Reno man jailed on felony charge after road rage incident involving gun
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Wed, 12/03/2014 - 12:06pmA 45-year-old Reno man was arrested Tuesday after allegedly brandishing a firearm and aiming at a person during a road rage incident in the area of South Carson and Stewart streets, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
Randy Lee Baker was booked on a felony charge, suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and a gross misdemeanor charge of aiming a firearm at a person. Bail was set at $7,500.
Bob Roper to lead Nevada Division of Forestry beginning in February
Submitted by editor on Tue, 12/02/2014 - 1:37pmFirefighter turned administrator Bob Roper has been named Nevada's new Division of Forestry leader, the director of the state's Department of Conservation and Natural Resources announced Tuesday. He starts the job Feb. 2, 2015.
Roper, now the chairman of the International Association of Fire Chief’s Wildland Fire Policy Committee, was Fire Chief for Ventura County, Calif., for 15 years prior to his retirement in 2012. He worked his way up through the county organization beginning in 1980 as a firefighter.
LTCC proposes 4-year public safety degree in state pilot program
Submitted by editor on Tue, 12/02/2014 - 10:21amLake Tahoe Community College has submitted a proposal to the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office to be considered for a four-year degree pilot program, allowing up to 15 community colleges the opportunity to offer one 4-year degree each for starters. After considering multiple options, LTCC's Baccalaureate Degree Steering Committee ultimately chose to propose offering a Public Safety Administration degree.

With 60 years now under its belt, the downtown capital city casino again outdid itself with community service, treating nearly 1,000 residents to a free Thanksgiving meal.
Teaming up with Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH, guests were stuffed with turkey and all the trimmings, dished up by dozens of volunteers.

Several prescribed fire operations begin Sunday around the Lake Tahoe Basin

Prescribed burns are planned near Incline Village, Tahoma, Meeks Bay, Sugar Pine Point State Park, Tahoe Mountain and Heavenly urban lot areas. A winter storm system is expected to arrive around the time the burning operations begin.

Woman dies in South Lake Tahoe car crash, two taken by air ambulance to Reno hospital

Two were flown by air ambulance to Renown Medical Center in Reno. Their conditions are unknown at this time. The deceased woman is from South Lake Tahoe, a police officer said.
Burned bear cub ready for winter hibernation after being nursed back to health at Lake Tahoe

But thanks to the efforts of wildlife rehabilitation caregivers at Lake Tahoe, the bear has since made a sweeping recovery and will return to the wild this spring.
Carson City sheriff’s arrest log: Suspects jailed on assault, stalking and warrant charges
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sun, 11/23/2014 - 11:20amA 41-year-old Carson City man was arrested Friday on felony charges, battery with a deadly weapon and possession of marijuana with intent to sell, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
Christoper Matthew Couch is being held on $35,000 bail. According to the arrest report, officers were called to the 3800 block of South Carson Street regarding two people arguing. Dispatch advised they were getting several 911 calls and one of the reporting witnesses said one of the men hit the other.

Care Flight called to vehicle rollover at Emerson and Ruby
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Fri, 11/21/2014 - 11:06amCare Flight was called and Carson City fire and rescue responded late this morning to Emerson and Ruby streets for a rollover accident reported shortly after 11 a.m.
Two vehicles were involved, with one person experiencing a neck injury, according to dispatch. One person was taken by Care Flight to Renown Medical Center in Reno and one other person was taken by ambulance to the hospital.
Traffic was diverted at Sutro and Emerson. Care Flight landed east of Ruby Lane, according to dispatch.
Agencies continue prescribed fire operations around Lake Tahoe

Several calls to Carson City dispatch have been made regarding a controlled burn happening today, Tuesday, around Riverview Park. The burn was planned and is between 5 and 10 acres, according to Carson City dispatch. It is emitting a lot of smoke in the area.

