Carson Hosts Annual Senior Parent Night
Carson High School hosted the annual Senior Parent Night this week. The annual event is brought on thanks to the wonderful guidance counselors in the guidance department of Carson High School.
The purpose of the night is to better ensure parents that their senior child or children are on the right track to graduate high school and to better prepare the parents for the endeavors and expenses that come along with being a senior.
Some of those endeavors include the senior project in which students must complete a minimum of 15 hours of on a project that includes a mentor and a 5-8 page research paper. More of the discussed topics related to scholarship information, how to apply for colleges, the SAT and ACT standardized testing and important dates on when to apply to colleges. The guidance counselors were also available to questions and here are the most frequently asked questions.
Q: What is the number one reason kids don't graduate?
A: Most of the time it is because students can't pass the proficiency testing or they have already failed to many classes and can't make up enough credits.
Q: What is your advice as far as pacing one self with the senior project?
A: The best way to take care of it is to meet the deadlines and don't procrastinate. Student should always feel comfortable to ask questions and talk to their teacher.
Q: What are you doing to encourage the maximum number of students to enroll in AP courses?
A: As councilors, we ourselves don't do a lot but to encourage kids, but the biggest thing we do would be talking to teachers to encourage kids to take AP courses. We are also planning on having an AP night in the spring for interested students, but mostly the encouragement comes through the classrooms
Q: Most important thing to take away from tonight?
A: Probably to have the information that they need to help their son or daughter and call the councilor if they are ever feeling overwhelmed.
Q: What is the most easily available resource if people have questions?
A: Definitely their councilor, which can contacted through the www.carsonhigh.com website or you can directly call Carson High School and ask to be forwarded to the guidance councilor.
Q: It's early in the year, but do you think our new principal is better encouraging students to go to college and be more college prepared?
A: Most definitely. She is very concerned with academics and is very knowledgeable to what students need to be prepared.
