Nevada phone customers within 702 area code must dial area code for local calls

A new dialing procedure for telephone customers within the existing Southern Nevada 702 area code becomes mandatory in less than a month.

Starting May 3, customers must dial 10 digits – the area code plus the telephone number – for all local calls. Callers who dial seven digits will receive a recorded message instructing them to dial 10 digits.

Feel the heat at Virginia City's 31st annual Chili on the Comstock

Lyon County Board of Commissioners OK tentative budget without employee cuts

Nevada law enforcement campaign cracks down on cell phone, hand held devices while driving

Between now and April 20, Nevada’s Joining Forces law enforcement team will be cracking down on distracted drivers throughout the state. Nevada law clearly states that any use of a handheld electronic device — cell phone, mp3 player, GPS device — while driving is illegal and offenders will be pulled over and cited.

Consider that in the Republican Party there has been a sometimes rancorous, sometimes healthy, sometimes divisive debate between conservatives, moderates, progressives, libertarians, evangelicals, social conservatives / fiscal liberals, social liberals / fiscal conservatives, "me too but slower" socialists, big-government competent managers of the welfare state, the TEA Party, Ron Paul supporters, limited-government constitutionalists, etc. , at least since the Goldwater-Rockefeller showdown in 1964.

UNR launches 'Living With Drought' website, education campaign

With the 2014 drought looming, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension has partnered with other agencies to help Nevadans prepare for and cope with the drought. Today, Cooperative Extension launched its Living With Drought website, a one-stop shop where homeowners, gardeners, farmers, ranchers, natural resource managers and others can find information to help them respond to their various drought-related challenges.

Convicted sexual predator in Carson City Jail awaiting extradition as fugitive from justice

A 51-year-old Mesquite, Nev. man with a history that includes being a convicted child sexual predator, was booked Wednesday into Carson City Jail on a felony warrant charge of being a fugitive from justice, according to the Carson City Sheriff's Office.

The May 8, 2012 warrant, issued out of Kandiyohi County, Minn., alleges that Scott Allen McMaster knowingly violated his required registration and intentionally provides false information to avoid contact with law enforcement. He is being held in the Carson City Jail without bail awaiting extradition.

Realizing help is needed more than just during the Holidays, FACA is setting up drop off locations for new or gently used jeans and clothing as well as new socks, underwear and sneakers.

Report: Lake Tahoe's long-term clarity trending toward stability

Clarity levels within the iconic blue waters of Lake Tahoe continued a decadelong trend of stabilization in 2013, according to University of California, Davis, scientists who study the lake.

Data released today by the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency reported the average annual clarity level for 2013 at 70.1 feet. While the reading represents a 5 foot decrease over the previous year, it is still well above the lowest value recorded in 1997 of 64.1 feet and above recent years' averages.

Nevada Rural Housing Authority hosts free April 5 Home Buyer’s Expo

The Nevada Rural Housing Authority will host a free Homebuyer’s Expo on Saturday, April 5, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Ponderosa Room at John Ascuaga’s Nugget, 1100 Nugget Ave, Sparks.

The Expo is designed to educate prospective homeowners on what goes into buying a house, as well as maintaining the home after purchase. There will be presenters from NRHA, as well as lenders, builders, title companies and non-profit partners.

Kit Carson Toastmasters Wins Area Speech Contests

Jim Klipp of Kit Carson Toastmasters in Carson City took top honors at both the International Speech Contest and the Table Topics Contest at the Area Level on March 8.

The International Speech Contests challenges each contestant to present their best five to seven minute speech. Each of the local clubs may select a representative to compete with the winner advancing to the next level. The finals will be held this year in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Don Gibson files his candidacy for Carson City Sheriff

Don Gibson filed his candidacy Friday for Carson City Sheriff. He is a lifelong resident of Carson City and has seen positive change throughout the years.

Having been in law enforcement for over 16 years Gibson said he has the demonstrative ability and necessary leadership skills to administer the office of sheriff. His team would continue Carson City’s positive change and he will "always strive to improve the quality of life for all of us."

Gibson said professionalism, compassion and sincerity are all paramount when handling community affairs.

Carson City dignitaries go head-to-head March 29 in annual fundraiser for FISH

Come enjoy a great dinner and watch your favorite Carson City area celebrities battle it out for tips on Saturday, March 29. Nearly 40 local celebrities will compete at the FISH, “Have a Heart Celebration.”

Local leaders from churches, business, media, local/state government and those from the medical field are helping FISH by becoming the Glen Eagles’ service staff for one memorable night of “fine dining.”

Fifteen students who gained the status of district finalists after a series of local competitions will vie for awards totaling $4,000 for the first, second and third place winners and their respective schools.

Nevada Arts Council brings arts visioning to Carson community

The Arts Council is launching a series of local arts town meetings to engage in conversations with Nevadans. Staff plans to explore the cultural needs of large and small communities, the role of the arts in the Silver State and to evaluate NAC’s role as a state agency.
