Who was Bob Boldrick and why is the Carson City Community Center theater named for him?
“Who is John Galt” is the opening line of the Ayn Rand’s most popular novel “Atlas Shrugged.” In Carson City, the question being asked by the general public now that the spotlight is on the revitalization of the Bob Boldrick theater is “Who is Bob Boldrick?”
Since Bob Boldrick died on June 2, 1990, there are not many around to remember that he was the all-around go to guy who oversaw that stage productions went smoothly. That same job is being held today by Eric Klug.
Bob was born in San Diego in 1951 and after he married Deborah Rae Savel in 1977, he moved from San Diego to Carson City to work within the theater. He was only 39 when he died. Today, he is buried in Lone Mountain Cemetery and his widow and two daughters — Cynthia and Rebekah — relocated to Oregon.
Though there is not a visible sign identifying the Bob Boldrick Theater, there is a plaque dedicated to the memory of Bob Boldrick that reads, “The sights and sounds in this Theater Reflect the Commitment this man had in Making each Production a Unique and Enjoyable Experience for the People of Carson City. His memory Lives on with Every Performance.” — Dedicated September 4, 1990.
The Carson City Chamber is spearheading a fundraiser to revitalize the theater lobby that has not seen any update since it was dedicated in 1974. Mayor Bob Crowell and Susan Crowell are the honorary chairs and invite those who enjoy productions at the Bob Boldrick Theater within the community center to join them for gala fundraiser on Tuesday, Feb. 12.
The gala will feature a special — and one-time only — production by the Western Nevada Musical Theater Company. Stephanie Arrigotti is putting her special stamp on this production that will be enjoyed in the newly renovated theater featuring new seating and painting.
Eight Carson City restaurants are donating their signature appetizers or desserts: Bella Vita Bistro, Café at Adele’s, Carson Nugget, Gather, Mania Tutto, Red’s Old 395 Grill, The Basil and Sierra Chef.
Brews and wine will be donated and served by The Fox. The culinary students from Carson High School will serve as wait staff.
The larger donors include: Coldwell Banker Select Carson City who are underwriting the stage production, Kilpatrick & Bullentini Law Office, Kiggins Family Dentistry, Plumas Bank, Café at Adele’s, Robert and Susan Crowell and First Centennial Title.
The funds raised will go to the Parks Foundation to purchase new lobby lighting and curtains. Bob Boldrick may not be alive today to see the revitalization, but he did see the brand new theater when it was built. We think he would be proud of the revitalization soon to be unveiled.
