— 'Barking Lot Sale' at Dayton Valley Dog Park Saturday. 8 a.m. The Dayton Valley Dog Park will be hosting their annual Barking Lot Sale tomorrow, Saturday, May 18, complete with a slew of festivities. There will be food stands, vendors both local and regional, and a signature bounce house for the kids! The event is only one day, and will go on as planned rain or shine from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. From 4-6 p.m. today, the dog park will be accepting donations at the main entrance of the park. All sales from donations will go directly back into running the dog park, and anything not sold will be picked up by Friends of M.S. after the event. — Flying Pig Indoor Flea Market. Take a spin Saturday, help disabled vets: Capital Ford hosts Drive 4UR Community at Carson Mall. 9 a.m. to noon. Take a spin in a new Ford vehicle this Saturday at Carson Mall in Carson City and help local disabled American veterans. For every test drive taken, Ford Motor Company through Capital Ford in Carson City will donate $20 to the Disabled American Veterans local chapter for a total of $6,000. The DAV And Capital Ford have teamed up for the fundraising event to assist disabled veterans. Funds raised will go to the Reno Veteran's Guest House, The Northern Nevada Veteran's Home to support local veterans. The event is at the Carson Mall, 1313 South Carson Street.

Kids to Parks Day at Silver Saddle Ranch. 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. It’s the National Outdoor Day of Play! Join us for The National Park Trust’s 9th Annual Kids to Parks Day. Across the nation, Kids to Parks Day brings thousands of children to local parks to learn about nature and experience outdoor recreation. Chili and Beer Go Together Like Virginia City and Silver this weekend on the Comstock. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m Whether you like your chili hot, spicy or mild, you can bet the beer will be icy cold at this weekend's 36th annual Chili on The Comstock in Virginia City. Chili and beer lovers will again unite on the Comstock this Saturday and Sunday to taste chili samples from award-winning cooks hailing from all over the west coast, while sipping local brews during the all-new Craft Beer Tour, featuring some of Virginia City's local breweries and craft beers. The 36th annual Chili on the Comstock heats up this weekend, May 18-19, from 10 a.m. through 4 p.m. each day. Sample a wide variety of chili from green to red, spicy to mild. Chili cooks competing in Chili on the Comstock are vying for a spot at the International Chili Society World Finals. Tasting packages start at $5 for four tastings.

Kite Flying Weekend coming Saturday and Sunday at Dangberg Historic Park. 10 a.m. Something in the Wind, a free kite flying event, will take place at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday and Sunday, May 18-19 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days. Join us in our sixth year in celebration of the Washoe Zephyr as Something in the Wind features expert kite flyers Cameron and Reina Kauffman of CoolKiter.com. The Kauffman’s will demonstrate several models of their large and unusual kites, as well as answer questions. The public is also welcome to bring kites to fly and learn from the visiting experts throughout both days. A limited number of kites will be available for purchase.
Also on both days, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., elementary-school aged children can participate in several simple wind-related craft projects and make their own kites (while supplies last) with the help of Friends of Dangberg Home Ranch volunteers. All craft supplies will be provided.

U.S. Citizenship Study Classes at Carson City Library. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. n collaboration with the ESL In-Home Program, the Carson City Library offers free citizenship classes. The 12 classes will help prepare participants for the Naturalization Test by providing information, guidance, and individual support. Carson City museums to mint medallion to memorialize Transcontinental Railroad car. 10 a.m. Carson City’s two state museums — the Nevada State Museum and Nevada State Railroad Museum — are collaborating on a project that highlights of 150-year-old artifacts in both museums’ collections. This Saturday, May 18, the Nevada State Museum will fire up its 150-year-old Coin Press No. 1 for the first public minting of a medallion that commemorates the Nevada State Railroad Museum’s Coach 17 — the only rail car still in existence that was present at the completion of the nation’s first transcontinental railroad at Promontory Summit in Utah. The medallion minting, which starts at noon, is another in a series of “Mint150” programs taking place at the Nevada State Museum as it celebrates the 150th anniversary of the U.S. Branch Mint in Carson City. Coin Press No. 1 was the first coin press in the Carson City Mint and it produced millions in gold and silver coins in its heyday. Events throughout the day. Celebrate Washoe Valley Day. 10 a.m. A celebration for Washoe Valley Day hosted by the Washoe Valley Alliance will be held at Washoe State Park tomorrow, Saturday May 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and park fees will be waived for the festivities. There will be live music and activities for all ages, and pets are welcome as long as they are kept on leashes. WHEN: Saturday, May 18, 2019 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

State Capitol Guided Tour. 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Guided tours by docents from the Nevada State Museum will take place at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. every Saturday. Tours typically take an hour and include both the exterior of the building, nearby memorials as well as the interior of the building. Tours are available for up to 20 people on a first-come, first-served basis. The building includes numerous historic artifacts that range from portraits of past Nevada governors to sculptures to historical items showcased during Nevada’s Sesquicentennial celebration. The Capitol remains open to the public Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Guided tours of up to 20 people can be arranged in advance by calling the Nevada State Museum’s Education Program at 775-687-4810, ext. 237.

