2013 Nevada Reads: 'girlchild' by Tupelo Hassman

Nevada Center for the Book and the Carson City Library will present author Tupelo Hassman on Thursday, Nov. 14 at 11 a.m. Hassman’s first novel, "girlchild," is written in a compelling style of short chapters, redacted pages, and gut-wrenching narrative. The Nevada Reads event is sponsored by the Nevada Center for the Book and Nevada Humanities.

Nevada Humanities Scholar Dr. Reginald Stewart will participate in this book discussion, as well. A focus of discussion will be on the eugenics of generational poverty.

Carson City Library launches food drive now through Nov. 27

Poetry and performance project brings out the best in students across Nevada

Finding ordinary magic just became a little easier for Amanda Aldridge, who teaches high school English in the agricultural community of Yerington, 80 miles outside of Reno. Thanks to money awarded through the Nevada Poetry Out Loud Program, a national poetry recitation competition for high school students, Aldridge added $500 in her budget for resources to help students overcome fears and experience the magic of poetry.

Carson City's recent open space acquisitions need naming, citizen input sought

Events come and go but public land, when properly named and designated points highlighted, usually lasts forever.

Two areas of property along the Carson River, acquired by the Carson City Open Space Program, are deserving of names. That's why the city is asking for citizens to chime in with their ideas about what to call them. The property is located near Deer Run Road on the east side of Carson City.

Tourism Officials: Nevada visitor campaign 'A World Within, A State Apart' resonates with travelers

Nevada's tourism officials say the 2013 spring and summer advertising campaign that launched the brand "A World Within, A State Apart" along with a television commercial featuring the catchy version of the cowboy song "Don't Fence Me In" by Las Vegas band The Killers has proven to be highly successful.

The Nevada Commission on Tourism’s campaign, which continues this fall, has strengthened interest in travel to Nevada among key audiences with results showing significant year-over-year increases, said Claudia Vecchio, director, Nevada Commission on Tourism.

Douglas brings back online county budget challenge

Douglas County has re-launched last year’s popular budget challenge again, inviting citizens to an online conversation that will harness their input on the County budget.

Residents can participate in one of the budgeting exercises centered on the question, “How would you spend $500 to fund what is most important to you in Douglas County?”

Residents will also have the opportunity to make general comments about the budget process, upload photos or videos to illustrate their concerns or suggestions and put a value on the priorities they think are most important.

Opinion: Yay and Nay votes require study

The city’s website does not recap how the board voted after each meeting. To learn how I vote on an item, you must watch or attend the meeting. I try to explain and ask questions before each vote so the public can better understand the process for my decision.

Since I took office, I have pulled many Consent Agenda items that will cost tax payers money for discussion prior to any approval. I believe not asking questions and not having public discussion about spending taxpayer money is wrong.

Northern Nevada Fire Wives host open house, barbecue on Saturday

Six local ladies just returned from an enjoyable, day-long visit to Apple Hill. They were: Mary Bottoms, Patricia Isaman, Mary Morris and Elaine Quilici of Carson City plus Emily Bradburn and Lorraine Scholes of Dayton.

The ladies were six of the passengers on a special, once-a-year, chartered bus that traveled to Apple Hill from the Carson Senior Center.

Northern Nevada Railway Last Star Train Sept. 28, October Ghost Trains in the works

Enjoy a wondrous evening under the stars with our friends from Great Basin National Park as they host the Star Train at Nevada Northern Railway, Saturday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m.

There will be a trivia contest on board with prizes for those with their thinking caps on. Passengers will be let off the train in order to gaze through telescopes at the night sky, guided by the Dark Rangers of Great Basin National Park. This is a great train ride that the whole family can enjoy.
