Fremont Elementary evacuated after report of gas leak; parents can pick up their children

UPDATE 1:24PM: Carson City Fire Chief Stacey Giomi said the leak which forced an evacuation at Fremont Elementary earlier today may be anti-freeze that was released in the boiler room heating and ventilation system.

Firefighters went through with sensors to determine if there was anything hazardous and there wasn't, Giomi said. At first it was thought to be a water softening agent, he said, but it turned out the agent was well within its containers.

"Because it was an early release day anyway, it worked out where the children were released on time, and teachers are able to go back into the school to get their things," he said. "School maintenance is looking into the boiler room and we expect there will be school tomorrow."

UPDATE: Parents are allowed to pick up their children this afternoon, which was already scheduled to be a half day at Fremont Elementary. The school was evacuated at around 12:30 p.m. due to fumes, believed to be from the boiler room that were originally reported to be a water softening chemical agent.

Where is the memorial to the pilot and firefighters who died on July 5, 1976?

Event Date:
October 25, 2014 (All day)

On July 5, 1976, helicopter pilot James Davidson, and firefighters, Ken Carvin and John Ivins were killed in a crash that also seriously wounded two others while fighting a human caused fire west of Carson City in the Kings Canyon area.

Last week while hiking in the area we noticed that it has been removed. Why? Is it due to vandalism or has it been removed to make way for a trail or is it being refurbished?

This memorial is a significant monument to a sad event in Carson City's history and should be treated with the respect it deserves and consideration for those left behind.
