NV Energy Offers Free Solar Workshop for Residential Customers

NV Energy residential customers considering investing in rooftop solar are invited to attend an upcoming NV Energy “Solar for Homeowners” workshop Wednesday, Oct. 14 in Sparks.

Representatives of NV Energy’s SolarGenerations program will explain the fundamentals of solar electricity and share valuable consumer awareness tips and resources to help customers make an informed decision when choosing solar.

The purpose of these free workshops is to empower customers to be informed prior to making a solar investment. Workshop topics will include:

Calculating your home’s energy use.

Senator Square: CHS Blue Thunder Marching Band brings home first prizes

The Junior Achievement "Be Entrepreneurial" course will be taught at Carson High School this Fall in all CHS Business classes. Bill Heitman and Ila Acchtabowski from Junior Achievement have been instrumental in making this happen.The course will be taught by professionals from Sierra Financial Advisors Sally Kaplan and Katie Coombs.  Junior Achievement is a non-profit youth organization founded in 1919 by Horace A. Moses, Theodore Vail, and Winthrop M. Crane.

BLM firewood permits available at multiple locations

The Bureau of Land Management Carson City District is continuing to sell firewood cutting permits at multiple locations. Pinyon pine and Utah Juniper permits are $10 a cord. People may purchase up to ten cords before a commercial firewood cutting permit is required. Only dead trees — standing or down — may be cut.

Liz Penniman has shown in galleries in New York, London, San Francisco, Houston, and throughout Texas and California. Her artistic roots are influenced by the San Francisco Bay Area Figurative Movement, and her education at the Art Student's League of New York focused first on classical portraiture and later on abstract expressionism. She currently lives and works in the North Tahoe/Truckee area and participates in The Reno Art Salon and Critique Circle.

Comstock Foundation hosts October history lecture series

The Comstock Foundation for History and Culture is launching the Comstock History Lecture Series, which includes seven themed lectures that focus on Comstock History. The location of the lectures will rotate around the communities of the Comstock: Dayton, Silver City, Gold Hill and Virginia City. Tickets to attend the lectures vary between $5 and $10, and light refreshments will be provided for a donation.

Senator Square: Laptops for Everyone

All 2,300 Carson High School students will each receive a laptop during the week of Oct. 5-9 to be used at school and at home to enhance their learning opportunities. Beginning Monday at 7:45 a.m. and going throughout the day, all students will go to the library to receive their laptop. This process will be repeated again Tuesday through Thursday.

CARSON CITY, Nev. – The Nevada Department of Transportation is soliciting public feedback on Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility plans for Nevada roadways and transportation infrastructure.

NV Energy rates for electric customers to decrease by 4 percent

Beginning Thursday, NV Energy residential, commercial and industrial electric customers will see an overall rate decrease of 4 percent. This is the second consecutive quarter for electric rate decreases, according to the utility.

Dutch oven cooking demonstration, Sweet Sippin' Sunday in Genoa

Step back in time and sample authentic Dutch oven fare as you learn how early pioneers crossing the California Trail prepared their meals during a dutch oven demonstration Sunday at Mormon Station State Historic Park in Genoa.

Traversing the Great basin was a rough journey, with little timber and vegetation along the winding Humboldt River. Park Rangers will tell stories about the pioneer’s perilous travels across Nevada while teaching the basics of Dutch oven cooking.

Third 4.7-magnitude earthquake hits northwest Nevada - My News 4 - KRNV, Reno, NV

The U.S. Geological Survey reports that a 4.7-magnitude earthquake hit the northwest corner of Nevada on Saturday night — the third earthquake of this size to hit the region in the past 10 months.

Nevada 150 Foundation Historical Marker Legacy Project Finishes in Record Time

The Historical Marker Legacy Project, a part of Nevada’s year-long Sesquicentennial celebration of the State’s admission to the Union through more than 500 official, signature and legacy events, has been finished in record time thanks to the work of the Nevada 150 Commission, YESCO and other community partners.

New Disclosure Forms, Created by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Required on All Mortgages Starting in October

Beginning Oct. 3, most mortgage transactions will be required to be completed on new disclosure forms created by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The new forms – the Loan Estimate and Closing Disclosure – have been designed to improve consumer understanding of the mortgage process sooner, assist consumers with comparison shopping, and prevent unexpected issues at the time of closing.

The Friends of Brooks Foundation was founded by Allison and Owen Brolsma to honor their late son, Brooks Brolsma, and also in appreciation of friends, family, and local businesses who turned out in support during their time of need. Through a golf tournament in October of 2012, they were able to raise over $35,000 to support the family's travel needs, medical costs, and the costs of maintaining a household while having to live out of the area for over three months. Out of this generosity, a realization of the need for this type of financial support for our local families was born

CASA of Carson City Volunteer Training Begins Thursday

CASA of Carson City will hold the first class in a 10 week CASA volunteer training, Thursday, September 24, 6-9pm, at the CASA of Carson City office, 1539 E. 5th Street.

CASA volunteers are appointed by the Carson City Juvenile Court to serve as guardian ad litem for a case of abused or neglected children in a child welfare court case.

BLM extends public input period for Pine Nut Mountains wild horse herd plan

The Bureau of Land Management has extended its public comment period to Oct. 20 for input on its draft evaluation for wild horse herd management in the Pine Nut Mountains. The herd management plan area, prepared by the Sierra Front Field Office, is located south of Dayton and east of Carson City.
