Tuesday Morning Walk - Linear Ditch Trail - East hosted by Muscle Powered. 9 a.m. Come and Muscle Powered for its weekly one hour walks to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City! Meet at Moffat Open Space Parking area on Hells Bells Road and Parkhill Drive. Pavement path. Water and closed-toe shoes required. All walks are 1 to 2 miles with duration of 1 hour with usually negligible elevation gain, and frequently on paved or smooth paths. Carson City Republican Women features CC Manager and Sheriff at upcoming meeting. 11 a.m. Earlier RSVP required. Pleases join Carson City Republican Women at their upcoming Tuesday, Feb. 19 meeting to hear guest speakers Nancy Paulson, Carson City Manager and Sheriff Ken Furlong. Ms. Paulson will reflect on the current and future status of Carson City and Sheriff Furlong will provide an update on recent homicides. Social hour begins at 11:00 a.m. and the meeting is called to order at 11:30 a.m. in the Casino Fandango Ballroom. Carson City Republican Women strive to educate and enlighten women on current events, by providing updates on the Nevada Legislature as well as political issues in our country. Our members donate their time serving at the Carson City Senior Center and the Republican headquarters and their money and items needed to PAWS UP For Veterans, the Northern Nevada Dream Center, CASA and Advocates to End Domestic Violence.

Personal Trainer Certification offered through Western Nevada College. 4 p.m. In partnership with the World Instructor Training Schools, Western Nevada College’s Continuing Education department is offering a new 10-week personal trainer certification course, preparing students for their national certifying exams and combining lecture with practical experience. During the program, students will receive the knowledge and training to be a successful personal trainer with the industry’s only live, hands-on practical labs. After completing the 30-hour program and passing the National Commission for Certifying Agencies-accredited written and practical skills exams, students will be ready to work immediately in the personal training field. As a bonus, students will have the opportunity to receive an advanced certification at no additional cost. The level 2 Certified Personal Trainer program offers students the opportunity to complete an employer-assisted internship, which walks many graduates directly into great careers. Courses are scheduled once weekly in the late afternoons to accommodate working adults and are open to anyone in the Northern Nevada community. The class registration fee includes a test voucher for the certification exam, as well as lifetime employment assistance. Classes begin Feb. 19. Winter sport conditioning program continues into 2019 at Well Being. 5:30 p.m. Well Being Massage and Functional Fitness will continue to run its Winter Sport Conditioning Program for two more separate 3-week sessions. The winter season is rocking. Will you be? Lock in your best season of skiing, trekking, snow-boarding and snow mobiling ever and ensure yourself that when the snow calls you, your fitness level will not let you down. Training days and times include the following: Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 5:30 p.m. Saturday mornings at 9 a.m. Can’t make one of the scheduled classes? Simply want one more training day? Come to our Flex Friday Class on us! Fridays at 5:30 p.m. Cost for each 3 week session is $135. (buy both up front before Jan. 4 and only pay $255) The program is designed for men and women of all ages looking for a challenge, and an opportunity to improve strength and endurance for a great season on your skis, board, snow shoes, snow mobile, etc.
We use a circuit format of 10 to 15 exercise stations that will challenge the participants muscle endurance, core, and cardio fitness, and improve their dynamic agility and balance.
The coaches are experienced snow sport professionals and choose and design exercise sequences that transfer directly to the demands of the sport or activity on the snow. Besides the sport related benefits, participants may also experience improved resistance to flu and cold symptoms, reduced risk of injury, and improved stability and balance when exposed to icy or slippery environments. — Improvisational Acting for Youth Ages 9-14 at the Brewery Arts Center. 5:30 p.m. Have fun with Improv! We will use games, team-building exercises and basic improvisational acting structures. No experience necessary! Students will gain confidence on stage, employ public speaking skills, think quickly on their feet and create fun scenes out of thin air. — Tuesday Evening Hike - Linear Ditch Trail-West hosted by Muscle Powered. 5:30 p.m. Join our free leader-led hikes each week to enjoy Nevada outdoors! Meet in the parking lot at Governor's Field on Evalyn Street off of Roop Street. For the winter, these hikes are moving onto paved paths in town and will be 3-5 miles long and with duration of about 1-1/2 hours. BRING A FLASHLIGHT as it will be dark on these walks. Explore the Acrylic Pour: There’s Nothing Dirty About This Pour. 5:30 to 7 p.m. p.m. Enjoy the wonders of pouring as professional artist, Dana Childs aka d’Lauren, teaches you how to create modern-abstract fluid effects with acrylic pouring onto stretched canvas. In this class we will learn the dirty pour method. “Anyone can do this!” says Childs, who has been painting professionally for over two decades. Coloring Night at the Carson City Library. 6 to 7 p.m. Free event. Join us once a month to relax through coloring! We will provide coloring pages and materials, but feel free to bring your own. Empty Bowls Open Studio. 6 to 8:30 p.m. Create an empty bowl to donate to charity, instruction will be offered to create and paint a bowl or create something on our own during open studio session. "Home Means Nevada" photo exhibit debut at the Nevada Legislature. The Nevada Arts Council is unveiling a new traveling photo exhibition, “Home Means Nevada” that will start its journey in the hallways of the Nevada Legislature during the 2019 session. The exhibition features the works of 15 contemporary photographers, but which echoes famous photographs and artwork from the late 1800s and early 1900s that helped spur protections for many of our nation’s national parks. The exhibit highlights some of the unique treasures found on federally managed lands across the state, from bighorns to Burning Man, to the ancient rock art and petroglyphs in the Gold Butte area. The exhibition will be displayed in the Senate hallway of the Nevada Legislature, 401 S. Carson St. in Carson City.

