AZZ Galvanizing to build eco-friendly plant in Storey County

AZZ Galvanizing Services, a global provider of steel protection, will build a new plant and fill dozens of jobs at the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center in Storey County, according to a joint announcement by the Northern Nevada Development Authority and the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada.

Nevada 2-1-1 reports successful call center switch

The Nevada 2-1-1 hotline switched to a new call center provider this summer and reports that the transition has been smooth. A new state contract began July 1 with Financial Guidance Center to operate the new 2-1-1 call center.

Hearing set for proposed Southwest Gas rate hike

There will be a Sept. 15 public hearing in Carson City on a proposed rate application by Southwest Gas for its customers. The utility proposes to increase the average Northern Nevada residential customer monthly bill an estimated $2.13 during summer and $7.63 in winter.

Carson City Kiwanis golf tournament, run and bench press to support cancer awareness

Robey Willis, founder of the Carson City Kiwanis Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day, urged participants to sign up early for this year’s golf tournament and other events.

“The golf tournament completely sold out last year,” he said. “It would be prudent for people to get in while they can.”

The second annual Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day will feature a 5K walk/run, bench press competition and golf tournament, on Sept. 19 at Empire Ranch Golf Course. Willis said last year’s event was a success.

“We had a wonderful time,” he said. “It was just a ball.”

Carson Nugget Casino Hosts Live Entertainment in Outdoor Venue Beginning Saturday

The Carson Nugget in Carson City is kicking off a series of free outdoor concerts at the historic Laxalt Plaza adjacent to the Carson Nugget Casino beginning Saturday, Sept. 5, Labor Day Weekend. The first band in the series will be Mo’z Motley Blues Band who entertained during Taste of Downtown. They have a strong local following due to their versatility and infectious stage performance.

The Nevada Recycles program has partnered with The Venetian and The Palazzo in Las Vegas, to support a statewide recycled art contest to increase Nevadans’ awareness and interest in recycling. Entrants must be Nevada residents and projects must be composed of used recyclable materials. Submission of an entry form and photos of artwork are due by October 25, 2015.

Carson City and Lyon County area medical field volunteers needed for two October events

Remote Area Medical and community partners are providing free medical services in October to Northern Nevadans regardless of age or insurance status. Events will be held in Carson City and Yerington in October and services include dental, vision and medical. Medical volunteers are needed with opportunities available for both medical and non-medical volunteers.

For something without wheels, consider the weekly pool tournament at Remedy’s on William Street.

Senator Square: Solutions program aims to help students with academic tutoring

Carson High School’s 21st Century Learning Center grant is expanding this year to include support labs open to all students. These labs, which run Tuesday-Thursday from 2-4 p.m., will include tutoring in English, math and science, as well as tutoring targeted to struggling freshmen and sophomores.

Hello fellow anglers, the weather has cooled down a little and the fishing has started to pick up around the area. Last weekend I took a trip early Saturday morning up to the East Carson River above Markleeville.
The mornings are cold, but warmed up about 7:30.

I fished a few long stretches of the river I have never fished before. I tip my hat to the Alpine County Fish and Game Commission. I just picked these spots at random because of the way they looked, Like something out of Field and Stream magazine.

I Love Carson City’s Weekend Event Summary: August 29-30

This last weekend of August is filled with ways to celebrate your community. Carson Animal Shelter Initiative, better known as CASI, hosts their annual Bark, Whine, and Dine Fundraiser at Fuji Park. Animal lovers can also head to Carson Catalina Apartments for a rummage sale that benefits the Carson Tahoe SPCA. The Carson City Sheriff's Office young Explorers will host a fundraising car wash; The Marine Corp League can be found at the north Carson Walmart; half of the donations received will go to Deputy Howell’s family fund. And don’t miss out on the drought-friendly water balloon ice bucket challenge raising funds for ALS at Butler Meats on Sunday.

Nevada Public Health: Consultants unnecessary when applying for medical marijuana card

Patients interested in applying for a medical marijuana card can do so by working directly with the Division of Public and Behavioral Health. It is as simple as getting a physician recommendation and filling out some forms at a total cost of just over $100. According to Patient Registry Program Officer Kari Ward, roughly half of patient applicants needlessly pay up to $500 to consulting firms for this service.
