All Carson High School seniors will be visiting the Nevada State Legislature during one of their government classes these next two weeks. This is a memorable and relevant experience for our senior class and a key component of their civics education. The field trip will be contained within the government class period.

Avatar: The Last Airbender was a groundbreaking cartoon released ten years ago. It featured an ensemble cast of characters ranging from a woman of color to a young disabled girl, all of whom were integral to the storyline and helped the hero save the day.

Just a reminder that proficiency testing is this week at CHS. Students taking the proficiency tests will begin their school day at the regular time of 7:45 a.m., while those not taking the proficiencies will start their school day at 10:30 a.m. The following tests will be given on the assigned days — March 2: Math; March 3: Reading; March 4: Writing; and March 5: Science. This is my annual reminder of my all-time favorite fund raiser. The highly-popular and fun-filled Carson Valley Chukar Club fundraiser will be held at the Douglas County Fairgrounds on Saturday, March 7. This year’s fund raiser will be its 29th version.

If you are brand-new to this area, about now you are probably wondering what in the world is something called a "Chukar?" Well, Chukar is Nevada's most popular upland game bird, bar none. If you don’t believe so, just ask any serious bird hunter.

The over-all winner was Miles Bean with a recorded time of 20:05, who was also the top male finisher in the 13-19 age group.

For the last six years, Carson High School has held an alumni night at the Carson-Douglas basketball game in which alumni are recognized and celebrated. It’s a chance for alumni to come back and visit the old stomping grounds, support the Senators and a chance for us to celebrate contributions and the lives of CHS alumni. The Alumni games will be held February 13 against Douglas Tigers.

The 5th annual CHS Safe and Sober 5k Run/Walk was a tremendous success with turn-out of 113 participants. The weather cleared up this morning and with just a bit of wind at race time, we couldn’t have asked for more perfect weather, maybe even a sunburn.

Cyber-security company BlackRidge Technology announced Thursday it would relocate to Reno from its Santa Clara, Calif., headquarters. The company plans to initially hire 30 full-time employees and is constructing a new cyber security solutions lab.

Be this year’s MVD — Most Valuable Driver — by being the designated driver on Super Bowl Sunday. The Carson City Sheriff’s Office in cooperation with Joining Forces and the Office of Traffic Safety have provided a limited number of water and cola Koozies to be given to those who choose to be designated drivers during the game.

They are designed in the shape of a football jersey and have been stamped with the MVD and Zero Fatalities Logo.

Gerlach – As we enter a New Year, it’s time for artists to share their thanks in celebrating one of Northern Nevada's icons by applying for spring residencies at the Black Rock Desert High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area. Applications will be accepted until March 31.

With the help of the Western Nevada Astronomical Society and the Jack C. Davis Observatory at Western Nevada College in Carson City, students and residents interested in astronomy can explore new worlds as part of a five-year citizen science astronomy research project to study the outer solar system.

Two planetary scientists, Marc Buie and John Keller, announced Tuesday the expansion of RECON — the Research and Education Collaborative Occultation Network — to 60 communities across the entire western United States.

Winterfest is upon us here at Carson High School. The upcoming week will be filled with activites and celebrations for the students and staff at CHS. The theme of Winterfest is WinterFlix, like Netflix. Congratulations to the Winterfest Candidates who have been nominated by their classmates. One prince and princess will be chosen by a class vote for the freshmen, sophomores and juniors. One king and queen will be chosen among the senior class. Royalty court will be announced Thursday.

With our seemingly, never-ending drought going on and on and on, and now that we are in the middle of yet another winter with a lack of snow and no snowfall in the extended forecast, you might be interested in knowing about the all-time record snow depths, state by state, from the shallowest to the deepest, according to internet website www.weather.com.

Through the support of Carson City area donors and organizations, Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH, has bought a “new” used shuttle bus to transport residents of its homeless shelter. The 2008 Starcraft vehicle has a lift for wheelchair access and seats 13 passengers.

It replaces the FISH shelter van that had over 240,000 miles, carried only 10 passengers, and had no ability to transport clients using wheelchairs.

Finding a steady full-time job can be difficult if you've been out of the game for a while, but thanks to a recent $1.8 million grant there is a new program in Nevada that aims to put the long-term unemployed back to work.
Anyone who has been out of a job for 27 weeks or more is eligible, and people who have exhausted their unemployment benefits.

Carson High School Culinary Arts has been named to the 2014-15 Elite 50 by the National Center for Hospitality Studies by the Sullivan University. The award recognizes an exclusive group of high schools that excel in the areas of culinary arts, baking and pastry arts.
