NV Energy restores most power lost Saturday in Carson City and Douglas County
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sun, 06/28/2015 - 11:10amNV Energy was able to restore power to much of Carson City and Douglas County overnight, following severe thunderstorms around the region with strikes and surges affecting transformers and stations.
As of 11 this morning there was one outage affecting 8 customers in Carson City and four outages affecting 20 customers in Douglas County. Nearly 12,000 customers were affected Saturday.

Ceremony opens Carson City Motor Officer Training Challenge, downtown festival
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sat, 06/27/2015 - 9:42amMotorcycle patrol riders from Nevada and California were welcomed by dignitaries Saturday for the opening of the 12th Annual Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge in downtown Carson City.
The event brings dozens of law enforcement officers to Carson City annually to compete in team riding and obstacle courses along Carson Street. Saturday's events will include 2 man tethered riding, 4 man team relay, slow ride, an obstacle course and last man standing.

Battleborn Brews, Bikes, and Bubbly features the Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge, vendors, a brewfest, moustache competition and more. The Karson Kruzers are hosting their annual car show at Fuji Park, but will be making their way downtown after it’s over, so there will be plenty of cool cars to admire. Mojo Green takes the stage at 7 p.m. and you can head into the Carson Cigar Company to enjoy Reno’s newest Pink Floyd Tribute Band, Scarlett Moon at 9 p.m.

I know that the Taste of Downtown is hard to beat, but the new Battleborn Brews, Bikes, and Bubbly has thrown its hat in the ring. Live music, vendors, competitions that test motorcycle driving skill and moustache growing ability. The brewfest and tasting is tomorrow night, but the fun will begin today at noon. Shine up your hot rod, the Karson Kruzers’ Run Whatcha Brung Show hits Fuji Park tomorrow, but you can register and show off your ride tonight in the Carson Nugget Parking Lot.

National HIV Testing Day slated for Saturday

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, too many people are unaware they have human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). In the United States, nearly 1.2 million people are living with HIV, and almost one in seven (14 percent) do not know they are infected. In 2014 in Nevada, there were 420 new HIV diagnoses and more than 9,831 persons living with HIV/AIDS.

UPDATE: One dead in Sunday morning wrong way I-580 head-on crash in Washoe Valley
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 06/15/2015 - 1:38pmA passenger inside a SUV that was struck head-on by a car going the wrong way on I-580 through Washoe Valley died at the scene early Sunday morning, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol. Three other vehicles were involved in secondary crashes in which the victims sustained non-life threatening injuries.
The name of the person who died has not been released. The crash happened at 2:15 a.m. in the northbound lane just south of Bellevue Road in Washoe Valley, said NHP Trooper Dave Gibson.
Antioch woman identified in fatal Highway 50 motorcycle crash Saturday at Lake Tahoe

Amber R. Hallmark died in the crash that happened at around 8 p.m. in the area of Highway 50 and Martin Drive, said NHP Trooper Dave Gibson.

There will be Civil War Re-enactments, Cowboy Mounted Shooting, Nevada Gunslingers gun fight re-enactment, and over 40 food, clothing and craft vendors with live music on Saturday and Sunday.

She was born February 21, 1921, to German immigrant parents on their Carson City ranch. Evelyn married Jack Graham Bird Sr. in 1938. Together they raised cattle, turkeys, and bummer lambs on what is now known as the Silver Saddle Ranch. They also raised six children. Evelyn was a loving mother, homemaker and avid gardener.

The Board approved a plan of expenditure and imposed a 1/8-cent sales tax increase to finance the $4 million bond to construct a new animal services facility. The Board embraced CASI’s design of a new facility despite unanswered questions from the community. However, only now, is the design’s cost being questioned by the Board.
Foster parents needed in Nevada’s rural regions, training sessions offered in Carson City

“Training sessions help prepare interested foster/adoptive caregivers with the information they’ll need to become successful parents. The training addresses many of the unique challenges they may face, and helps them decide whether they’re ready to get started in becoming a licensed foster parent,” said Lori Nichols, licensed social worker and recruiter at Division of Child and Family Services.
