Nevada 150 Sesquicentennial events lined up through September

Over 400 events have been held across the Silver State since Nevada Day 2013, in celebration of Nevada’s Sesquicentennial, with many more ahead. Biggest book sale of the year through Sept. 6

Everything will be for sale at half price for more than a week - from Friday, August 29 through Saturday, Sept. 6. The store is open from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. On Saturday, August 30 the sale will spill over onto the parking lot.
Members of the Friends of the Library will receive an extra 10 percent discount on Friday, August 29 only - they must bring their membership card to receive a discount. All proceeds benefit the Carson City Library.
Dayton teacher completes education training from U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum
Submitted by editor on Tue, 08/19/2014 - 10:20amStudents of Stephanie Fitch, of Dayton, Nev., a teacher at Dayton High School in Dayton, will be getting some valuable lessons this coming school year in learning the Holocaust as a result of their teacher having completed top-notch training this summer from educators of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
Fitch was one of more than 200 participants who attended the 18th annual Arthur and Rochelle Belfer National Conference for Educators, an invitation-only three-day workshop for teachers hosted by the Museum in mid-July.

Amodei uses humor to help make mark in Congress

It’s a printout of an email from an angry constituent who didn’t like one of Amodei’s bills. The subject line reads: “Are you insane?” and the message concludes with the sentiment, “Your job is over, cupcake!”
Carson City woman jailed on three counts child endangerment and neglect
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Wed, 08/06/2014 - 9:59amA 35-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Tuesday at a motel in the 1700 block of North Carson Street on three gross misdemeanor counts of child neglect and endangerment, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
The children, daughters of the woman, were found inside a unkempt motel room along with two men with long criminal histories involving assault, drugs and domestic battery. Inside the motel room apartment were beds without sheets, dirty dishes in a kitchen with rotten food on the counter, several dangerous kitchen items and chemicals within reach of the youngest child, empty beer bottles, hard alcohol within reach of the children, and an open, empty can of beans on the floor.
Carson City deputies make 4 felony, multiple misdemeanor arrests during weekend

Charles Roy Dickey, 59, was taken into custody and was being held without bail awaiting extradition, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
Carson City man faces felony drug charges after meth found inside shoe
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Thu, 07/31/2014 - 10:15amA 23-year-old Carson City man was arrested Wednesday on felony drug charges, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said. Troy Lee Lindsey was booked on the felony charges after officers found two baggies of suspected methamphetamine in the man’s shoe.
According to the arrest report, a Carson City Sheriff’s Office Special Enforcement Team officer observed the man make a sudden turn on North Roop Street to East Washington at 9:26 p.m., nearly causing a collision between himself and another vehicle.
Committee vote sets Northern Nevada lands bills on path to final House passage

The compromise agreement was made possible after adjustments to the legislation were made to a version passed in January.
Man jailed on felony charge of violating probation terms after traffic stop

Timothy Ryan Gillenwater, 25, was stopped after a Carson City sheriff’s deputy observed the vehicle he was driving speeding 50 mph in a 40 mph zone and twice crossing the white travel lane divider, according to the arrest report.
Officers could smell a slight odor of alcohol from his breath and observed four opened and empty beer cans in the back seat of his vehicle, the arrest report states.

Carson City Library, Salvation Army lead 'back to school supply drive'

Pedestrian hit by vehicle at Washington and Stewart streets
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 07/22/2014 - 3:26pmUPDATE: Carson City firefighters responded this afternoon to a 50-year-old woman struck by a vehicle in the area of Stewart and Washington streets. The woman had injuries to her leg, arm and hip areas. She was taken by Care Flight to the trauma ward at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno.
Emergency crews treating her at the scene said she was conscious and alert. The accident happened at around 3:20 p.m.

This section will be open to local traffic only, and through traffic will be detoured onto Prospect Drive.
There will be utility work primarily in the street shoulder on weekdays at the following locations. Minimal delays are possible.

A 31-year-old Carson City man was booked Tuesday into Carson City jail on a gross misdemeanor warrant charge of tampering with a motor vehicle. The warrant was issued out of Carson City Justice Court on July 7, 2014. Bail: $2,500.
— A 63-year-old Carson City man was arrested Tuesday, 9:48 p.m. in the area of East Washington Street and North Plaza on a misdemeanor warrant charge of contempt of court. Bail: $1,000.

The victory earned them a trip to the Western Region tournament in Arizona where they will compete with teams from California, Hawaii, Arizona, Oregon, Washington, Montana, Idaho, Utah and Wyoming.
Tasters go for the bold and zesty during first day of Carson City chili cook-off

The two-day event at Glen Eagles Restaurant, which continues through Sunday, has brought dozens of the best chili cookers from around the region hoping for a chance to win prize money, bragging rights and a trip to Las Vegas for the World Chili Cook-off Championship. The public is invited to Sunday's event and sampling costs next to nothing, organizers said.

Nevada's water resources division to hold statewide 'listening sessions' through summer

These “listening sessions” will provide information to the public on water related issues in Nevada and to listen to any and all comments, suggestions and questions from the public about water related issues.

The initial hospitals were nominated and then a record setting number of 248,116 votes were tallied to determine the winners.
NDOT halts projects beginning Thursday for July 4 holiday travel

There will not be construction-related lane closures beginning the morning of Thursday, July 3 and evening of Sunday, July 6 for NDOT projects including Kingsbury Grade, Mt. Rose Highway, U.S. 50 (Moundhouse-area) and other road work.

It’s just right!
But, when the mercury begins to creep into the triple digits, I am glad I take advantage of the cooler temperatures early in the summer season, because I hate to cook on my patio when it is 100 degrees in the shade!
This is the reason I go straight to my favorite BBQ restaurant for my semi-annual feasting of pork ribs, with corn bread, cole slaw and beans, coupled with my favorite adult libation.