Carson City public safety agencies stage shooting scenario exercise
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sat, 11/15/2014 - 12:23pmThe first of two “active assailant response” exercises was staged Saturday at the Carson City Courthouse. The scenario involved two shooters in camouflage who walked through the three story courthouse, shooting city employees and members of the public in their path as they went courtroom to courtroom.
The shooters were taken out with gunfire by Department of Alternative Sentencing officers and Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies within two minutes of the scenario, but not after leaving a bloody path of fatally and critically injured victims.

Carson City public safety teams to hold two 'active assailant response' training exercises

The exercises will be conducted by the Carson City Fire Department, Carson City Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Alternative Sentencing. They will be held at the Carson City Courthouse on Musser Street.
Carson City firefighters called to brush fire near Morgan Mill and Brick Road

No structures were burned and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Carson City firefighters were called late tonight to a brush fire in the area of Brick Road and Morgan Mill Road. First responding Carson City deputies report flames of about 10 feet by 20 feet in size. The call came in shortly after 11:20 p.m.
One dead, one flown by Care Flight in grave condition after motorcycle crash with pedestrian in Carson City
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 11/11/2014 - 5:30pmUPDATE: One person is dead from injuries in a crash Tuesday night involving a motorcycle and pedestrian at Stewart and Telegraph streets, Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong confirmed. The pedestrian, an older adult male, was pronounced dead at the scene. The motorcyclist, also a male adult, was taken by Care Flight to Renown Medical Center in Reno where they are suffering serious, grave injuries, Furlong said. The crash was reported at 5:27 p.m.
Sgt. Earl Mays said it appears the pedestrian was in the crosswalk when he was struck by the motorcyclist. The Nevada Highway Patrol is also at the scene investigating.

UPDATE: One person was flown by Care Flight and another having suffered serious injuries following a crash Tuesday night involving a motorcycle and a pedestrian at Stewart and Telegraph streets. CPR was being administered to one of the victims, while another was taken by ambulance to a landing zone near the DMV where a Care Flight helicopter has taken them to Renown Medical Center in Reno.

There were 80 Nevadans from 10 counties in attendance representing many stakeholders in Nevada’s wildland-urban interface fire issue, including members of wildfire-prone communities; local fire service representatives; local, state and federal agencies; and landscape partners.
Structure fire in Dayton

NDOW Seeks Seed Gathering Volunteers
Submitted by editor on Wed, 11/05/2014 - 1:28pmThe Nevada Department of Wildlife will hold its annual volunteer sagebrush seed collection on Saturday, Nov. 22 starting at 9 a.m. Even though 2014 was not a big fire year, Northern Nevada has lost millions of acres of wildlife habitat to wildfires in the last few years and seed is still needed for ongoing range rehabilitation efforts.
“When demand is high for seed, the price for a pound of pure live sagebrush seed can be over $50,” said Steve Foree, NDOW habitat biologist. According to Foree, NDOW either has to buy seed or pick it themselves.
Carson City Sheriff: Nevada Day weekend sees uptick in alcohol and drug related arrests

While the parade itself was calm for the most part, there was a significant uptick in alcohol and drug related arrests after the parade ended and when afternoon turned to evening.
Carson City firefighters knock down August Drive house fire; respond to several calls since noon

Firefighters responded late Sunday morning to a house fire in the 4000 block of August Drive. The fire started in the kitchen and may have went into the attic, said Carson City Fire Chief Stacey Giomi. No one was home at the time and a fire investigator has been called to the scene.
Vehicle accident involving child at Sonoma at Silver Sage
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Fri, 10/31/2014 - 6:08pmUPDATE: A young girl suffered minor injuries tonight after she was struck by a vehicle while trick or treating, according to a Carson City sheriff's sergeant.
The girl was apparently crossing a street and wasn't in a crosswalk when she was struck by a vehicle that was driving slowly and may have had its brights on, said Sgt. Scott McDaniel.
The girl is OK, suffering minor cuts and bruises to her knees and arms. The accident, McDaniel notes, was low impact at low speed.
