UPDATE 1:50PM: The fire, which appears to be on Washoe Tribal land, was around a quarter acre in size, said Carson City Fire Department Battalion Chief Chris Mason. Growth control was stopped within five minutes of arrival, he said.

Reno Tahoe International Art Show

What is the purpose of art? Dayton artist Diana Uzzell, whose work will appear this weekend at the Reno Tahoe International Art Show, writes the following:

"I think the purpose of art is to initiate conversation, be it good or bad. Art should evoke emotion, be it good or bad. Art is appreciated and hated. It is mocked and loved simultaneously. Art can inspire and destroy. Depending on the viewer, art can be everything or nothing."

Historic Virginia & Truckee Trail will host its first River to River Ride, a bicycle unsupported fun ride on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 8 a.m.

Riders may start at either Snyder Avenue in Carson City in front of the Stewart Indian School or at City Plaza in Reno. The ride is 43 miles (86 miles round trip) or rides can go as far as the wish and turn back.

Two cubs who were hit by a vehicle in South Lake Tahoe about three weeks ago are on the mend, but their condition is concerning to many who have seen them. They were hit on Pioneer Trail, and the Bear League and others who responded have kept an eye on the two to make sure they are continuing to move around and able to get food.

A 9/11 remembrance ceremony will be held Monday, 6 p.m. at Mills Park in Carson City. Each year, attendees gather at the memorial site in Mills Park, which contains a piece of the steel beam donated to the city from the World Trade Center’s fallen North Tower.

Virginia City

Fun times Saturday at the Camel Races at Virginia City. Festivities continue Sunday, Sept. 10 which is Family Day with a show at noon. The first 100 kids ride a camel for free. Gates open an hour in advance of each show start.

Central Lyon County Fire Protection District was dispatched early Sunday morning, 12:37 a.m., to a commercial structure fire near Toiyabe and Spruce Streets in Silver Springs.

Hello fellow anglers. This was a Labor Day weekend to remember. Mother nature was a little cruel and kind at the same time.

I was fishing high on the East Carson River on Sunday, until it it down poured on us all. We drove down to the Carson River Resort for their live band and bbq and the sky opened up, the sun shined down upon us long enough to enjoy the festivities.

Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery is celebrating the works of Pam Black. Pam has been part of the gallery for over 12 years and this is her final show.

The Douglas County Rodeo is coming to the Douglas county Fairgrounds in Gardnerville Sept. 8-9.
