Muscle Powered Hike to Genoa Canyon Trail. 8 a.m. Join us for a beautiful seven-mile hike, with five water crossings and stunning views, on the Genoa Canyon Trail in Carson Valley. We will hike on part of the Genoa Trail System built by Carson Valley Trails Association, a hiking gem in Carson Valley. We will meet to organize vehicles at the Genoa Canyon Trailhead at the end of Carson Street in Genoa at 8 a.m. We will leave half of the vehicles at the Genoa Canyon Trailhead, and then carpool with the other half of the cars to Snowshoe Lane. We will then begin our one-way hike back to the Genoa Canyon Trailhead on Carson Street. The hike begins with a 1300 ft elevation gain and ends with a 1300 ft elevation drop. The highest elevation on the trail is 6140 ft., and is where we will have lunch and enjoy the views. The trail’s first two miles includes uphill switchbacks, then continues 3 miles south across the face of the mountains, and finally back down two miles of steep switchbacks, including a fascinating ridge, to Carson Street in Genoa. This hike is for experienced, fit hikers who aren't afraid of heights. Hiking poles are highly recommended and we require at least 2 quarts of water, sturdy hiking shoes, and snacks. Hats and sunscreen are also highly recommended. Please, no sneakers due to water crossings. Dogs are not allowed on this hike. After the hike, those interested can stop for refreshments at the oldest saloon in Nevada, and at the Genoa Country Store; both of which are just three blocks from the Genoa Canyon Trailhead. Please plan to spend approximately five hours for the hike, plus extra time if staying for refreshments. We will cancel if it rains or snows on the morning of the hike. For further information please contact hike leaders Jo Foster at jf.prairie@gmail.com, (775) 350-0992; or Larry Marinel at larryamarinel@gmail.com, (530) 788-6274.

Fundraiser for Carson City mom battling cancer at Flat Earth Pizza. 11 a.m. to close. A fundraiser for a Carson City mother who is currently battling stage 4 breast, bone and liver cancer is set for this Saturday, April 27 at Flat Earth Pizza. The fundraiser for Mila Mangone of Carson City is from opening to closing, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the pizza restaurant, located at 2010 E William Street. Portions of the proceeds collected at the fundraiser will help Mila's treatment plan. Mila, a mother and wife, is currently battling stage IV breast, bone and liver cancer. Last January she was given three weeks to live. Completely bedridden for nearly 10 months, the cancer in her bones broke one pelvis and cracked another, and all of the vertebrae in the back compressed and fractured, which the result was losing six inches of height. At its worst, Mila's weight dropped to 75 pounds. Since then she has made remarkable strides, but there is still a lot of fight left, said her husband Tom Mangone. Mila is doing this naturally without chemo or radiation, and because of this reason, insurance to pay for costs has been difficult. Doctors told Mila that chemo and radiation would not work at that point, doing more harm than good. "We would like to invite everyone to this fun filled day. Enjoy some music, all day raffles, and silent auction," said Tom Mangone. "We will have a young girl just starting out her youtube page playing the guitar and singing. Thank you to everyone for their kindness and generosity, especially Flat Earth Pizza for the venue." People who attend are urged to tell Flat Earth Pizza staff they are there for the fundraiser, Tom added. Please go to: https://www.plumfund.com/medical-fund/milas-miracle to contribute online. Several businesses in the community are participating in the silent auction and raffle, prizes. To preview the Silent Auction items, to place bids online, or to donate an item for bidding, please check out: https://www.facebook.com/events/2258652681014776/
