As we head into the middle of the month many of us haven't turned on the air conditioner because the weather outside has been comfortably, pleasantly air conditioned these past few weeks. And now with valley rain, wind and Sierra snow on the way, we tip our hat to one Carson Now reader, LaNair, who pledged he wouldn't turn on their heater these next few days because, well, it is May after all. What distinguishes Carson City from every other city in Nevada is its unique history, and every citizen of this city should become familiar with how our City shaped the history of Nevada that still resonates today.

Yes, for some, history elicits a yawn, but once you get into it, the history of a community can be fascinating and will get you off your couch and perhaps onto your bicycle, for much of our history can be found within the downtown core where bike riding is easy. Don’t own a bike, well, you can walk to many of the sites.

The weekend is at our doorstep as we head into Friday, May 10, 2019. Even though forecasters say we may have showers this weekend, the cool spring rain won't dampen the fun. We have a bevy of activities lined up Friday including the opening of the Transcontinental Railroad exhibit at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, day 1 of the two-day Mother's Day Plant Sale hosted by The Greenhouse Project, RSVP's Spring Celebration and Carnival at Mills Park, a day hike, art showings, live music and more.

Heading into Thursday, May 9, 2019 we're looking at a few showers and partly sunny skies around Carson City. The event lineup features the RSVP Spring Celebration and Carnival kickoff and family night at Mills Park, a Healthy Communities event in Silver Springs, CASA volunteer information hour workshop, an afternoon hike along the Ash Canyon trail, art demonstrations, live music and more. Good day Carson City and welcome to Wednesday, May 8, 2019. We're looking at another day of sunshine and afternoon highs in the low 70s. We have activities throughout the region today, including a history presentation in Dayton, a Holocaust memorial service at the Governor's Mansion, art classes, live jazz and more. We want to send a big birthday "shoutout" to our outdoor editor emeritus Don Quilici, who turns 85 today. Don and his wife, Elaine, remain active, maintain healthy walks and hikes around the region and have plans for yet another Alaska outback trip this summer. Happy Birthday Q!

CARSON CITY — Since the early 1980s, May has been a month for celebrating historic preservation and archaeology in Nevada. This May, the Nevada Department of Conservation & Natural Resources’ State Historic Preservation Office encourages Nevadans to explore and discover the amazing historic and archeological resources that exist throughout the State.

In celebration of Historic Preservation and Archaeological Awareness month, the Carson City Historic Resource Commission has organized the 10th Annual Scavenger Hunt. This year’s hunt focuses on the history and culture of the capital city. The Commission crafted the hunt to be an event the family can do together.

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Rita Hosking along with Sean Feder will perform a one-night only concert next month in the capital region at the Historic Silver City Schoolhouse.

Here we are, entering the end of the work week. We welcome Friday, April 12, 2019 with a forecast calling for mostly sunny skies with a daytime high in the low to mid 50s. Not bad. Headed into Thursday, April 11, 2019 we welcome Carson City to another day where weather forecasters say there's a chance of rain and maybe even a few snow showers mixed in. Beyond the weather we're looking at a blockbuster day and night filled will activities throughout town. From library presentations, a TV show casting call at the Carson Nugget, an afternoon hike, to a train history presentation, a book signing at the Brewery Arts Center, a CHS theater performance and the Carson City movie screening premier of "The Mustang" filmed at the historic Nevada State Prison, there's something for everyone. YERINGTON — The Lyon County Planning Commission on Tuesday unanimously rejected a use permit proposal for an exotic animal rescue facility in the Mason Valley area after it had learned of litigation underway from the non-profit organization's current facility in Oregon.

Nevada Builders Alliance, the state’s largest construction and building trade association, will hold a first nail ceremony for the Bank Saloon in Carson City on Monday, April 15. Formerly known as the historic Jack’s Bar, the alliance purchased the building with a vision to pay homage to its colorful history.

A new movie that was filmed at the historic state prison in Carson City “The Mustang” starring veteran actor Bruce Dern and Matthias Schoenaerts, known for the Academy Award winning film “The Danish Girl” and Jennifer Lawrence’s “Red Sparrow,” will premiere in Carson City on April 11 at the Galaxy Fandango Theaters with the first showing at 7 p.m.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has stepped up its efforts to educate communities about the threats posed by invasive plants, animals, and microorganisms in Nevada during National Invasive Species Awareness Week, now through March 3, 2019.

CARSON CITY — The Stewart Indian School Preservation Alliance, in partnership with the Nevada Indian Commission, will be premiering a new documentary, “Stewart Indian School: Home of the Braves,” on Monday, Dec. 17 at the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno.

On Tuesday, Carson City held a public meeting to get public feedback on their first designs for the South Carson Street Revitalization Project.

The Stewart Indian School Preservation Alliance (SISPA) is proud to announce that tickets are now available to the Premiere Event of “Stewart Indian School: Home of the Braves,” Dec. 17 from 5-8 p.m.

SILVER CITY, Nev. — Carson City’s recognition of the importance of arts and culture to a thriving community is very much in line with that of nearby Silver City. The Comstock town is known as an "Arts and Cultural Resources Production Center" due to the work residents have contributed in the fields of arts and cultural resources.

Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable and Montgomery Clift are coming to Dayton, Nev. on Wednesday, Nov. 14 when the Historical Society of Dayton Valley and historian Laura Tennant presents a Power Point program with the photos of the filming of “The Misfits” on the streets of Dayton and the Stagecoach Flats in the summer of 1960.

St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Virginia City is one of 13 churches nationwide to be selected for the National Fund for Sacred Places, a program that pledges funds toward saving historic churches.
