Thunderstorm threat prompts Fire Weather Watch for Carson City and western Nevada
The threat of thunderstorms expected to arrive in Carson City and Western Nevada Tuesday afternoon and last through Wednesday has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Fire Weather Watch for the region.
Thunderstorms are forecast to develop across the region late Tuesday afternoon then persist Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Additional storms are possible Wednesday afternoon. Ahead of the thunderstorm storm activity, high temperatures for Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas will be in the mid to upper 90s Monday through Wednesday.
Minimal rainfall with an enhanced risk of new fire starts during the evening and overnight hours after a period of hot and dry weather. Zephyr winds Wednesday afternoon may help increase the rate of fire spread, according to the weather service.
Like the status of last Tuesday's Voltaire Fire in south Carson City that burned 135 acres, lightning from the storms can create new fire starts and may combine with strong outflow winds to cause a fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them.
The weather service advises to be prepared for the potential of thunderstorm activity and new fire starts with the Fire Weather Watch. Avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting, or campfires. Follow local fire restrictions. Check weather.gov/reno for updates and livingwithfire.info for preparedness tips.
Meanwhile, a ridge of high pressure throughout western Nevada will bring a significant warming trend to the region with above average hot temperatures this week. Some western Nevada valley areas can expect temperatures to be in the upper 90s to triple digit heat. Sierra valleys will warm into the mid and upper 80s.
