Fremont Elementary evacuated after report of gas leak; parents can pick up their children
UPDATE 1:24PM: Carson City Fire Chief Stacey Giomi said the leak which forced an evacuation at Fremont Elementary earlier today may be anti-freeze that was released in the boiler room heating and ventilation system.
Firefighters went through with sensors to determine if there was anything hazardous and there wasn't, Giomi said. At first it was thought to be a water softening agent, he said, but it turned out the agent was well within its containers.
"Because it was an early release day anyway, it worked out where the children were released on time, and teachers are able to go back into the school to get their things," he said. "School maintenance is looking into the boiler room and we expect there will be school tomorrow."

The school was evacuated at around 12:30 p.m. due to fumes, believed to be from the boiler room that were originally reported to be a water softening chemical agent.

UPDATE: A water softening agent that escaped from containers is believed to be the cause of a strong odor that forced the evacuation of Fremont Elementary, according to firefighters on scene.
It is unknown how the agent escaped from its containers. Firefighters remain on scene and are calling it a working incident. School children remain evacuated.