UPDATE: Thank you, Carson City, for all your donations to the homeless drive! Your generosity has been amazing! Because of the overwhelming response, we have a lot of items that are not needed at this time, so I am planning a clothing/rummage sale in the near future with all the proceeds going to the Do Drop In Homeless Center to help keep their doors open. Now that the holiday season is over many people forget about the great need the homeless face everyday here in Carson City. With some of the coldest weather still ahead of us lets do what we can to help those suffering from homelessness. I'm collecting items for the Do Drop In Center and the homeless of Carson City. Some of the items needed are: Warm socks, Jackets, gloves, sleeping bags, blankets, hats, camping gear, tarps, and hygiene products. We are also collecting canned goods, nutritional snacks, hot chocolate, oatmeal, individual servings of juice as well as coffee, tea and soup that can be used at the center. Volunteers and money donations to keep the Do Drop In doors open are always needed. Items will be collected now through March. Nevada Artists Association Winter Show winners announced, Carson City reception on Feb. 23. Daily. The winners of the 2019 Nevada Artists Association Winter Show have been announced. The public is invited to visit the gallery at the Brewery Arts Center now through March 22 see all the submitted pieces. The public is also invited to attend the Winter Show artists reception and awards presentation on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2 to 4 p.m. at the NAA Gallery, 449 W. King Street. Beverages and light appetizers will be served.

Art exhibit 'Korea '76' featured at the Carson City Community Center's Sierra Room. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition "Korea ’76" with work by artists Eugene Rolfe and Gig Depio in the Community Center’s Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition is available to the public now through Feb. 28, 2019. Note: the Sierra Room is closed for renovation from Jan. 18 to Feb. 6.

Statewide presentations on radon safety. January is National Radon Action Month, and University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s Radon Education Program is offering free short-term radon test kits to Nevadans from Jan. 2 through Feb. 28. Radon test kits are available at Cooperative Extension offices and partnering locations, as well as at presentations, statewide. Radon is a naturally occurring, radioactive gas that is colorless, odorless and tasteless. It comes from the ground and can accumulate in homes, raising the risk of lung cancer. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates 21,000 Americans die each year from radon-caused lung cancer, killing more people than secondhand smoke, drunk driving and house fires.For more information, call the Radon Hotline at 1-888-RADON10 (1-888-723-6610) or visit the Nevada Radon Education Program website at www.RadonNV.com. Cooperative Extension, the EPA and the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health urge all Nevadans to test their homes for radon.
