Every day right here in Carson City there are families who do not have enough to eat. Help us make a difference. Bring in a donation of canned or packaged food and pick out a free book of your choice. Bring your donation any time between 9:30 am and 5:00 pm from Nov. 3 through Nov. 15 to the book store at 711 E. Washington St.
Nevada prepares to set record for most people to simultaneously sing state song

Brian Sandoval and the Nevada 150 Commission for #NevadaSings, a state-wide simultaneous sing along of “Home Means Nevada.” On Thursday, Oct. 30 at 10 a.m., Nevadans will join together to demonstrate their state pride by singing a rendition of “Home Means Nevada” in an attempt to set the record for the most people in an American state to sing their state song at the same time.
Carson City Library staff to participate in Sesquicentennial celebration
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Mon, 10/27/2014 - 11:38amThe Carson City Library will close on Friday, Oct. 31 and Saturday, Nov. 1 in recognition of Nevada Day, the State's annual statehood celebration.
Friday, Oct. 31 is the official Nevada Day state holiday wherein most state and local public agencies are closed. Annually the capital city hosts a number of traditional events on the Saturday following the last Friday in October — to include a parade down Carson Street starting at 10 a.m. 2014 marks the Silver State’s sesquicentennial —150 years of statehood.
Letter: Why we must redevelop downtown
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Sun, 10/26/2014 - 9:45amMy wife and I were on the fence about whether or not to purchase the downtown building at 716 North Carson, previously known as Washington Street Station. After all, the building was more than half empty and had not attracted a new tenant in five years.
A bank had repossessed the building two years previously and had been unable to sell it even as it gradually cut the initial listing price almost in half. And to top things off, the building had extensive water damage throughout caused by a leaky roof, and the few tenants it did have were unhappy with conditions.
Name the Beast Contest
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Sun, 10/26/2014 - 9:43amA Beast has moved into the parking lot at the Browsers Corner Book Store. The Friends of the Library are having a contest to Name the Beast. All children through 6th grade are eligible to enter the contest. Every child who enters the contest can choose a free book. The contest closes on Thursday, November 6th and the winners will be announced on Saturday, November 8th. Winners will receive books and other prizes. Come in to the book store at 711 E. Washington to see the Beast and learn more about the contest.
Original Emancipation Proclamation on display Nevada Day weekend

Open enrollment began one year ago, on October 1st, 2013. The websites had a rocky rollout, but 10.3 million Americans who had no health insurance a year ago now have coverage.
Senator Square: Honors student Wright active in theater
Submitted by editor on Sun, 10/19/2014 - 5:29amThis week’s senior spotlight is on senior Challen Wright. Challen currently has a 4.43 weighted GPA and has straight A’s in his challenging course load of AP and honors courses.
In addition to being an excellent student, Challen is also heavily involved in theater both at Carson High School and in the community. Challen has been a part of nearly every Carson High School production since his freshman year, including behind the scenes as the stage manager of the most recent play, The House of Bernarda Alba.
Halloween Costume Party and Mini Pumpkin Decorating

All ages are welcome. Bring your own mini-pumpkin to decorate; decorating supplies will be provided. A costume contest will highlight the fun-filled event and prizes will be awarded. Costumes are encouraged but must be age appropriate.
Nevada 150 events lined up through the end of October

These Nevada 150 events celebrate all things Nevada and help bring awareness to the 150th Anniversary of Statehood. The following events are held Oct. 16 through 30. Highlights of statewide Nevada Day weekend events are forthcoming.
On Friday Oct. 17, come watch the Nevada 150 Pony Express Delivery, on the south steps of the Nevada State Capitol Building in Carson City at 3:30 p.m.

Man jailed on felony hit and run charge after crash injures elderly driver
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sun, 10/12/2014 - 2:08pmA 20-year-old Carson City man was arrested Friday on suspicion of felony hit and run causing injuries to a 75-year-old driver, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
Christopher Gene Keep was jailed with a $40,000 bail. According to the arrest report, officers were sent to Jeanell Drive to look for a gray Dodge Durango involved in a hit and run where the driver allegedly pulled out in front of another vehicle causing the accident and then fleeing the scene.

Registration open as Poetry Out Loud celebrates 10th Anniversary

Since 2005, more than 16,000 students throughout Nevada have powered up poetry by memorizing and reciting the words of classic and contemporary poets. The public is invited to attend.
All candidates on the 2014 Carson City ballot — local, regional and state offices — were invited, and a high percentage of them plan to attend.

Submitted by editor on Thu, 10/02/2014 - 3:45pmCarson City government officials on Thursday recognized Western Nevada College’s nationally known humanities exhibition on the costs of war, “Always Lost: A Meditation on War,” Thursday with a proclamation of appreciation and honor.
Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell, a Vietnam veteran, has called the exhibit “our community’s gift to the nation.”
A proclamation honoring the creators and contributors of “Always Lost” was presented to Western Nevada College President Chester Burton and Professors Emeritus Don Carlson and Marilee Swirczek during the Board of Supervisors meeting.
Bently Biofuels sells to Oregon company
Submitted by editor on Tue, 09/30/2014 - 2:38pmDouglas County-based Bently Biofuels has sold to an Oregon-based company, in a deal announced Tuesday. SeQuential Pacific Biodiesel, which serves Oregon and Washington, closed on the deal with Bently Biofuels on Friday.
Biodiesel refers to a vegetable oil or animal fat-based diesel fuel meant to be used in standard diesel engines. The Bently Biofuels plant was constructed in 2005 to convert used cooking oil from local restaurants into biodiesel. Capacity for the plant was initially 400,000 gallons produced per year.

Author, Artist Wayne Scarpaci coming to the Browsers Corner

He will sell and autograph his book. Mr. Scarpaci is also an artist and has painted many of the ships he has studied and written about. Some of his battleship paintings will be on display. Light refreshments will be served. The Browsers Corner is located at 711 East Washington Street in Carson City (across from the library).

Explore Your World: A Musical Pilgrimage Through Medieval Spain

Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 6:30 pm, the trio Calliope will perform European music from the 12th-16th centuries in an historical and geographical context. This group has performed in Reno, Carson City, Virginia City, and Lake Tahoe. Trio members Kathleen McGlone, Janet Wills, and Laura Barrett are instrumentalists in the early music ensemble, Consort Canzona.
This event is free and open to the public and will be held in the Digitorium at the Carson City Library, located at 900 North Roop St.
Carson City Chamber and Visitors Bureau have new homes
Submitted by editor on Mon, 09/15/2014 - 3:35pmAs of 3 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 15, the Carson City Chamber of Commerce has officially purchased the Visitors Bureau share of the building both agencies jointly inhabited since 1989. The Visitors Bureau is now leasing space in the downtown core at the corner of Carson and Washington Street at 716 N. Carson Street.
The Chamber will remain at 1900 S. Carson Street and will occupy the space vacated by the Bureau after extensive remodeling. Both agencies will have official open houses in the near future.
