's deputies arrested a pair Friday on felony drug conspiracy and trafficking charges after finding nearly 28 grams of methamphetamine inside a vehicle.

The arrests happened Friday, 8:54 p.m. in the area of Hot Springs and Nye. David Pomjoon Kim, 44, of Carson City and Cory Michael Harmon, 24, of Gardnerville, each face felony charges of possession of methamphetamine for sale, drug trafficking and conspiracy. They were taken to Carson City jail with bail amounts of $40,000 each.

According to the arrest report, a Carson City sheriff’s sergeant made a traffic stop for a vehicle failing to stop at a pedestrian walkway, the arrest report states. A citation was issued and a canine conducted an exterior sniff of the vehicle in which there was a positive alert.

Officers conducted an interior search of the vehicle and found 27.8 grams of methamphetamine in the front passenger floorboard of the seat withs several hundred dollars in cash and Kim’s identification cards among the items found. The meth was packaged in such a way as it appeared it was being intended for selling, the report states. The large bag contained 21.1 grams and five smaller baggies ranged from .1 to 1.2 grams. The plastic baggies used appear to be ripped up grocery store plastic bags. Inside the trunk and rear seat officers located two plastic bags identical to the ones used to package the meth.

Officers made contact with the men and read them their Miranda rights. Both stated they understood. Officers received multiple versions of events from Kim and Harmon, with both stating they knew there was meth in the vehicle, but both said the meth wasn’t theirs, it was the other person, the arrest report states.

In other arrests:
— A 33-year-old Silver Springs woman, Crystal Baldridge, was arrested on felony charges of battery with a deadly weapon and drug possession after allegedly ramming her vehicle into a Carson City Sheriff’s Office vehicle.

According to the arrest report, officers were called to the 4000 block of Highway 50 East on a report of a vehicle that struck a building. Officers responded and learned the vehicle left westbound on Highway 50.

Moments later the officer observed a silver van matching the description traveling at a high rate of speed, estimated between 60 to 70 mph in a 45 mph zone, the arrest report states. Due to traffic the officer was unable to turn his patrol vehicle around and advised to dispatch the vehicle was going westbound. Several witnesses standing in a parking lot informed the officer of the direction the vehicle was traveling and the information was relayed to dispatch.

Sgt. Cullen advised he located the vehicle near Airport Road and Highway 50 East. He attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle, advising that he did not think the driver was going to stop. He advised the vehicle turned into a market in the 2700 block of Highway 50 East and pulled to the rear of the business.

The woman, who was the sole occupant, then put her vehicle in reverse and rammed the patrol vehicle, the arrest report states. The officer gave the driver several verbal commands to exit the vehicle. She ignored the commands and was removed from the vehicle, kicking, biting and flailing as officers put her in handcuffs.

The patrol vehicle had moderate damage as did the rear of the woman’s vehicle. The woman was taken to the hospital. Officers located a prescription bottle containing pills that had another person’s name on the bottle and additional pills in a clear plastic baggie. While at the hospital the woman was physically combative and had to be restrained by at least five people including soft retraints the hospital supplied, the arrest report states. Several hours later she was medically cleared and taken to jail where she was booked. Bail: $34,274.

— A 44-year-old Carson City man, David Lesmen Sanchez, was arrested Saturday, 3:36 a.m. in the 2000 block of Marilyns Way on a felony charge of domestic battery third offense.
According to the arrest report, the victim reported her boyfriend punched her in the mouth at least two or more times.

Officers observed the woman had a bloody lip and had blood on her chest and clothing. The woman told officers she defended herself against Sanchez by hitting him back in his face to get him to stop punching her, the arrest report states. The victim told officers that Sanchez smashed her cell phone and that her two children were in the house but did not see what happened.

Officers made contact with the man who was sleeping. Sanchez denied he punched his girlfriend and said he only pushed her away when she when she attacked him and punched him in the mouth.

Officers didn’t see observe an injury to the man’s mouth area but he lifted his lip where the officer observed a slight injury, the arrest report states. The officer told the man he didn’t believe him because the woman’s injuries to her mouth were more serious.

