Comstock Cemetery Foundation benefits from Virginia City's own Nevada-made gin spirit

For more than seven years Virginia City has been having fun with “Cemetery Gin” a Nevada-made spirit available at local saloons, bars and stores throughout Northern Nevada which celebrates a tall tale from the Comstock’s rich mining days of the 1850s.

Spearheaded by the Virginia City Tourism Commission, the gin is a product of Frey Ranch Estate Distillery, located in Fallon, Nev., where all the ingredients were grown, distilled and bottled.

Doug 'Mac the Naw' Busey's Lake Tahoe and Sierra fishing report

Hello fellow anglers, there's a lot going on in our local fishing world, despite the weather. With Topaz Lake opening up and the higher lakes having good ice on them this year.

I've had as many reports this last week as I would in the middle of May. Before we get to our reports, I would like to do a little education about ice conditions in our area. Our local weather temperatures have been extremely cold during the end of last year and into this year.

It’s a living history kind of day with presentations all around. Head up to the Gold Hill Hotel for their weekly lecture series, but don’t forget to make a reservation. The Historical Society of Douglas County discusses the facts and fiction behind Lucky Bill at the Cultural Center and Museum in Gardnerville. The Nevada Division of the Pony Express Association keeps history alive and you are welcome to attend their monthly meeting at Grandma Hattie’s tonight. Pay homage to your favorite singers of yesteryear with karaoke at Living the Good Life or Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar.

Sunday’s are excellent for relaxing. Join Dharma Zephyr for a day of meditation and reflection after the hustle of the holidays and start this new year grounded. The Gold Hill Hotel on the way to Virginia City has begun a monthly history event featuring dinner and a presentation. Dress in your best Comstock-era finery for a chance to win the costume contest.

Senator Square: Gearing up for the Carson High School talent show

The annual talent show is coming up at Carson High School. The event will take place 7 p.m. Feb. 10 at the Carson Community Center. Auditions for the talent show will be on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2:05 p.m. in the upstairs cafeteria at CHS. Audition applications can be picked up from room No. 243 or the office. The CHS talent show is only open to ninth through 12th graders at CHS and cash prizes are awarded. The CHS chapter of FBLA is hosting this event. It’s the first weekend of the year, and so it’s time for the downtown wine walk. The monthly tradition is a great way to meet others from around town. Nevada Division of Forestry revitalizes early miner Nevada tradition: Charcoal production

Early Nevada miners historically used charcoal as a fuel source to smelt less valuable ore to extract silver and gold. Located near mining districts throughout the state, charcoal ovens were utilized to optimize the charcoal conversion process.

VIRGINIA CITY — Storey County Sheriff Gerald Antinoro will offer a presentation on “Guns, Terror, and Radicalization in Rural Nevada” at the next Gold Hill Hotel’s Thursday Night Presentations at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 7, 2016.

Antinoro will talk about recent acts of terrorism, active shooters, mass protests and issues plaguing the larger cities of the country, and how a small, rural law enforcement agency might handle them.

Carson High School sports medicine program provides more than just education

Caroline Gabica slid activated hand warmers into her boots, picked up a bag of footballs and followed the coach out onto the field during the playoff game between Carson and Reed high schools in November. Soon Gabica, manager for the Carson High School Senators football team, was back on the sidelines, taping up the injured fingers of a player who got tangled up with another player’s face mask.

Suspects flee scene of crash at Highway 50 East and Lompa in Carson City

UPDATE 650PM: The driver allegedly involved in a hit and run crash, the first of three that happened within minutes of each along Highway 50 East just after 5 p.m. Thursday night has been taken into custody, said Carson City Sheriff's Office Sgt. Scott McDaniel.

UPDATE 5:53PM: Three separate vehicle crashes, each within minutes, have happened tonight beginning just after 5 p.m., along Highway 50 East, said Carson City Sheriff's Sgt. Scott McDaniel.
The crashes happened without snow or ice on the ground. There are crashes at: Highway 50 East and Airport Road, Highway 50 East and Nichols and Highway 50 East across from Dotty's Casino near the I-580 ramp.