Carson City GOP Women to host 'Proud to be an American' event at Governor's Mansion. 11 a.m. Carson City Republican Women's upcoming event will be held this Saturday, May 18 in the Nevada Room at the Governor's Mansion. The theme for this event is "Proud to be an American" honoring every day patriots. Patriotic dress is encouraged but not mandatory. There will be a dress-up contest, a trivia contest along with special guests in attendance. We will also award our 2019 winner of our scholarship at the event. Western Nevada Theatre's 'Crazy for You’ at Carson City Community Center. Spaghetti Fundraiser for David Mickelsen's Kidney transplant. 5 to 8 p.m. Hello dear friends in the Carson City area. Our friend, David Mickelson, is pretty close to getting his kidney transplant. In fact, we're excited to announce that he is scheduled to have his kidney transplant on May 31! We still need to do a lot of fundraising, so we plan to have a spaghetti dinner on Saturday, May 18 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Espolon's Grill in Mound House. CASI's Woofs, Wine and Whiskers. 6 p.m. Join Carson Animal Service Initiative this Saturday in Carson City for an evening of music, wine, appetizers, and auctions, both silent and live, all to help animals in need.
Carson Animal Services Initiative, also known as CASI, is dedicated to supporting programs that reduce animal suffering, including Critter Fixer, our low cost spay/neuter voucher program. Rita Hosking Rita Hosking is an acclaimed and beloved singer-songwriter who makes her home in Davis, Calif. — Nevada Arts Council Presents: Facts and Figures. Daily, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Las Vegas artist Lolita Develay’s works consists mostly of oil paintings and watercolors executed in a trompe l’oeil (deceives the eye) intertwined with abstract features. She is currently exploring prevailing social values in American mainstream culture. These paintings embody her ultimate desire for lush surfaces and the luxury of time that allowed them to be created. Carson City art exhibition 'Creative Spark' features 32 area high school artists. The Capital City Arts Initiative hosts its exhibition, Creative Spark, at the Community Development Building, also known as the Brick, 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. Thirty-two students from Carson, Dayton, Douglas, and Pioneer high schools have work in the exhibit. The free exhibition is available to the public now through May 29, 2019, Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Creative Spark includes a wide variety of art media including ceramics, collage, drawing, painting, and photography that show the diversity of the students’ creativity.

Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'The Lay of the Land' at Carson City showing. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents an exhibition, "The Lay of the Land," by artist Fred Howland in the Community Center’s Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition runs now through June 30, 2019. Howland’s passion is to create a sense of time and place through his photographs. He returns to favorite sites to work, like Hope Valley and Genoa, returning to take repeat images in different seasons and lighting. His interest in landscapes go back to his New England roots where he was more comfortable in the outdoors than in school classrooms. The Sierra Room is open to the public during Carson City official meetings including the first and third Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and many afternoons, Monday through Thursday, 5 to 8 p.m.

"Home Means Nevada" photo exhibit debut at the Nevada Legislature. The Nevada Arts Council is unveiling a new traveling photo exhibition, “Home Means Nevada” that will start its journey in the hallways of the Nevada Legislature during the 2019 session. The exhibition features the works of 15 contemporary photographers, but which echoes famous photographs and artwork from the late 1800s and early 1900s that helped spur protections for many of our nation’s national parks. The exhibit highlights some of the unique treasures found on federally managed lands across the state, from bighorns to Burning Man, to the ancient rock art and petroglyphs in the Gold Butte area. The exhibition will be displayed in the Senate hallway of the Nevada Legislature, 401 S. Carson St. in Carson City.

— WNC Continuing Education offers Zumba classes. Zumba is a dance form and aerobics fitness program. Zumba involves dance and aerobic movements performed to energetic Latin and pop music from countries around the world. The choreography incorporates hip hop, soca, samba, salsa, meringue and mambo. Squats and lunges are also included. Students should wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes, and bring a towel, water and a positive attitude. No prior dance experience is required — Zumba is about making friends, getting a workout, and enjoying yourself! Every month, the Park Rangers offer various Ranger-Led programs that include educational opportunities, historical fun, and exciting adventures. All programs are offered for free and take place in one of the many Carson City parks and open space areas.

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Carson City will host its first "Walking as One at 1" labyrinth walk on Saturday, May 4 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at 314 N. Division at Telegraph.

"Walking as One at 1" happens on World Labyrinth Day each year where participants across the globe engage in a labyrinth walk at 1 p.m. local time. This synchronized practice creates a 24-hour rolling wave of peaceful energy that passes from one time zone to the next across the world. The idea is to collectively contribute to a sense of unity and harmony.

The wise early settlers of Carson City made sure future residents would enjoy the beauty and the endless benefits that come with the planting of trees. What was then but a barren high-desert sagebrush landscape, is today a celebration of the hardiness of trees as well as the early settlers.

On Friday, April 26 at 1 p.m., the Washoe Valley Forum hosts a living history presentation, “The Reno Cure.” Local authors and historians David and Gayle Woodruff assume the fictive characters of wrangler Clive, and cook/housekeeper Vivian, that worked at a Washoe Valley “divorce ranch” from the 1940s to 1960s.

Local musician Liz Broscoe has released a song that features Lake Tahoe and the challenges to keep it blue, and it could become the next battle cry to protect the lake.

Liz has been working on a new album for over a year and she wrote "Mother Earth" as one of the songs for that album. She had finished writing the song when she saw the videos of the thousands of pounds of trash left on Zephyr Shoals on the 4th of July.

A local family and others aided in the search and location of a missing elderly woman Saturday night in Carson City.

Carson High School named Mikey Hoffer and Selma Works as the 2024 Prom King and Queen. A short coronation ceremony was held during the prom dance. Additionally, Rodrigo Diaz and Alissa Powers were crowned Carson High School’s Friendship Ball King and Queen during that dance Thursday evening in the Morse Burley Gym.

Carson City’s Community Development Director Hope Sullivan will be the guest speaker at the next Rotary Club of Carson City meeting. The public is invited to attend.

Thursday evening, Carson City Supervisors approved the language for two ballot questions dealing with an increase in taxes for the specific purpose of fixing local roads.

Conditions and weather permitting, a number of prescribed fires are in the works through spring to remove fuels that can feed unwanted wildland fires.
