Hello Carson City and welcome to Tuesday, March 12, 2019. Enjoy the sunny skies while you can as a quick-moving weather system will blow in this afternoon into the evening bringing a chance for gusty winds and scattered rain and light snow showers. From Wednesday onward it looks like plenty of sunshine filled days extending into the weekend.

The Mile High Jazz Band with vocalist Jakki Ford will be joined by several poets and readers on Tuesday, March 12 for an evening of big-band music and poetry on the theme "Hang Ups."

Each poem will be followed by a related big-band tune. The event will be at Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson Street, across the street from the state legislature building in Carson City. It runs from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Admission is $5 at the door and free for age 18 and under.

CARSON CITY — As the district works on aligning workforce preparedness efforts under the Work-Based Learning umbrella, community partners will have more opportunities to share information with students including career exploration, preparation and training.

RENO — Local and regional industries will come together as part of the University of Nevada, Reno’s inaugural cybersecurity conference from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., April 2 in the Joe Crowley Student Union. Participants will discuss ways to tackle the growing challenges in cybersecurity through building a collaborative and synergistic relationship between industries and academia.

No pretender, Jackson Browne returns to Tahoe on Aug. 10. An Evening with Jackson Browne will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harveys. Browne last appeared at Lake Tahoe on a stormy night in 2015.

The Carson City School Board will host its next meeting on March 12 at 7 p.m. in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street.

Topics to discuss will include the Superintendent’s Report, which will go over the NJROTC Orienteering Team and the report from the national competition. In addition, the Carson City High School Cheer Team and the recognition of third place winner at the USA Spirit Nationals Competition will be discussed.

CARSON CITY — Museums from around the state will converge on the Nevada State Museum in Carson City on Tuesday, March 19 for the 2019 Nevada Museum Showcase.

Uncovering Nevada’s past is the topic for the Carson City Leisure Hour Club on Wednesday, March 20. Presented by Dennis Casinelli, club members will learn about artifacts that he discovered while growing up in Nevada and during his long career as a highway engineer for the Nevada Department of Transportation. He also founded Cassinelli Landscaping and Construction, which still serves Northern Nevada today.

Supposedly, spring is less than two weeks away. As I sit here looking at the snow on the mountains and in the yard, I’m finding it hard to gear up my brain to think spring gardening thoughts. In some years, daffodils and forsythias would already be blooming. Instead, these cheery harbingers of spring have been delayed by lingering snow.

CARSON CITY — The Carson Nugget Casino Hotel celebrates its 65th anniversary with the grand opening of its new restaurant Angelina’s Bistro, a birthday cake and champagne toast, and the premiere of Casino Boss, episode 2 on Tuesday, March 12, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Carson Nugget, 507 N. Sergio Trejo Jr., a Las Vegas native and first-generation college graduate, visited several Carson City schools recently to share his inspiring story about his admittance to medical school. Trejo presented to more than 150 students.

Today has earned a happy dance, because there will be an extra hour of daylight with which to enjoy the outdoors. Just remember to set your alarms so you aren't an hour late for work Monday!

Carson City Native and Newcomers Club will be meeting on March 14, 2019 at 11:30 a.m. We will meet for lunch at Reds 395 Restaurant/grill, located at 1055 S. Carson Street in Carson City. We will have lunch and then have our meeting.

Our club supports our community in many ways such as schools, college scholarships, kids and horses therapy sessions and outreach to the blind by punching playing card in brail to send within the United States and abroad.

Beginning Saturday, March 9, a traveling exhibition titled "Explore Earth: Our Changing Planet" is on display at the Carson City Library through April.

Daylight Savings Time is about to begin, harkening the approach of Spring. Winter, though, continues its stubborn hold on the region, so bundle up this weekend in spite the extra hour of daylight. There's a chance of snow showers throughout the weekend with daytime highs only into the low 40s.

Also available are static displays of Vietnam era equipment, a Vietnam mobile museum and music from the era with US Navy Veteran and DJ, Mr. Shane Whitecloud.

Enjoy the wonders of pouring as professional artist Dana Childs (aka d’Lauren) teaches you how to create modern-abstract fluid effects with acrylic pouring onto stretched canvas. In this class, we will learn pouring techniques combined with artistic knife and brush work with color and design in mind.

“Anyone can do this!” says Childs, who has been painting professionally for over two decades and playing with Acrylic pouring is one of her new fascinations.