He was advised of his Miranda rights and he stated he understood them. He continued to deny that he punched the victim in the face and maintained she punched him first. He was arrested. According to the man’s criminal history he had to prior domestic violence convictions, one Oct. 7, 2009 and the other April 2, 2008, the arrest report states. The man refused to fill out a statement, claiming self defense. Bail: $15,000.

— A 25-year-old Sacramento man, Allen Anthony Elseth, was arrested Saturday, 6:33 p.m. in the 3800 block of South Carson Street on a felony charge of being in possession of a credit card without the card holder’s consent and five misdemeanor charges: possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, open container, driving on a revoked license and obstruction.

According to the arrest report, officers learned the man had stolen a handgun and other property from his ex-girlfriend that had been reported to Douglas County authorities. He was also driving on a revoked license. A traffic stop was done after his vehicle was spotted. The man pulled into a parking lot of a casino on South Carson Street and refused to get out of they vehicle. Knowing the man may have a gun on him, officers asked Elseth to exit the vehicle more than a dozen times, the arrest report states.

Eventually he was taken out of the vehicle and arrested for driving on a suspended license and obstructing an officer. Deputies did an inventory of the vehicle before it was towed where officers discovered a magazine and ammunition that belonged with the stolen firearm in the passenger compartment; a drug paraphernalia scale inside the glove box, a few buds of marijuana in the ash tray and a credit card that did not belong to him. Officers made contact with the owner of the card who stated Elseth did not have permission to have the card. Bail: $5,000.

— A 44-year-old Carson City woman, Charisse Ann Kizer, was arrested Saturday, 4:42 p.m. in the 400 block of North Carson Street on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance and three misdemeanor charges: possession of drug paraphernalia, and two counts criminal contempt.

According to the arrest report, officers assigned to the Carson City Sheriff’s Office Special Enforcement Team conducted a business check at a casino and made consensual contact with Kizer, asking for identification. Dispatch advised she was on Alternative Sentencing with a clauses for alcohol, drugs and paraphernalia. While she was looking for her identification she placed a tobacco can on the slot machine ledge in front of her.

Officer asked her to step outside the casino so the officer could do a preliminary breath test. The woman grabbed her purse but left the tobacco can on the slot machine, which the officer observed it having an orange straw coming on it. The officer took the tobacco can, which which opened in his hand, where in plain view observed the rest of a tooter straw and a clear plastic bag with methamphetamine, which weighed three grams. She was arrested. Bail: $3,500.

— A 35-year-old Carson City man, Jacob Matthew Surprenant, was arrested Saturday, 8:43 p.m. in the 4300 block of East Nye Lane on suspicion of felony charge assault with a deadly weapon and three misdemeanors: threats, obstructing a police officer and resisting arrest.

According to the arrest report, the victim told officers the man had threatened to stab she and her juvenile son with a fork. She said the man brought the fork up and motioned to stab them in the face.

The victim and her son were outside the residence. She gave officer a key to the garage and told officers he was inside the garage. Surprenant opened the side door of the garage, seeing the officer, shutting and locking the door. Officers then made the decision to arrest the man for obstructing and delaying an officer.

The officer unlocked the garage and ordered the man to the floor. After a struggle officers were able to get cuffs around the man who emitted a strong odor of alcohol from his breath. He blew a .143 breath alcohol content at jail and was booked on suspicion of the charges: Bail: $21,401.

Those arrested and facing criminal charges are innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

On Saturday, April 20, Carson City Community Gardeners and the UNR Extension Master Gardeners came together to get the Community Garden ready for the growing season. For two hours they removed weeds, spread mulch and prepped their garden beds for the season.

In collaboration with Chartwells, the Carson City School District foodservice partner, Culinary Arts students from Ms. Tammy Borreman’s class at Carson Middle School competed in a “Discovery Kitchen Cook Off.” Similar to a mini version of the Food Network’s Iron Chef, the timed cooking competition featured teams of three students who prepared succulent dishes for a judging panel.

Shoe Tree Brewing, with locations in Carson City and Minden, was recently awarded a Silver Award in the 2024 World Beer Cup, the most prestigious beer competition in the world.
