Senator Square: New Star Wars club at Carson High School

Just when things could not get any better, the Star Wars Club, initiated by CHS students, hit light speed at CHS. To date, CHS Advisor, physics, astronomy, heliophysics coordinator, and head freshman football coach Jim Bean said the club has had two meetings so far.

Though at first glance the club may not appear to be that powerful, students, parents, administrators, and the Carson City community need to keep in mind this club is very much like the Millennium Falcon as when Han Solo tells Luke Skywalker and Ben ‘Obi-Wan’ Kenobi, “She'll make point five beyond the speed of light” Solo goes on to say too that, “She may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts, kid [and] I've added some special modifications myself.” In fact, this club deals with some deep and philosophical questions. For instance, the first meeting's topic is: Who are Rey's parents? Answers included Boba Fett, Darth Sidious, Obi-Wan, and the Solo's.

The second meeting was focused on the newly released trailer for The Last Jedi. The biggest impressions were the introduction of the Grey Jedi and the possible return of Yoda. The Star Wars Club meets every other Friday at Lunch in room 212, and the next meeting will be May 5. This new club at CHS, for all intents and purposes, is a Millennium Falcon. Solo says about it, “Look…I want you to take her…I mean it…Take her…You need all the help you can get [and] She's the fastest ship [class] in the fleet.” As Mr. Bean says, “May the Force be with you.”

World Championship Robotics Competition
The team, known as Team Captain, competed in Houston, Texas Apr. 19-22 in the First Tech Challenge,” a league in the First program developed by famed engineer Dean Kamen to inspire young peoples’ interest and participation in science and technology. In FTC, students are challenged to design, build, and program a robot to compete against other teams’ robots. CHS team members included Allan Huntington: Captain, Henry Sturm: Vice-captain, Nicholas Bowler, Zac Frewert, Stuart McElheny, Rylan Fancher, Luke Bowler, Nanami Duncan, and Casanova Segura. The coaches are Scot Duncan and Michelle Bowler. At the World Championship, Team Captain competed against 127 of the best of teams from 35 countries drawn from a pool of more than 5,500 teams. The CHS team finished with a 4-4-1 record in the robot game, performing consistently and losing only a few close matches. CHS students competed and proved they have as good an engineering mindset as anybody in the world.

State Business Leadership Conference Results
The results of the State Business Leadership Conference for CHS FBLA in Las Vegas are astounding. CHS had a whopping 45 top 10 finishes with 13 students qualifying for Nationals to be held in Anaheim, CA in June. FBLA will be fundraising and welcomes any donations for students to attend. EOC Tutoring
Freshman and sophomores must pass Math I, Math II, ELA I and ELA II End of Course Assessments in May. If anyone has received a letter indicating they must retake the Math I or ELA I EOC this year, they are advised to take advantage of exam tutoring after school. Math EOC tutoring will take place in room 225, and English will take place in room 131. There will be a late bus leaving at 3:50 p.m. for transportation. Some students will be retaking the EOC test and are being pulled from class to test in the morning, afternoon, or both on May 1-5. CHS’ main testing is on the late start days May16-22).

Celebrate Graduation with Orchid Hawaiian Leis
Now is the time to symbolically, seasonally, and poetically reward those seniors who have worked so hard over the course of the 2016-2017 school year, so order a Graduation Lei for them. Order a Single Purple Orchid Lei or a Single White Orchid Lei for $23, or order a Single Tuberose and Orchid Lei (fragrant) for $25. The Yearbook is Almost Here
Parents, guardians, and students, the 2017 Carneta yearbook is finished. It is now time to offer congratulations to students, especially the ones whose parents and guardians want to leave a beautiful and timeless memory for them to access in the future. Have no regrets about purchasing one for $85. The number of former CHS students who return looking for a copy of their yearbook, the one they never purchased, is shocking. Student of the Week
Darian Montalvo is a sophomore this year and the CHS Student of the Week. He strives to do better in school and has worked hard to improve his grades. He is a very courteous and punctual young man who is responsible and very pleasant. Teachers and fellow classmates love to hear about the growing success of Darian Montalvo.
