Pickup Filled with Pet Food at Michael Hohl’s

During October, Michael Hohl Motor Company held a pet food drive to fill a pickup for the national nonprofit Pets of the Homeless. A total of 1,580 pounds of pet food and supplies filled the pickup and where delivered to FISH of Carson City on Monday.

NNDA Pioneer Awards to celebrate achievements, business excellence

Northern Nevada Development Authority is excited to host the 2014 Pioneer Awards Dinner recognizing outstanding businesses and individuals throughout the Sierra Region of Northern Nevada on Thursday at the Carson Nugget.

NNDA will recognize Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell as the special honoree and 2014 Pioneer of the Year for the continual difference he makes in Carson City and the Sierra Region. Also attending will be United States Congressman Mark Amodei as a special guest and presenter and John Tyson as our Master of Ceremony.

Antelopes will lope, ostriches will fan, kangaroos will do what kangaroos can, polar bears will wear top hats, leopards with spots will wear spats and hyenas will laugh as long as a long giraffe when Wild Horse Children’s Theater presents “Doctor Dolittle, Jr.”

The whimsical musical follows the adventures of a small-town doctor in Victorian England who uses his special gift of being able to talk with animals to learn more about the world. In this musical, Doctor Dolittle becomes the world’s greatest animal doctor by learning how to speak the thousands of different dialects of creatures.

Douglas ties rival Senators on the soccer field

Wednesday was a special showing of the historic Carson vs. Douglas rivalry on the soccer pitch as the boys on both sides made battle at Carson High School. The feud included a special senior night to honor all of the Carson High seniors on the team as well as a tribute game to one of Carson's teammates who recently passed away. The emotions were all there for Carson, but it would seem that Douglas had the drive to win with equal feelings.

Letter: One Year On, Obamacare Is Working

When I’m asked about Obamacare, I use it as an opportunity to show how much difference progressive change can make. Open enrollment began one year ago, on October 1st, 2013. The websites had a rocky rollout, but 10.3 million Americans who had no health insurance a year ago now have coverage.

Letter: Working to restore the Comstock Historic District

Recently, a few naysayers have written to local newspapers, criticizing the effort of the Comstock Foundation for History and Culture, a 501(c)(3) organization, to raise funds to preserve historic resources within the Comstock Mining District, a National Historic Landmark.

The carnival is coming to town Oct. 30 - Nov. 2, thanks to Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteers (RSVP). Located at Mills Park, Thursday, Oct. 30, 'Family Night' offers all rides for one dollar each from 5:00PM - 9:00PM. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday the carnival opens at 12:00PM and will be jam packed with food vendors, live music, games, crafts, and more. You can buy an 'all you can ride' wristband, or buy tickets for rides.

Senator Square: Theater and music productions, cancer awareness and flu vaccinations in October

Currently playing at the Carson City Community Center is the "House of Bernalda Alba" performed by CHS Theater students. The dramatic play had its first show this past weekend. It will continue this coming weekend with performances on Oct. 9, 10, 11 at 7p.m. and again at 2 p.m. on Oct. 11. General admission prices are $10 at the door, $5 for students. Smiles were everywhere as the tails wagged behind running and swimming dogs! The people in our community continue to be incredibly supportive of CASI’s mission to help homeless, abandoned and lost animals have the best chance possible at being adopted or reunited with families that love them. First of all we would like to thank the community for their support. Our first 6 months of operation have been very successful thanks to you. Beginning today, Oct. 1, our winter hours will go into effect. We will now be open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

T- Minus Two Weeks Until Homecoming

It's almost that time of year again at Carson High School. That one week of school where everybody dresses like a fashion-less hippy, has wild date proposals and bonds the student body closer as a school. This of course would be the one and only Homecoming week.

This year's homecoming theme is "Around the World" and the date is set for October 14th-October 18th. It would appear that Homecoming is looking very promising thanks to the leadership of this year's Master of Ceremonies: Jared Hearn and Sarah Christl.

Carson Hosts Annual Senior Parent Night

Carson High School hosted the annual Senior Parent Night this week. The annual event is brought on thanks to the wonderful guidance counselors in the guidance department of Carson High School.

The purpose of the night is to better ensure parents that their senior child or children are on the right track to graduate high school and to better prepare the parents for the endeavors and expenses that come along with being a senior.

Build Something with Bob the Builder at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada

Bob the Builder and his Can-Do Crew from Home Depot will be at the Children’s Museum, 813 North Carson Street on Saturday from 10am-12pm. They will be featuring kids’ projects with easy to follow instructions.

The Children’s Museum is open 10am-4:30pm Daily (excluding major holidays) and has several hands-on exhibits including a Construction Zone, a Sheriff’s office with Jail Cell, Dinosaurs, Train Exhibits and much more.

