The Brewery Arts Center launches 'School of Rock, Senior Years' in Carson City
With almost 15 percent of the population of Carson City being at least 65 years of age or older, the Brewery Arts Center announces its newest project geared towards that sector, School of Rock: Senior Years.
This exciting new program will begin in January of 2020 and BAC will train, house and facilitate a choir who will learn and perform rock, pop, hip-hop and surf music comprised entirely of people over the age of 65. The choir will meet in our beautiful Grand Ballroom under the direction of James Rossi.
Numerous studies prove that active participation in music has a multitude of benefits for seniors. This program was inspired in part by the recent AARP grant that made the BAC more accessible to seniors as well as the documentary Young at Heart. “I’ve been wanting to start a choir like this for some time” says Gina Lopez Hill Executive Director, “but it took the right person to make it happen."
That’s when Jimmy Rossi walked into the BAC. Jimmy is a retired teacher after 37 years; 20 in the classroom and 16 as a Music teacher. He and his wife Margie grew up in California, but Margie's family has been living in Carson City since the late 1800s. They love it here and had always planned to retire in this great community.
Jimmy’s philosophy as a music educator and director has always been to teach and guide, but more importantly to create a comfortable and safe environment for participants to be creative. He loves the creative process, encourage it, and does his best to nurture it. He plays multiple instruments, and in multiple bands, and he love all types of music, but has a special place in his heart for the music from the 50s and 60s (Elvis, Buddy Holly, the Beatles, Bob Dylan, etc).
The rehearsal schedule for the first part of the year is:
- January 7, 8, 9, 28, 29, 30
- February 18, 19, 20
- March 10, 11, 12, 31
- April 1, 2, 14, 15, 16
- May 5, 6, 7, 19, 20, 21
Times are from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
