Sports legends, celebrities sign on for 26th American Century Championship at Lake Tahoe

The event: The American Century Championship. At stake: a share in the $625,000 prize purse. The scene: Six days of fist bumps, high fives, autograph signing, photos with fans, laughs galore and some great golf.
A blockbuster lineup of sports legends, all-stars, Olympians and hall of famers plus Hollywood celebrities of film and television will go tee to green July 14-19 at the 26th American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Club.

On Tuesday, May 19, the intersection of Division and Washington Streets will be closed due to tree maintenance. Detours will be signed.

The Friends of the Carson City Library are hosting Rockin’ Rev. Ken Haskins and Carson City Pottery needs help getting ready for an Empty Bowls bowl making event. Dancing shoes are perfect for salsa dance lessons at El Charro’s, but you may want cowboy boots for line dance lessons at Beercade. Practice those newly learned dance moves at Living the Good Life: DJ Bobby G is featuring Latin music. Sing to your heart’s content at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar or at the Feisty Goat Pub: it’s karaoke night.

Carlson, Ph.D., on Tuesday, May 12, at 6 p.m., in the library Digitorium. Writing a memoir can be done as a short piece, such as an essay, or the story can take on a larger aspect and become a book.
Dr. Carlson will guide the process with suggestions for a well-organized structure. The popularity of memoir-writing and memoir publishing has swelled in recent years; we have a story, we have to share. Dr. Carlson’s workshop will provide the impetus to help you get started.

For those of you in Dayton, may I suggest you see what the talented students at Dayton High are up to: their annual Night of the Arts is open to the community and showcases art, theater, music, and culinary savvy.

If you can’t join them this morning, make a point of exploring this treasure on your own. A podcast is available to guide you through the history of the site, complete with narratives from some who spent their youth there. Memorabilia from the school is on display at the Nevada State Museum and plans for a cultural center are in the works. Their cemetery is the final resting place of one of the area’s most famous Native American residents, basket-maker, Dot-so-la Lee. For more information on the Stewart Indian School go here.

The traveling exhibit, Always Lost: A Meditation on War, will be leaving the Legislature building after Wednesday. Spring has Sprung at the Nevada Artist’s Association Gallery at the Brewery Arts Center. Thanks to the Capital City Arts Initiative, art now adorns the Sierra Room in the Community Center: the first exhibit is titled Tuscarora. Think about how art can enhance downtown if you attend the public input sessions regarding the upcoming downtown rejuvenation project.

Assemblyman PK O’Neill partners with WNC Foundation to raise funds for Always Lost Exhibit
Submitted by editor on Fri, 04/17/2015 - 9:26amNevada Assemblyman PK O’Neill, District 40, has partnered with Western Nevada College Foundation in an effort to raise funds to continue the Always Lost: A Meditation on War exhibit’s national tour and ongoing maintenance.
Created in 2008 by Western Nevada College faculty and students as a class project to memorialize the costs of war, the exhibit most notably includes the Wall of the Dead comprised of photos and names of the U.S. service members that have fallen during the Afghanistan and Iraq wars since Sept. 11, 2001.

Today is their one year anniversary, so you’ll get a free book and some refreshments.
