Each year, the community gathers along the banks of the Truckee River to watch as hundreds of tiny yellow rubber ducks float across the water, and viewers cheer them on.

Adopt a Duck is one of the Nevada Humane Society’s biggest fundraising events of the year, and this year despite COVID-19, it will continue! However, instead of participants gathering on the banks, this year’s event will be live streamed from the Reno Shelter on August 29 at 12 p.m. and will consist of adorable shelter dogs and cats doing adorable activities.

CARSON CITY — The two-week long Apex Leadership Company training and fundraiser at Fritsch Elementary School not only provided a focused leadership and fitness curriculum that culminated in a school-wide fun run and obstacle course, but it also helped gross nearly $20,000 that benefited the school by more than $10,000 for specialist programs including playground equipment, musical instruments and technology.

Unless you've lived under a rock the past 5 years, many will know the American Ninja Warrior TV show. Cheering crowds, amazing obstacles and Ninja All-Stars.

Now, we've brought that experience to Carson City with a full time Ninja Gym for ages 6-16. Expert youth motivators acutely teach kids how to defeat obstacles and boost their confidence with each attempt.

Carson High School band students were awarded a check for $8,000 from Capital Ford in Carson City Friday night following a successful Drive 4UR School fundraiser held Sept. 15 from which students were able to raise the maximum amount, said Capital Ford Internet and Customer Relations Manager Heidi Aiazzi.

Well Being Massage and Functional Fitness in Carson City celebrated its grand re-opening Saturday morning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell, Carson City Supervisor Lori Bagwell and members of the Carson City Chamber of Commerce.

WELL BEING Massage and Functional Fitness (http://www.carsoncityfitness.com) is celebrating its new location at 1851 S Roop St, #145 in Grand Opening Style on SATURDAY October 6th, from 8 am until 1 pm. The business is owned and run by Brad and Alina Paula and offers a complete health and fitness experience including massage, personal training, group classes, obstacle course and other specialty training programs, and nutritional coaching. The couple has been in business in Carson City for four years but only (since the first of the year) recently at their new space.

Despite the high temperatures Thursday afternoon in Carson City, fair lovers flocked to Fuji Park to enjoy the pre-weekend Fair festivities.

Oh, wow. May is starting off with a bang. Today is jam-packed with options for families, adults, and everyone in-between. The True Grit: Carson City Big Read kicked off yesterday, and today you’ll find the original 1969 version of the film playing at the Brewery Arts Center. The Children’s Museum hosts a Friday Fun Night with a True Grit Buckaroo Sing-a-long. Your options hardly end there. With live music, improv and comedy, theater, karaoke, and some pre-Cinco de Mayo celebrations throughout Carson City and beyond, you’ll have plenty of reasons to hit the town.

Leaves turning, wind blowing, and all things pumpkin sprouting up everywhere. It is absolutely autumn in Northern Nevada. Get ready for Halloween with your choice of pumpkin patches. Seeliger Elementary School is hosting theirs for the twenty-fifth year in a row. Take a trip on the V and T Steam Train at the Nevada Railroad Museum, actually take several trips. The annual Harvest Train event offers an all-day wristband that allows for as many rides as you’d like, in addition to museum admission. So many more fun activities are available to you, you’ll have to read on to see them all.

You’ll see some pretty interesting vehicles on the road these next few days, as travelers from all over head to Burning Man. If you aren’t off to the Playa yourself, there will be plenty of fun around town to keep you and your family occupied. The second annual Family Fun Day in Mills Park is your best bet for kids of all ages. This week’s free concert at Brewery Arts Center features the Dusty Green Bones. Don’t forget your dancing shoes; they’re sure to keep you on your feet.

Cheer on our local motorcycle cops at the Extreme Motor Challenge, or hop on your own bike and go on a poker run with the Lords of Iron Motorcycle Club.

SATURDAY:

The weekends seem to start earlier in summertime. Head down to Mills Park for the first of the rat-rods rolling in for this weekend’s Rockabilly Riot and to catch the motorcycle cops running some practice loops around the obstacle course. Seniors can head to the Community Center for vouchers good at the Third and Curry Farmers Market, residency and income restrictions apply. Join Mo’z Motley Blues on the lawn of the Dangberg Home Historic Ranch for a summer twilight concert – bring a chair or blanket, I suggest some bug spray and a picnic, as well.

THURSDAY:

Paul Sampson broke 27 bones in a stock car crash and knocked out 17 teeth, but the injuries did nothing to dull his passion. “I’ll just always love cars,” he said.

Farrell Hurt is known among his friends and neighbors for being able to transform any piece of junk into a functioning piece of a hot rod.

As the sun sets earlier and the nights get colder, we prepare for all things autumn. In Carson City that’s Nevada Day, but Halloween is just as beloved. Virginia City gets a jump on all things ghoulish with their annual REDRUN zombie obstacle course this weekend – go HERE to register or for more information. The sight of a pair of outhouses barreling down the street with thousands cheering them on in an all-out, old school potty race would probably be considered an odd form of entertainment almost anywhere, but not in Virginia City.

This annual fall tradition on the Comstock, the World Championship Outhouse Races, takes place the first weekend of October and pits teams of three costumed outhouse racers against each other, sprinting down the town’s historic main street, C Street, toward the toilet paper finish line.

LYON COUNTY — This year the Comstock Youth Works program expanded to serve four of five Lyon County high schools and 80 teens from communities across Lyon County, with funding from a Safe Schools/Healthy Students grant through Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey.

Families unite Saturday at Mills Park in Carson City for the first-ever Northern Nevada Family Fun Day, a community event featuring live music, workshops, shopping, raffles, a Kids Zone, giveaways, raffles and more.

There will be rock climbing demonstrations, face painting, pirates, obstacle courses, a bubble station, music, a photo booth, ice cream, refreshments beginning at 11 a.m. and running until to 9 p.m.

After months of planning and preparation, Faith Hope Love of Northern Nevada is about to launch its first-ever Northern Nevada Family Fun Day this Saturday at Mills Park in Carson City.

Monday’s aren’t always known for fun, but the Fourth of July is a different animal. Carson City, Virginia City, Lake Tahoe, and Reno will have fireworks displays starting around 9:30. Minden, Gardnerville, and Genoa aren’t slacking, though. Festivities can be found just about everywhere.

Sunday is the day before Independence Day, but Sparks is getting a jump on the festivities with their Star Spangled Sparks Celebration and fireworks. King’s Beach always celebrates early, so you can catch fireworks at the northeast end of Tahoe, as well. Keep reading: the weekend is in full swing.
