Sophie Schler of Reno made history on November 12, 2020 when she became one of the nation’s first female Eagle Scouts – a prestigious achievement attained by some of the country’s most noteworthy figures. Miss Sophie Schler is among hundreds of young women who will make up the Inaugural Class of female Eagle Scouts.

A bill that restricts police use of chokeholds, allows recording of law enforcement and calls for drug testing of officers involved in shootings passed the Assembly with bipartisan support, in spite of criticism that lawmakers could have gone further to address police brutality.

The Assembly approved an omnibus budget bill a second time Sunday morning, this time with an amendment allocating tens of millions of dollars in federal coronavirus relief funding toward boosting alternative education strategies during the pandemic, winning over several Republican lawmakers who opposed the proposal 15 hours earlier.

Carson City, NV (May 4, 2020) - In a selfie video released yesterday, Chris Giunchigliani formally endorsed Patricia Ackerman for Nevada Congressional District 2. “Chris G.”, as she is known in Nevada Democratic circles, has been active in Nevada politics since she was elected to the Nevada Assembly in 1991. In 2006, Giunchigliani was elected to the Clark County Commission. She was also president at different points of the Clark County Education Association and Nevada State Education Association.

On Friday, March 13, Carson City resident Sena Loyd filed as a candidate for State Assembly District 40. Loyd, 36 and a registered Democrat, is an information professional currently working in the high-tech industry. Previously she served as the Library Director for the Carson City Library from 2014-2019.

Sherrie Paulie Scaffidi is running for the Nevada Assembly Seat in District 40. Sherrie is a US Navy Seabee, veteran. She is a widower who lost her wife of 42 years to cancer in 2012. Sherrie is the father of three grown children. She lived in Carson City from 1991 to 2005 and happily moved back in 2018.

Derek Morgan, a lifelong independent who is caucusing with the Democrats, declares candidacy for Nevada Assembly District 40. Morgan, pledges to never blindly side with either party and refuses to take corporate donations. His platform focuses on education, healthcare, childcare and using technology to increase two-way communication between voters and representatives.

Nevada Artists Association members have contributed to our community over the years. Perhaps the most entertaining story that has come from these moments in time is a snapshot of when one of their artists repaired a painting of Lincoln that had three bullet holes in it.

CARSON CITY – The Nevada Assembly Republican Caucus released the following statement Tuesday:
“Effective immediately, Assemblyman Jim Wheeler has resigned as Minority Floor Leader due to personal reasons. He nominated Dr. Robin Titus (R-AD 38) to be the new leader and she was unanimously elected by the full Caucus.”

More than 100 people joined NARAL Pro-Choice Nevada (National Abortion Rights Action League) in a rally Tuesday at the Nevada State Legislature to support Senate Bill 179, also called the “Trust Nevada Women Act.” In a time when abortion is being outlawed in several states around the country, Nevada instead went in the opposite direction with SB 179, securing a woman’s right to choose.

Flags around the capital city flew at half mast today following the death of Assemblyman Tyrone Thompson, Democratic Majority Whip, of Las Vegas.

Thompson was in care at Carson-Tahoe Medical Center when he passed away early Saturday morning.

He was 52 years old. At this time, no official cause of death has been reported.

The 80th session of the Nevada Legislature is underway with over 1,200 bills up for consideration. With so many bills it is nearly impossible to give each one the proper consideration required, as was intended by the founders of our great state. This means we are considering a great number of laws; however, what we should be focusing on is producing well thought out legislation.

Nevada Assemblyman Greg Smith, D-Sparks, was sworn in to office by Nevada Supreme Court Justice James Hardesty at the Legislative Building in Carson City on Wednesday.

Smith, 56, a retired union apprenticeship program administrator, was appointed to the vacant District 30 seat by Washoe County Commissioners after Assemblyman Mike Sprinkle resigned earlier this month following sexual harassment claims.

After Nevada became first U.S. state with a majority-female legislature, now it seems to be making another record of opening both legislative chambers for one entire week with Hindu mantras.

Sharing Nevada’s unique and exciting history with visitors from across Nevada and from around the world has been part of the commitment that the Friends of the Nevada State Museum made decades ago.

A new book by local historian Cindy Southerland showcases the Speakers of the Nevada Assembly from 1861 through 2014, the first 150 years of Nevada statehood. Each biography includes photographs and related emphemera to tell the stories of the 63 men and two women who have served as Speaker of the Assembly.

The Nevada Assembly on Monday recognized Lynn Hettrick, Nevada Department of Agriculture Plant Industry administrator and former Assembly member, as a new addition to its Wall of Distinction.

CARSON CITY — Governor Brian Sandoval announced Thursday that Nevada will receive a $5,663,328 grant to combat opioid addiction. The funding, which is the first of two rounds provided for the 21st Century Cures Act, will be provided through the State Targeted Response to the Opioid Crisis Grants administered by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