Local Canine Recovery Center: “Fall for CRCS”- A Big Reveal That Will Impact Northern Nevada

Reno, Nevada – On Saturday, October 25th, at the Atlantis Resort and Casino, located at 3800 S. Virginia Street, Reno, NV, 89502, CRCS, a local canine recovery center, is revealing their plans to build a campus in Northern Nevada. The event titled “Fall for CRCS” is the launch of a 4 year long campaign to raise $1,000,000.00 to complete the purchase and renovations to a 5.2 acre parcel and 12,000 sq ft of interior space that CRCS calls home. There are currently no programs of its kind in Nevada.

Space tech, manufacturing conferences highlight Nevada's future industries

Northern Nevada Development Authority, Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada, and Nevada Industry Excellence have partnered again to bring the 2014 Manufacturing in Nevada Conference.

This year’s conference will be held on Oct. 1-2 at John Ascuaga’s Nugget in Sparks. The event has been expanded to feature an Unmanned Aircraft Systems/Unmanned Aerial Vehicles conference with some of the field’s top experts, as well as showcasing exhibit booths both days.

Senator Square: Car wash and rummage sale fundraisers this week plus senior in the spotlight

This Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Carson High School Health Occupations Students of America members will host car wash and rummage sale in the U at the front of the school. Pre-sale car wash tickets are $3 and can be purchased from any HOSA student. The cost will go up to $5 the day of the car wash. All proceeds go to help send HOSA students to State and National conferences to compete and represent Carson City.

Senator Square: Full speed ahead with 2,117 students enrolled at Carson High

Welcome back to the third installment of Senator Square. We had an exciting week at CHS including a video message from our rivals from Douglas High School. Their staff challenged our staff to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. More than 50 CHS teachers and staff showed up for the challenge, as we could never let the Tigers out-do us.

Three northern Nevada development agencies have partnered to bring the 2014 Manufacturing in Nevada Conference to Sparks, Oct. 1-2. The event will coincide with a Unmanned Aircraft Systems/Unmanned Aerial Vehicles conference.

5th Annual Chairman’s Scramble Golf Tournament

Thanks to our golfers last year, we were able to raise $2,000 to present to Carson High to send their best and brightest kids to competitions within the state and nationally, and we are pleased to report they did amazingly well.

We want to offer you the opportunity to again enjoy a day of golf on one of Carson City's finest golf courses followed by a very special barbecue to be cooked and served by the Culinary Pro Start and Skills USA students under the direction of the ProStart NATIONAL Teacher of the Year, Penny Reynolds who oversees the culinary programs at Carson High.

Top Tongan military official visits Carson City, Nevada National Guard

With a cooperative pact signed earlier this year, the highest ranking military official in Kingdom of Tonga, Brig. Gen. Tau'aika Uta Atu, visited Carson City Monday, the first stop on his tour of Nevada.

The Nevada National Guard and the South Pacific island nation are one of the newest official relationships created in the National Guard's State Partnership Program, a Department of Defense function that links a state's National Guard with the armed forces or equivalent of a partner country in a cooperative, mutually beneficial agreement.

Senator Square: Welcome new Carson High students, staff and those returning

Welcome back to the first edition of the 2014-2015 Senator Square column: all news about Carson High School. Hope the summer was great for all of our staff and students. Staff returned last week and have been busy preparing for the students to arrive tomorrow.

The bell schedule for Monday will be an all period day, which means students will go to every one of their classes. The A-B Day rotation of classes will start on Tuesday when students will go to their A Day classes and Wednesday to their B Day classes. Classes begin at 7:40 a.m. and conclude at 2:05 p.m. each day.

CHS Football Boosters host Aug. 23 annual kick-off fundraiser

Local non-profit, CHS Football Boosters will hold its annual Kick-Off and Hall of Fame Dinner on Saturday, August, 23, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. at the Carson Nugget Parking lot in Carson City.

Early Check in is encouraged at 6 p.m. The event will be an evening of great food, provided by Carson BBQ, music, silent auction and raffle as well as an induction ceremony for several former Carson High School Football greats into the Carson High Hall of Fame. Names are withheld until the reveal that evening.

It's Your City with Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell

Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell provides an update on the actions taken by the Board of Supervisors at its Thursday, Aug. 7 meeting.

But before that Crowell addresses the success of the NV 150 Fair held at Fuji Park in Carson City earlier this month. He offers thanks to the countless volunteers, 4-H groups, FFA, city employees, as well as the efforts of the Carson City Chamber of Commerce who helped sponsor the event as well as Casino Fandango, which allowed fair participants to park and shuttle to and from the fairgrounds.
