Don Q's Fishing Report for the week of July 24

ANGEL LAKE, ELKO COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (http://www.ndow.org) reports:
Fishing varies from day to day, with some days being good, while others being slow. Best time of day is from about 6:00 am to 10:30 am and then again after the shadows start to hit the water in late afternoon.
Best conditions seem to be with a 5 to 10 mph breeze, putting a small chop on the water.
A few fish are being taken with small dry flies, mostly yellow in color, but most of the luck is still coming with nymphs below an indicator or dry fly.

Heat wave continues Sunday in Carson City, weather service advises precautions

Carson City can expect another scorcher Sunday after hitting 102 Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

Strong high pressure will remain over western Nevada today, bringing very hot temperatures with new record highs possible. Highs across the western Nevada valleys will climb to 102 to 108, with highs of 85 to 95 in the Sierra. The anticipated high temperature for Sunday in Carson City is 103.

Hot weather returns to Carson City this weekend

After a couple weeks of average summer temperatures, Carson City and Northern Nevada will likely experience another heat wave at the end of the week. Strong high pressure will build over eastern California and western Nevada Friday and persist through the weekend, the National Weather Service reports.

Flash flood warning issued for Carson City area

A flash flood warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for Carson City and south central Washoe County until 8 p.m. Tuesday night.

The weather service Doppler radar shows flash flooding from a thunderstorm on the east side of Washoe Lake. This storm was producing rainfall of 1 to 2 inches per hour and is likely producing flash flooding for areas east of Washoe Lake and was said to be moving north of the Carson City Airport.

National Weather Service activates alert system for smart phones

The National Weather Service in Reno has implemented a weather text alert system for smart phones. A number of Carson Now readers have said they've gotten text message alerts already, the first being a dust storm from Monday. Here's the skinny:

Thunderstorms to accompany record-high heat for Carson City region

Thunderstorms are expected to develop each afternoon and evening around Carson City through midweek as an area of high pressure heats up the Sierra and western Nevada, according to the National Weather Service.

Best chances for thunderstorms though Wednesday will be in the shaded area on the map above. Main impacts from these thunderstorms will be heavy rain, hail, lightning, and strong outflow winds over 40 mph.

The Nevada Division of Emergency Management issued a statement today regarding a heat wave that will grip the Silver State through the weekend and into next week as well as providing instructions for residents and visitors of how to beat the heat.

Dry and windy for early part of this week; Red Flag Warning Tuesday

Dry, windy conditions for the Carson City region will develop late today and early Tuesday as low pressure moves into the Pacific Northwest this week, according to the National Weather Service. A Red Flag Warning will go into effect beginning Tuesday at noon because of the wind that will cause critical fire weather conditions.

High winds, fire danger prompt Red Flag Warning for much of Northern Nevada and Sierra

An area of low pressure moving into the Pacific Northwest will increase winds today throughout the Carson City region, producing gusts of 35 to 45 mph from late this morning and into this evening, according to the National Weather Service.

Wildfire behind Carson City rifle range 'under control' firefighters report

UPDATE 12:30PM: The fire burning near the long rifle range off of Flint Drive in Carson City is under control at this time, according to firefighters at the scene. The mop-up phase has begun and firefighters expect to be at the scene for at least 45 minutes to an hour, according to dispatch.

Carson City Fire Department personnel are responding to a wildfire this afternoon near the rifle range at 400 Flint Drive. Smoke is visible and flames are reportedly being fanned by gusty winds.

Traffic lights working along Carson Street after power outage

UPDATE: A power outage affecting traffic lights from Long to 5th Street in Carson City this afternoon appears to be resolved. A downed power line from a gust of wind reportedly knocked out the power at around 12:40 p.m.

Traffic lights were up and functional at 12:55 p.m. along Washington and Robinson streets and other streets began to follow, according to Carson City dispatch.

Heat wave continues today with record highs expected; Sunday may bring thunderstorms

Power up the air conditioner or swamp cooler and turn those space and ceiling fans on high: Another hot day is underway here in Carson City, with record temperatures expected.

The National Weather Service in Reno is forecasting a high of 97 today, which would beat the record of 94 set in 1978. According to the weather service, the ridge of high pressure hanging over western Nevada is the one of the warmest air masses for early June during the last 30 years.

Forecasters say heat wave through weekend may break records

Unseasonably hot temperatures, more characteristic of July, will prevail through the weekend with high temperatures near or exceeding records, the National Weather Service reports. Today's forecast high for Carson City is 95. The record, set back in 1926, was 96.

A few records are possible today with more widespread records Friday into the weekend as high pressure builds across the region. The forecast high for Carson City on Friday and Saturday is 99.

Thunderstorms and potential for record heat through weekend

A chance for thunderstorms Tuesday and Wednesday followed by potential record-high temperature are what National Weather Service forecasters anticipate for the Carson City region this week.

Moisture and instability will increase Monday with thunderstorms possible over the Sierra from South Lake Tahoe to into Mono County. The potential for thunderstorms will build northward into Sierra, Plumas and Lassen counties Tuesday and Wednesday, and along Highway 395 in Western Nevada, according to the weather service.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno a majority of the state of Nevada especially Northern Nevada has been declared to be in a state of moderate to severe drought.
