Hot August Nights, outdoor concerts, park history walks and more: Carson City region in store for eventful weekend

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days, including Hot August Nights Kickoff Rallies in Virginia City, history walks at Mormon Station Park, pickleball at the Carson City MAC, concerts at the Brewery Arts Center and TJ’s Corral, a Muscle Powered Sunday morning bike ride and more!

Traditional Peruvian music featured on the Comstock this Saturday

The historic Comstock town of Silver City, Nev. will host another free, family-friendly public event on Saturday August 3. Kantu Inka will perform on the town’s outdoor stage, the Silver Pavilion, starting at 6:30 p.m.

Kantu Inka is a duo including Carlos Ocampo and Julie Lozada Ocampo. They bring Peruvian culture alive with dance and traditional instruments such as zampoñas, quenas, charangos, bombos, chacchas, and cajón.

Heading into the last day of the month, July 31, 2019 and we should note it has been a pretty good summer so far weather wise, without much in the way of extreme heat. But as they say here in the Silver State, wait 15 minutes and it is bound to change. On tap Wednesday, there's a preserving family history workshop hosted by the Nevada State Library and Archives, art showings, Wheeled Food Wednesday at the Brewery Arts Center and more. Enjoy.

Guest Speakers and Mo'z Motley Blues at Dangberg Historic Park

The month of August begins with a presentation on “The Great State Embezzlement,” Mo’z Motley Blues in concert and a presentation on “The History of Baseball in Nevada” at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park.

On Sunday, August 4, at 10 a.m., Glen Whorton, President of the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society, returns to the park to speak on this year’s topic “The Great State Embezzlement.” This is a free event for all to attend.

Nevada State Archives to host 'Preserving Family History' workshop

Attention family historians and genealogists: The Nevada State Archives is holding a “Preserving Family History” workshop on July 31, 2019 from 9 a.m. to noon. This will be a basic family photo and document preservation workshop that will include a few hands-on activities.

It’s Official: Downtown Fallon listed in the National Register of Historic Places

CARSON CITY — Nevada is a historic and cultural wonder, abounding with stories, traditions, archaeology, cultural resources, and buildings that contribute to Nevada’s unique sense of place. Together, these revered treasures help bring Nevada’s multilayered heritage to life. On June 27, 2019, the National Park Service listed the iconic Maine Street Historic District in Fallon, Churchill County in the National Register of Historic Places.

Three seats open on Carson City Historic Resources Commission

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from persons interested in serving on the Historic Resources Commission. There are three positions available, each for a term that expires in February, 2023.

Nevada Arts Council announces fiscal year 2020 grant recipients

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Arts Council announced Friday the awarding of more than $1 million in statewide grants to 172 recipients ranging from individual artists to nonprofit organizations and public institutions for the 2020 fiscal year.

The activity is free and all children ages 8-12, with their parents, are invited to attend.

Participants will use thermometers and observe whether heat is created or extinguished. The experiment will also help them learn about Celsius and Fahrenheit.

Stewart Indian School gym begins preservation efforts; Nevada State Prison struggles to open

Carson City is getting better at preserving its history after losing some of its most iconic structures to neglect and disuse. Think the V&T Roundhouse and Children’s Home, though there were many more historic structures that met the wrecking ball ultimately changing how Carson Street looks today.

Heading into Father’s Day weekend, there's plenty of jam-packed activities around the Carson City region. There's Flag Day ceremonies at the Nevada Veterans Memorial and at the Elks Lodge. The Stewart Father’s Day Powwow happens Friday to Sunday and features hundreds of American Indian dancers, drummers artists and cultural enthusiasts. Lace up the tennis shoes for the Eastside Historical tour of the capital city hosted by Muscle Powered. Journey of Hope returns to Western Nevada College at 5 p.m. to settle into the evening. Open Mic Night at A to Zen will cap-off an eventful Friday heading into the weekend.

At the ribbon cutting ceremony held on Friday, quite a number of bees were seen buzzing around the new bee hotel soon to choose their future accommodation.

Carson City to receive historical marker in honor of Felice Cohn, one of the world's most famous suffragettes

One hundred years ago, women in America secured the right to vote in what is potentially the largest victory of women in our country to date.

In commemoration, the William G. Pomeroy Foundation through the National Collaborative for Women's History Sites has offered to gift to Carson City, a Suffrage Centennial Marker commemorating the people, places or things instrumental to women gaining the right to vote in the United States in 1920.
