Health and Human Services awards Nevada $2 million for health care upgrades

Nevada will receive up to $2 million to design health care payment and service delivery models that will improve health care quality and lower costs, Secretary of Health and Human Services Sylvia M. Burwell announced Tuesday.

Volunteers needed for library VITA program

The Internal Revenue Service and the Carson City Library will be hosting the local Volunteer Income Tax Assistance site and are looking for volunteers to help prepare tax returns next year. Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds are welcome.

All volunteers receive training in cooperation with the IRS and the United Way of Northern Nevada. Individuals with good computer skills are especially needed to assist in preparing and transmitting returns electronically through the IRS E-file program.

reAlign Movement-Based Pilates opens new Carson City studio

reAlign, LLC, a Movement-based Pilates Studio, officially opened their doors at 623 W. Washington Street by holding a ribbon cutting at their new Carson City location.

Owner Bonnie Lafave was assisted in the ribbon cutting by Assemblyman-elect “PK O’Neill” who congratulated her on choosing Carson City to open her business.

National UTeach program expansion includes UNR

The National Math and Science Initiative announced Tuesday that five research institutions, including the University of Nevada, Reno, have been selected to join a national network of universities in the expansion of the UTeach science, technology, engineering and math teacher preparation program.

Mark Twain at Lake Tahoe explored in Friends of Library book event

Local Author David Antonucci brings his book about Mark Twain at Lake Tahoe to the Friends of the Library Browsers Corner Book Store Thursday, Dec. 4 at 6 p.m. “Fairest Picture: Mark Twain at Lake Tahoe" examines and debunks the many myths and tall tales about Mark Twain at Lake Tahoe.

Mr. Antonucci will be discussing his book, and copies will be available to buy. This event is free and is open to the public. The book store is located at 711 East Washington Street in Carson City.

Burned bear cub ready for winter hibernation after being nursed back to health at Lake Tahoe

It didn't look good earlier this year for a 39 pound bear cub after being caught in a 400 square-mile forest fire this summer in Washington State. But thanks to the efforts of wildlife rehabilitation caregivers at Lake Tahoe, the bear has since made a sweeping recovery and will return to the wild this spring.

Carson City and Lake Tahoe area road report through Nov. 30

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of Nov. 24-30, 2014. Beginning Monday through Wednesday there will be lane closures on Calaveras Drive just east of Bulette Drive due to utility work. Flagger-controlled traffic will be in effect.

There will be work primarily in the shoulder E. Fifth Street from Roop Street to Saliman Road from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. from Monday through Wednesday. Elaine Street will remain closed to through traffic from Monday through Sunday. Please follow marked detour.

Column: At Lake Tahoe and throughout the country, collaboration is key

As the keynote speaker at last month’s National Workshop on Large Landscape Conservation in Washington, D.C., U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary Sally Jewell emphasized the central role collaboration must play for America to protect its natural resources, balance economic needs, and address emerging environmental challenges such as climate change.

“We are moving into an era of epic collaboration,” Jewell said, explaining that regional partnerships across jurisdictional boundaries are more important than ever for the federal department that manages 20 percent of our nation’s land.

UNR geologists continue to monitor earthquake swarm; 50 small quakes, largest magnitude 4.3

Despite its location away from major population centers, a swarm of earthquakes in the far northwest corner of Nevada is attracting attention as it continues to rumble residents this week with several magnitude 3.0 earthquakes, a 4.0-magnitude earthquake on Nov. 21 and a magnitude 4.3 on Nov. 17.

Agencies continue prescribed fire operations around Lake Tahoe

The Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District and the U.S. Forest Service will continue prescribed fire operations in the Van Sickle Park, McKinney Rubicon and Heavenly urban lot areas. Operations will last through the next several weeks as conditions allow.

Biography
Hansen was born in Reno, Nevada. He is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is married to Alexis with 8 children. He works as a plumbing contractor. He was a talk radio host on station KKOH in Reno for five years as well. He was fired due to outrage over comments he made to the effect that the United States should not have such a strong relationship with Israel.[1]

Digital Donation Drive: Donate your old devices to the Carson City Library

It’s the time of year when new digital devices are given as gifts, but what exactly happens to the old ones? Oftentimes they’re put in a box and left behind. The Carson City Library has launched a plan to save gently used and in good working order older models of a number of digital tools.

Between Nov. 24 and Jan. 31, patrons can make a tax-deductible donation of working devices to the Carson City Library at its “Information Desk” inside the main branch at 900 N. Roop Street.

Carson City area road report through Nov. 23

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of Nov. 17-23, 2014, according to the public works department. Beginning Wednesday, Nov. 19, through Saturday, Nov. 22, the outside eastbound lane on Highway 50 will be closed between the freeway interchange and Airport Road.

Nevada Seismological Laboratory and UNR scientists monitor intensifying earthquake swarm

Two 4.7 magnitude earthquakes and more than 50 3.0 or greater magnitude earthquakes mark an uptick in seismic activity one week after a 4.6 magnitude earthquake struck far northwest Nevada on Nov. 4, 2014. The activity in the past week is more than in previous months combined.

'Carson Crusher' Matt Williams wins 2014 NL Manager of the Year

Matt Williams of the Washington Nationals has won the 2014 National League Manager of the Year award, as voted upon by the Baseball Writers Association of America.

Williams, 48, a Carson City native and graduate of Carson High School, was a first-year manager in 2014, taking over what had been a disappointing Nationals team in 2013. They'd win 96 games this past season, a 10-game improvement, taking the NL East by a whopping 17 games.

Friends of Library Name the Beast Contest Winner is Kyra Fields

The Friends of the Library announce the Grand Prize winner of the “Name the Beast” contest at the Browsers Corner Book Store.

Chris Proctor, Fingerstyle Guitar Champion, offers Workshop and Concert November 16

Pizza Factory offers free lunches for vets on Veterans Day

They say there's no such thing as a free lunch. But this Nov. 11, on Veterans Day, the Pizza Factory restaurants in Carson City, Dayton and across the west will treat veterans to lunch on the pizza chain's dime.

"We appreciate everything our veterans have done for our country and want to honor their service," says Mary Jane Riva, chief executive officer of Pizza Factory, which has 110 restaurants throughout Nevada, California Idaho, Washington, and Arizona.

The Carson City restaurant is located at 3120 Hwy 50 East. The Dayton restaurant is located at Pizza Factory 185 U.S. 50.

Sikh Temple in Reno honors Rajan Zed

In a remarkable interfaith gesture, Hindu statesman Rajan Zed was honored with a siropa (robe of honor) at Sikh Temple of Reno (USA). Temple President Gurmail Singh Uppal presented the siropa to Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism.

Talking on the occasion, Rajan Zed stressed that all religions should work together for a just and peaceful world. Dialogue would bring us mutual enrichment, he added.

Carson City firefighters knock down August Drive house fire; respond to several calls since noon

Carson City fire and ambulance were busy late Sunday morning and afternoon attending to three incidents, including a house fire, all happening within an hour of each other.

Firefighters responded late Sunday morning to a house fire in the 4000 block of August Drive. The fire started in the kitchen and may have went into the attic, said Carson City Fire Chief Stacey Giomi. No one was home at the time and a fire investigator has been called to the scene.
