Signups underway for free women's safety class

ApexSCF will hold a free 90-minute “Ladies Day” class, Aug. 22, 6 p.m. at the Bosma Business Center, 401 Ryland, Reno Nev. Please RSVP by: August 19, 2013 as the class is limited to 75 participants and it fills up fast.

This is our FREE 90 minute class that focuses on women’s safety. It incorporates the fundamentals from our full ASAP class and scenarios specifically designed to teach women how to be safer and protect yourself in the face of danger.

High Desert Horsemen 'Trail Trial' set for Sept. 14

High Desert Horsemen, a local horse club that was established in 2005, will be holding its annual Trail Trial at Fort Churchill Boy Scout Camp, Weeks, NV on Saturday, September 14, 2013. The club donates a good portion of the proceeds back to the community. Last year's recipients were: Dayton Food Bank, Kids N Horses, Dog Town Canine Rescue, and Feeding Pets of the Homeless.

Final weekend run of Youth Theatre Carson City's 'Once On This Island Jr.'

Youth Theatre Carson City is celebrating its final weekend performance of "Once On This Island, Jr.," an exciting adaptation of the classic fairy tale, "The Little Mermaid," but with a Caribbean flair.

The show, directed by Andie Anderson, will run a final time this weekend, August 16-17 at 7 p.m. and Aug. 18 at 2 p.m. in the Bob Boldrick Theatre at the Carson City Community Center.

Historic Dangberg Ranch picked among favorite Nevada places

CARSON CITY — For the second year, online voters picked the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park in Minden as one of six standout sites in the 2013 Nevada Treasures in the Discover Your Nevada contest, officials announced Monday.

The Nevada Northern Railway in Ely, the Star Hotel and Basque Restaurant in Elko, the Lost City Museum in Overton, the Nevada State Museum in Las Vegas and the Pahrump Valley winery were also picked, said Claudia Vecchio, Nevada Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs director.

Carson City Author Featured at Fall Festival and Chili Cook Off

The second annual Fall Festival and Chili Cook Off will return to the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Complex on Saturday, September 14, 2013. The event will begin at 10:00 am and run until 4:00 pm. West Nile Virus confirmed in Carson City; treatment of areas begins this week

The presence of West Nile Virus has been confirmed at three test sites in Carson City, the Nevada Department of Agriculture has confirmed.

Officials tested wetlands, ditches and other small bodies of water primarily along the I-580 freeway. On Monday it was confirmed the virus is present at three of the sites tested.

Carson City Horseshoe Club celebrates 40th anniversary

The Carson HorseShoe is celebrating 40 years by bringing back some old favorites and starting some new ones.

This August 3 the family-owned and operated HorseShoe Club Casino located in Downtown Carson City, is celebrating their 40th anniversary.

The casino was once owned by Gene Chaney who has since passed away. It is now owned and operated by his five children. Carson City resident Jeannette Chaney Kelley has been the Casino's President for 16 years and her brother Jeff Chaney is the Casino's General Manager.

ANGEL LAKE, ELKO COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (http://www.ndow.org) reports:
Fishing varies from day to day, with some days being good, while others being slow. Best time of day is from about 6:00 am to 10:30 am and then again after the shadows start to hit the water in late afternoon.
Best conditions seem to be with a 5 to 10 mph breeze, putting a small chop on the water.
A few fish are being taken with small dry flies, mostly yellow in color, but most of the luck is still coming with nymphs below an indicator or dry fly.

Nevada Arts Council awards 2014 Folklife Apprenticeship opportunities

The Nevada Arts Council has awarded five Folklife Apprenticeship grants for 2014. The grants support projects developed by master artists and apprentices who share a common cultural background and an interest in preserving a specific traditional art.

A panel of specialists reviewed seven applications that requested $15,300 to support the work of master artists, along with supplies, tools, materials and related travel costs necessary to complete the apprenticeship. Five applicants were approved for full funding by the NAC board in June.

Proctor Street. The weed coalition is a group of public and private landowners who work together to reduce the number of invasive weeds in our City.

Bison Fire Wednesday morning update: 78 homes voluntarily evacuated

Voluntary evacuations of a Smith Valley subdivision are underway as firefighters held flames along a ridge above to stop them from spreading into homes, the Bureau of Land Management reports this morning. Firefighters overnight were able to reinforce the line, with the day shift continuing its efforts today.

'Walking lecture' on July 18 features history of Carson City trees

The Carson City Historical Society presents a free "walking lecture" on the "History of Trees in Carson City" on Thurday, July 18.

The presentation begins at the Carson City Library Auditorium, 900 N. Roop St., at 6:00 p.m. with a 20-30 minute slide show presentation about trees of our area by Kyle Horvath. Then, participants will drive over to the Capitol Ground for the rest of the lecture.

Sierra Nevada Ballet to Perform Famous Ballet 'Coppelia'

C-SPAN to feature Carson City history and authors for nationwide August broadcast

Carson City will be in the national spotlight as film crews from C-SPAN will begin taping a segment beginning July 8 that will feature local history and authors that will air to a nationwide audience in August.

Mayor Robert Crowell and Charter Communications will welcome the national network on the steps of the Nevada State Capitol as they prepare for a week-long visit to record and feature the city’s history and literary life. On Monday, July 8, C-SPAN representatives will reveal the stories and segments that will be explored.

‘Grow Your Own, Nevada!’ classes return to cooperative extension offices

Nevadans can learn to grow safe, fresh, organic produce at home and in school and community gardens without spending a lot of money.

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension will help show residents how during eight “Grow Your Own, Nevada!” gardening classes featuring “back-to-basics” best practices for producing bountiful harvests. Classes will be presented Mondays, 2:30 – 4:30 p.m., July 8 – Aug. 26, live in Reno and video-conferenced to Extension offices throughout the state, including those in Carson City, Gardnerville, Fallon and Yerington.

Susan Haas Named director, CEO of Retired Senior Volunteer Program

The Nevada Rural Counties Retired Senior Volunteer Program Board of Directors has named Susan Haas as Executive Director and chief executive officer. Haas began work with the RSVP, based in Carson City, in 2007 as program director after serving for 8 years as Deputy Chief of Staff for Lt. Governor Lorraine Hunt.

In 2012 she was promoted to Director of Marketing and Development.

Evacuations lifted, Lyon County fire near Silver City scaled down from 300 to 96 acres

UPDATE 10:30AM MONDAY: The Sierra Front Type 3 team battling the Pedlar Fire in Silver City took control of the fire at 11 p.m. Sunday night. As of 7:30 Monday morning the fire was 75 percent contained, according to the latest from Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch. Highway 341 from Highway 50 to the truck route "Y"was reopened. Highway 342 from the "Y' through Silver City to Virginia City will remain closed this morning.
