For more than seven years Virginia City has been having fun with “Cemetery Gin” a Nevada-made spirit available at local saloons, bars and stores throughout Northern Nevada which celebrates a tall tale from the Comstock’s rich mining days of the 1850s.

Spearheaded by the Virginia City Tourism Commission, the gin is a product of Frey Ranch Estate Distillery, located in Fallon, Nev., where all the ingredients were grown, distilled and bottled.

Lance Gilman, Storey County Commissioner and partner in the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center will present “History, Present and Future of the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center at the next Gold Hill Hotel’s Thursday Night Presentation at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 21, 2016.

January doesn’t have to be dreary. Just grab a coat and head out the door. Whether you want to rummage through antiques at Carson Mall, make crafts with the kids at the Children’s Museum, or enjoy some live music, you’ll find something to do on the list below.

Hello fellow anglers, there's a lot going on in our local fishing world, despite the weather. With Topaz Lake opening up and the higher lakes having good ice on them this year.

I've had as many reports this last week as I would in the middle of May. Before we get to our reports, I would like to do a little education about ice conditions in our area. Our local weather temperatures have been extremely cold during the end of last year and into this year.

It’s a living history kind of day with presentations all around. Head up to the Gold Hill Hotel for their weekly lecture series, but don’t forget to make a reservation. The Historical Society of Douglas County discusses the facts and fiction behind Lucky Bill at the Cultural Center and Museum in Gardnerville. The Nevada Division of the Pony Express Association keeps history alive and you are welcome to attend their monthly meeting at Grandma Hattie’s tonight. Pay homage to your favorite singers of yesteryear with karaoke at Living the Good Life or Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar.

VIRGINIA CITY — Tom Zachry, retired Dayton schoolteacher, cowboy singer and poet will share songs, poems and stories of old-time Dayton characters – including Rocky Adamson, at “Tom’s Fairly Western” Western, folk and original songs, stories about the good old days in Dayton and Virginia City” at the next Gold Hill Hotel’s Thursday Night Presentations at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 14, 2016.

Sunday’s are excellent for relaxing. Join Dharma Zephyr for a day of meditation and reflection after the hustle of the holidays and start this new year grounded. The Gold Hill Hotel on the way to Virginia City has begun a monthly history event featuring dinner and a presentation. Dress in your best Comstock-era finery for a chance to win the costume contest.

The annual talent show is coming up at Carson High School. The event will take place 7 p.m. Feb. 10 at the Carson Community Center. Auditions for the talent show will be on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2:05 p.m. in the upstairs cafeteria at CHS. Audition applications can be picked up from room No. 243 or the office. The CHS talent show is only open to ninth through 12th graders at CHS and cash prizes are awarded. The CHS chapter of FBLA is hosting this event. 'Real Life of College' Seminar

We all have a favorite time of year and mine is Girl Scout Cookie Season. Pre-sales begin today, so track down your favorite scout and order some Thin Mints. Some freshly fallen snow will greet you once you head outside, so please use caution when out and about this morning. The roads are likely slick. Enjoy some indoor entertainment with your little ones at Carson City Library’s weekly story time. Afterwards, head across the street to Browser’s Corner Book Store to take advantage of their half-off sale. Good luck to all the kids trying out for Wild Horse Children’s Theaters next performance. It’s the first weekend of the year, and so it’s time for the downtown wine walk. The monthly tradition is a great way to meet others from around town. Kids will want to head to the Community Center for the Elks Lodge Hoop Shoot. The best shooters in the state will advance to the national competition in Chicago for a chance at scholarship money.

Happy 2016, Carson City. A new year has been rung in and I hope you aren’t too hung over. Get a jump on any healthy new year’s resolutions with the annual First Day Hike. You can choose between Morgan Mill on the far east side of Carson City, the dunes of Washoe Lake State Park, or some history with a short hike to the Rock Point Mill in Dayton. Bundle up, though, it's cold out there. Let the party continue with DJ Bobby G at Living the Good Life or DJ Cillo at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar.

We’ve made it, Carson City! Today is the last day of 2015, so get your resolutions handy. Early Nevada miners historically used charcoal as a fuel source to smelt less valuable ore to extract silver and gold. Located near mining districts throughout the state, charcoal ovens were utilized to optimize the charcoal conversion process.

VIRGINIA CITY — Storey County Sheriff Gerald Antinoro will offer a presentation on “Guns, Terror, and Radicalization in Rural Nevada” at the next Gold Hill Hotel’s Thursday Night Presentations at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 7, 2016.

Antinoro will talk about recent acts of terrorism, active shooters, mass protests and issues plaguing the larger cities of the country, and how a small, rural law enforcement agency might handle them.

Celebrate New Year’s Day 2016 with Nevada State Parks. Guided hikes led by park rangers and local volunteers will be offered at State Parks throughout Nevada as part of the nationwide First Day Hikes Program. Nevada State Parks is waiving entrance fees for all first day hikers.

I’m dreaming of a white Christmas, and it’s not a bad bet this week. Enjoy the sunshine while we’ve got it. Enjoy an evening of trivia at Living the Good Life. Ready to break a world record, Carson City? High school senior, Taylor Weddell is organizing an attempt at the World’s Largest Human Christmas Tree for her senior project. Caroline Gabica slid activated hand warmers into her boots, picked up a bag of footballs and followed the coach out onto the field during the playoff game between Carson and Reed high schools in November. Soon Gabica, manager for the Carson High School Senators football team, was back on the sidelines, taping up the injured fingers of a player who got tangled up with another player’s face mask.

The weekend is just around the corner, but Thursday offers some fun with or without the kids. Join Santa for story time at the Carson City Library. The clock is ticking for last minute shoppers. Luckily, Carson City has great options for everyone on the list. Telegraph Square in downtown will be hopping with a Santa parade, vendors, and a pirate ship, in addition to great shops. The Brewery Arts Center is hosting a weekend-long art sale with one of a kind options throughout the campus. Art is a great gift, and making it is even more fun. Carson City Pottery is holding an open house today; a gift certificate for a pottery class is perfect for all skill levels.

UPDATE 650PM: The driver allegedly involved in a hit and run crash, the first of three that happened within minutes of each along Highway 50 East just after 5 p.m. Thursday night has been taken into custody, said Carson City Sheriff's Office Sgt. Scott McDaniel.

UPDATE 5:53PM: Three separate vehicle crashes, each within minutes, have happened tonight beginning just after 5 p.m., along Highway 50 East, said Carson City Sheriff's Sgt. Scott McDaniel.
The crashes happened without snow or ice on the ground. There are crashes at: Highway 50 East and Airport Road, Highway 50 East and Nichols and Highway 50 East across from Dotty's Casino near the I-580 ramp.
