Senator Square: Gearing up for the Carson High School talent show
The annual talent show is coming up at Carson High School. The event will take place 7 p.m. Feb. 10 at the Carson Community Center. Auditions for the talent show will be on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2:05 p.m. in the upstairs cafeteria at CHS. Audition applications can be picked up from room No. 243 or the office. The CHS talent show is only open to ninth through 12th graders at CHS and cash prizes are awarded. The CHS chapter of FBLA is hosting this event. For more information, contact Mrs. Golik at 283-1737.
'Real Life of College' Seminar
Seminar to be held on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 6 p.m. in the CHS library. College-bound Juniors and Seniors, along with their parents, are invited to attend this informative event. Living on or off campus, meal plans, roommate problems, where to buy books, and whether or not to join a sorority or fraternity are just some of the topics that will be covered. The event is casual, informative, and fun — a night to meet with and learn from CHS grads who are currently in college and can tell you what you really want to know. National Honor Society members can earn a point for attending.
Library Requests
The CHS Library is creating a maker-space for students to socialize, be creative, and challenge themselves. Items wanted: Legos, Rubik's Cubes/handheld puzzles, chess games, etc. If you have items gathering dust, please consider donating to your school library. Contact Mrs. Campbell at CHS 283-1641 or acampbell@carson.k12.nv.us
Carson High School FFA
The Capitol FFA Chapter would like to invite you to participate as a sponsor in the “Beauty in a Basket” program. The purpose of this program is to enhance the beauty of downtown Carson City by placing hanging flower baskets throughout the downtown corridor.
This year, as in years past, the Capitol FFA chapter has taken on the responsibility of assisting The Greenhouse Project in securing “Beauty in a Basket for Carson City” sponsorships. The Flowers for our hanging baskets are planted, grown, and marketed by Carson High’s Agricultural Science Program, Capitol FFA, and our students with special needs. The hanging baskets have always been a source of pride for the community and this year will be no exception. If you are interested in sponsoring a flower basket, please call 283-1637.
CHS VoTech Thanks
Carson High School Vocational Training Program wants to send a big thank you to our three new businesses that are now a part of our program; Yogurt Beach, St. Paul's Lutheran Church, and La Posada Real. They are giving the Vocational students an opportunity to come into their business and learn job skills with "hands on " experience. Also a big thank you to the businesses that have continued to support us for many years. These businesses are Ormsby Post Acute Rehab, DMV, FISH Dining Room, Lone Mountain Veterinary Hospital, Gold Dust West Bowling Center, Grocery Outlet, and Carson City Library.
Craft Fair Success
The 2015 Carson High Holiday Craft Fair was a huge success thanks to the many student, faculty, and adult volunteers! The show brought in $16,100 - the best ever with 1426 pounds of food collected for FISH. The proceeds from the craft fair in the amount of $11,396.25 were awarded to 34 clubs and organizations at Carson High - another $4,000 will be awarded in the spring with eight $500 senior scholarships. A special thanks to FISH, SignPro, Starbucks, Grandma Hattie's and Monarch Printing for their assistance this year. We already have more than 85 vendors reserving their spaces in the 2016 craft fair which will be held on Nov 18 and 19, 2016. If you are interested in being a vendor, contact Cathy Barbie at (775)882-8109 or email her at crbbarb@gmail.com to receive an application.
Student of the Week
This week’s student of the week is Oscar Lara. Oscar is always on top of his work and is contentious about doing his absolute best in his classes. He is always willing to help and always has a smile on his face. Thanks Oscar for all your hard work at Carson High!
Senior Spotlight
This week, the senior spotlight is on Jonathan “Ojo” Ventura. He consistently pushes himself by taking a rigorous course load filled with honors and AP courses as well as courses in pharmacy practice and orchestra. Along with being an outstanding student, Ojo is a talented musician and athlete and committed member of the Carson High School community.
Ojo is involved in many activities and clubs and has become a strong leader. He is currently the 2nd Vice President for Nevada’s Health Occupations Student Associate, a Link Crew director, Judicial Board officer, Interact Club Vice President, and Key Club Spirit Coordinator. He is also a member of the boys’ varsity tennis and swim teams, as well as several other clubs and plays violin for the Carson High School Orchestra. With all of these activities and commitment to his education, Ojo still finds time to volunteer time with the Regent Care Center, Salvation Army, and St. Theresa’s Catholic Church.
Ojo plans to attend a prestigious university where he will major in pre-medicine. He plans to pursue his dream of becoming a doctor. Carson High School is proud of you, Ojo, and wishes you the best of luck in your future endeavors!
