Easter egg hunts, bounce houses, fun and games abound: I’ve made family friendly events easy to find by putting them in bold in the list. It’s a good weekend to be an adult, as well, with the Downtown Business Association wine walk and a few adults-only egg hunts.
Forest Service: Wildfire in Desolation Wilderness started by illegal campfire
Submitted by editor on Thu, 04/02/2015 - 12:18pmAn illegal campfire touched off a wildfire Tuesday in the Desolation Wilderness at Granite Lake. Firefighters responded quickly, despite high winds, and were able to keep the fire from spreading, according to a U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman.

Heavenly ski resort at Tahoe shifts to spring operations, Sierra launches lift ticket deal
Submitted by editor on Sun, 03/29/2015 - 4:44pmBeginning on Monday, March 30, Heavenly Mountain Resort at south shore Lake Tahoe will offer mountain access via the Heavenly Gondola in the Heavenly Village for the remainder of the season and Stagecoach Express through Sunday, April 5.
All mountain operations on the California side will close March 30, a week ahead of schedule. The resort will operate 11 lifts, accessing 27 trails. Mountain Operations staff continue to closely monitor and assess conditions daily. At this time the resort is still planning on closing on April 19.

Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sun, 03/29/2015 - 11:13amUPDATE 1:32PM: From Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong: At 12:09 p.m., the Carson City Sheriff’s Office and Fire/Paramedics responded to the corner of Dori Way and Ester Circle to a reported juvenile pedestrian hit by a vehicle. Once on scene, officers determined that the juvenile was an 11-year-old Hispanic male and the driver of the vehicle, a Chevrolet Tahoe, had left the scene.

UPDATE: Carson City fire and rescue canceled Care Flight and is taking the driver of the truck that flipped by ambulance to Renown Medical Center in Reno.
The driver apparently went through the Fifth Street travel lane at the roundabout, possibly going too fast, flipping the truck to its side and dumping a load of dirt, garbage and other debris along the roadway.

Fire unfounded at Save Mart on Highway 50 East
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Thu, 03/26/2015 - 2:27pmCarson City fire crews could not locate a fire after being dispatched just after 2:50 p.m. Thursday afternoon to Save Mart on Highway 50 East. A store employee who answered the phone said they were checking it out and had evacuated the store. Crews on scene told Carson City Sheriff's Office Undersheriff Steve Albertsen that there had been an odor of paper burning near the deli area, but they couldn't located the fire. The store was closed temporarily as firefighters searched for the origin. It has now been reopened.

Carson City fire and ambulance called to Russell and Long for motorcycle crash

The accident was reported around 12:30 p.m. Arriving deputies said the rider, a male, was conscious with neck, back and hip pain, according to dispatch.
Traffic is was being diverted around the south side of Long and Russell.

State History Day results: The Northern Nevada National History Day contest was held on March 14 at the University of Nevada, Reno and Carson High School sophomores produced fantastic results. All first place entries qualify to move on to the national contest.
Wings of Freedom Tour returns in June with vintage WWII planes to Minden-Tahoe Airport

Jim Rackley wins 2014 Wayne E. Kirch Conservation Award

Rackley’s commitment to Nevada’s wildlife resources was recognized during the March 20, 2015 Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioner’s meeting in Reno, Nevada, where he received the award.
Rackley was nominated for the award by Nevada Muleys a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring the conservation of mule deer and their habitats in Nevada. According to the nomination, in 2014 Rackley had a “very impressive record of time and commitment to Nevada’s wildlife.”
Storey County Fire Protection District saves more than $60K with new ambulance chassis

The savings are a direct result of recycling an old ambulance box and placing it on a new chassis.

Injury accident in the northbound lane of Carson City freeway near College Parkway ramp
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 03/16/2015 - 7:25pmUPDATE: Carson City fire and rescue responded to a single vehicle traffic accident with injuries Monday night in the northbound lane of I-580 near the College Parkway ramp. Care Flight was also called.
The accident was reported to NHP at 8:14 p.m. The vehicle had airbag deployment. Traffic was re-directed around the accident scene.
Carson City firefighters stop brushfire in field at Stewart Indian School
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 03/16/2015 - 1:47pmUPDATE: Traffic was allowed to proceed off of Center Street near the Stewart Indian School, the site of a brush fire adjacent to the old football field. Firefighters have doused the flames and begun mop up operation. The fire burned approximately 2 acres, said Carson City Fire Chief Bob Schreihans.
"We are trying to determine the cause of it," he said.
While structures were threatened at one point, firefighters were able to halt the spread. No structures were damaged. The location straddles Carson City and state property. The State Fire Marshal has arrived and is also investigating.

Carson City Fire Department called to structure fire on Pheasant Drive
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sat, 03/14/2015 - 10:09amUPDATE: Firefighters have got a handle on a structure fire in an apartment in the 3900 block of Pheasant Drive. The fire is believed to have started near the area of a water heater. Carson City firefighters were able to knock down the flames coming from the home.
Nearby residences were evacuated. The cause of the fire has not been determined. An ambulance was called to assist at least one person who was evacuated.
Care Flight to respond to motorcycle crash involving car at Fairview and Sweetwater
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sat, 03/14/2015 - 7:52amCare Flight was called and Carson City fire and ambulance responded this morning to a motorcycle accident at the intersection of Fairview and Sweetwater.
The crash was reported at around 8:45 a.m. Initial reports are the motorcyclist had serious injuries, was conscious but with labored breathing and that he could not feel his legs.
The Carson City Sheriff's Office responded to redirect traffic around the accident and to investigate.

Open burning in Carson City begins March 14 with permit
Submitted by editor on Mon, 03/09/2015 - 3:52pmThe Carson City Fire Department will allow open burning March 14 to April 12. The purpose of the open burn period is to provide residents an opportunity to dispose of accumulated weeds and yard debris.
In order to make this a safe endeavor for those involved, the Carson City Fire Department will require a burn permit with a valid permit number before burning will be allowed. Permits must be obtained no less than 24 hours prior to conducting an open burn.
