Cash in on the celebration of coins this Saturday in Carson City
Time to flip a coin and cash in on some Carson City history this week.
Today through Saturday is National Coin Week and the Nevada State Museum and Reno Coin Club will celebrate the occasion with events culminating on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the museum.
The 87th annual National Coin Week, will celebrate coin and currency collecting with the theme, “Beautiful Places: Landmarks and Mintmarks.” The Nevada State Museum and the Reno Coin Club, both members of the American Numismatic Association, have several events lined up for the day.
— Historic Coin Press No. 1 will be in operation from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., minting the 150th Anniversary Pony Express Medallions,
with all medallions bearing the famous “CC” mintmark. Pony Express Medallions can be ordered at the press or museum store.
— Reno Coin Club will host the State & National Parks Quarters exchange as well as the Presidential Dollar exchange. In addition they have the 2010 Sacagawea and President Millard Fillmore dollar coins and a limited number of the 2010 shield pennies and 2009
Lincoln pennies. The club will have educational exhibits on coin collecting set up at their table. Ancient, obsolete US and animal coins, as well as paper money will be on display.
— The National Pony Express Association – Nevada Division will be present to pass out literature on the Pony Express and to answer questions about upcoming events to celebrate the anniversary.
— At 11 a.m., the Pony Express will present a program on the colorful history of the Pony Express. During the presentation Pony
Express officials will administer to young adults the oath to become junior Pony Express riders.
— Visitors can take a tour and see the exhibits on the History of the Carson City U.S. Mint: the Historic Coin Press No. 1, the “CC” Coin Collections, How Coins Are Made and watch the video in the Marshall Mint Theatre on the history of the famous “CC” mint.
National Coin Week is sponsored by the American Numismatic Association, the nation’s largest non-profit educational organization dedicated to helping and encouraging people to study and collect money and related items.
The Nevada State Museum, located at 600 N. Carson Street, actively engages people in understanding and celebrating Nevada’s natural and cultural heritage. Exhibits highlight the state’s history, geology, plants and animals, Native American cultural heritage, Historic Carson City Mint, a replica walk-through mine, and ghost town.
Current changing exhibits include Interwoven 2010: Visions of the Great Basin Basketmakers, Rock Art Perspectives: Petroglyphs and Pictographs, Slot Machines: The Fey Collection and The Art of Nature: Images from the Wildlands of Nevada.
Because of mandatory state budget restrictions, the museum is closed Sunday – Tuesday, and open from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Wednesday – Saturday. Please enter through the Dema Guinn Concourse. Admission: $8 adults; free for children 17 and under and museum members. For
