The Carson City Chamber is hosting Nevada State Demographer Jeffrey Hardcastle at their monthly Soup’s On! luncheon scheduled Wednesday, Oct. 28 at the Gold Dust West beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Mr. Hardcastle will be presenting demographic statistics showing the ripple effect businesses currently in operation at the Tahoe Regional Industrial Center (TRIC) are now having on our economy.

The Comstock Foundation for History and Culture is launching the Comstock History Lecture Series, which includes seven themed lectures that focus on Comstock History. The location of the lectures will rotate around the communities of the Comstock: Dayton, Silver City, Gold Hill and Virginia City. Tickets to attend the lectures vary between $5 and $10, and light refreshments will be provided for a donation.

In its first entry into the Nevada Press Association‘s annual awards competition the Gold Hill-based Nevada Travel Network was awarded first place in two of the three categories it entered.

The blue ribbon for ‘Best Writing Online’ was awarded to the monthly NevadaGram and First Place in the ‘Best Feature Story Online’ category went to David Toll for “A visit to the Belmont Mill and Hamilton."

When we went over Carson Pass on Highway 88 at 3 p.m., the temperature was only 42 degrees. That is a definite change of seasons and also the time of year when some lakes open and others close for the year.

It seems like Mother Nature knows that a cloudy rainy day is perfect for celebrating National Homemade Cookies Day. If baking isn’t on your to-do list, check out Country Night at Living the Good Life, or learn to line dance at BeerCade. Spice up Thursday with Salsa dance at El Charro’s. Ladies will love the specials just for them at Tahoe Ridge Winery.

Carson Tahoe Health’s 14th annual Think Pink breast cancer awareness campaign kicks off this Thursday at Red’s Old 395 Grill from 5 to 7 p.m. in Carson City.

The event is free to attend and individuals wearing a Carson Tahoe Think Pink T-shirt (any year) will receive free appetizers courtesy of Red’s, which is hosting the event.

A section of State Route 342 south of Gold Hill will temporarily be closed beginning Tuesday through Nov. 12 for finishing construction of a Comstock Mining Inc. project to realign the road, according to the Nevada Department of Transportation.

The Dog Days of Summer have hit town, so grab your favorite four-legged friend and have fun. CASI is hosting the ‘pooch plunge’ at the Carson Aquatic Center so that your pooches can beat this late September heat. Join the Nevada Humane Society at Lake Tahoe Brewing Company for the first annual ‘Brew-paw.’ Adoptable pets, a raffle, and more await. Don’t miss out on the downtown walk Sunday following coffee and mimosas at Adele’s. The ‘wag-n-walk’ will end up at the Visitor’s Center where you will be rewarded with a special pet tag.

Hungry, Carson City? Grab some fruits or veggie at the Farmers Market in Carson Tahoe Hospital’s parking lot. Or grab lunch with the Chamber of Commerce; speaker John Ralston joins them this month. Grab a burger or hot dog at the Experimental Aircraft Association’s weekly luncheon and learn more about what this neat club does. Call the Gold Hill Hotel if you want to join them for dinner tonight; the weekly lecture series has resumed.

Carson Tahoe Sierra Surgery, the boutique elective surgery arm of Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center, has once again been recognized with the HealthInsight Hospital Quality Award for delivering top quality care and achieving high levels of patient satisfaction.

Each year in spring and fall, the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension horticulture program offers a series of classes called “Grow Your Own, Nevada.” Different topics are offered this week on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m.

The tradition of homecoming is once again here at Carson High School.
