Volunteers' Smiles Help Bring Fair to Life
Last year volunteers for the Nevada Fair gave 611 hours in celebration of Nevada’s 150th birthday to help bring back a tradition.
The Nevada State Fair began in 1874 and was Nevada’s longest running event until 2010 when it ceased after fundraising efforts ran short. The closure ended a 136-year tradition that was re-established with last year’s event.
To help make it a success, volunteers painted exhibit stands, cleared away litter, helped at the information booth, worked with livestock, sold tickets and stepped in wherever. Internet sites say a volunteer’s time is worth about $23 an hour, but in truth that time is worth so much more.
“The time spent by volunteers not only helps with the mundane chores and logistics required for such an event,” said Susan Taylor, Fair Manager. “Most importantly it helps create a spirit of community at the event. These people bring the Fair to life.”
The Fair returns this year July 30- August 2 at Fuji Park and again volunteers are needed.
If you have the time to lend a hand, the Fair can use the help. Volunteer forms are available online at: www.nevadafair.com or if you have questions call 283-4718.
“Last year’s volunteers came from their clubs, from their church or on their own,” Taylor said. “They all came with a smile, and theirs are the faces of the Nevada Fair.”
