Douglas ties rival Senators on the soccer field
Wednesday was a special showing of the historic Carson vs. Douglas rivalry on the soccer pitch as the boys on both sides made battle at Carson High School. The feud included a special senior night to honor all of the Carson High seniors on the team as well as a tribute game to one of Carson's teammates who recently passed away. The emotions were all there for Carson, but it would seem that Douglas had the drive to win with equal feelings.
The official start time of this match up was at 7:09 running a bit late thanks to the senior festivities. Like most games, this game began in an early possession battle but began to lean towards Carson first. In the 20th minute it was Carson to draw the first blood with a Jose Sepulveda strike from a very long range free kick to find the back of the net.
Just a couple minutes later the Senators struck again with a Carlos Alvarado header off of a corner. The very next minute Douglas retaliated with a nice set up and finish to find the net and bring the scoreline back to 2-1. Then in the 30th minute Carson blasted a ball into the corner of the net to expand the Senator lead 3-1 which is where it would remain going into half.
The second half seemed to start out in an all Carson feature presentation, but Douglas would soon prove that wrong with a goal in the 50th minute after a poor decision by the Carson goalie to come out of the net. In the 65th minute Douglas found themselves on another fast break which would result in the equalizer. The last 6 minutes belonged almost exclusively to Carson as they took shot after shot trying to find the holes in the keepers abilities but just couldn't finish so the final score of this contest was 3-3.
When I asked head coach Mike Alavarez why they couldn't duplicate the 8-1 result form the last time they played Douglas earlier in the season he calmly replied with, "I would say it was mainly due to senior night. It just presents a different dynamic from the traditional starting line-up. Also, Douglas was very motivated tonight and you could tell that they wanted it really bad too."
