A Walk Down the Fall Art Walk Lane

At 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning a group of well bundled people met in downtown Carson City for the Fall Art Walk. If you missed the walk or forgot to take notes, here is a brief recap.

1) Comma Coffee – The “Backseat Gallery” in the back was featuring art by Barry Mitchell. It was a great opportunity to get a hot coffee too.

2) Legislative Grounds – A viewing of the statues of Kit Carson and Abraham Curry and the Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial along the beautiful ground of the Nevada State Legislature.

Erik Holland is painting in Carson City for his November show

Reno plein air painter Erik Holland will be out in all weather over the next two weeks painting some of the iconic features of Carson City for an upcoming reception, show and sale. The event is called "Art in the Afternoon" and will take place at the Jones Mansion in Gold Hill on November 9 and 10.

Lake Tahoe ski resorts rejoice with first significant snow of the season

The season's first significant snowfall covered the Sierra Monday with nearly a foot of powder at Lake Tahoe area resorts and 3-5 inches at lake level.

Anticipation for additional snowfall along with summer investments pays winter dividends at Tahoe South this season. Women to Women Nevada with Sue Jesch

Sue Jesch is the Education Director of the Carson City Symphony and an amazing private violin and viola instructor. She has taught violin and viola and performed professionally for more than 30 years. She began playing in the Carson City Symphony when she moved to Nevada in 2004.

She became founding director of the Symphony’s successful Strings in the Schools and Strings in the Summer programs in 2005. She is recipient of the 2011 Nevada Governor’s Arts Award for Leadership in Arts Education.

Buffalo Wild Wings prepares for Nov. 18 Carson City opening with zesty offer to first 100 in the door

Champion hot wings served up tangy Buffalo style will find a home in Carson City beginning next month when the Buffalo Wild Wings franchise opens its doors on South Carson Street.

To be sure there's a packed grand opening at the sports bar and restaurant being built at 3815 South Carson Street, the owners are offering quite an incentive: Free wings for a year for the first 100 people who walk in the door at 11 a.m. Nov. 18.

Nevada Day Parade gets its own feature song and video

One of the great things to come out of this year's Nevada Day pre-festivities is this song and video. Lake Tahoe woman hits $1.4 million slot jackpot at MontBleu

A South Shore Lake Tahoe woman won $1.4 million at MontBleu Resort Casino and Spa Wednesday, the largest single win in the property’s seven year history.

The lucky Tahoe local, in her 30s who wished to remain anonymous, hit the big payload on the IGT Wheel of Fortune® progressive slot for a total of $1,407,656.68 Wednesday evening in the High Limit Room. The winner played $100 before hitting the jackpot.

“Dreams do come true,” said Brett Hunn, director of marketing at MontBleu Resort Casino and Spa. “This is MontBleu biggest slot hit and I’m betting there’s more to come.”

Women to Women Nevada with Bonners Fairy book series author Liz Patterson

Children's book writer Elizabeth "Liz" Ann Patterson is this week's guest on Women to Women Nevada.

Patterson, a Carson City Support Services Specialist, has penned a series of six children's fantasy and adventure books "Bonners Fairy." Outdoors with Don Q: A short but interesting visit to Elko

Elaine and I recently returned from an interesting, three-day, two-night visit to Elko, way over in Northeastern Nevada. We are both members of the Board of Directors of the Nevada Operation Game Thief (OGT) Citizens Board.

That OGT Citizens Board has been in existence since 1987, and it is the small, private group that pays rewards for information that leads to the conviction of poachers of Nevada's wildlife.

The resort poll ranks mountains based on mountain features such as parks and halfpipe, terrain, and other areas including vibe, snowfall, lodging, value, and food. Each year TransWorld readers are polled to rank their three favorite resorts based on their overall experience.

Area artists work on display at the Carson City Business Resource Innovation Center

The Capital City Arts Initiative opened its exhibition, BRIC Art 4, with artwork by eight area artists at the Carson City Business Resource Innovation Center on Wednesday. The exhibition will remain at the BRIC through early September 2014.

The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, BRIC Art 4, with artwork by eight area artists at the City’s Business Resource Innovation Center [BRIC]. Western Nevada College softball program fundraiser Nov. 3 features 5K run/walk

Enjoy autumn’s change of season and get fit for the holidays with a 5K run and walk on Sunday, Nov. 3, at 3 p.m., in Carson City.

Northern Nevada Railway Last Star Train Sept. 28, October Ghost Trains in the works

Enjoy a wondrous evening under the stars with our friends from Great Basin National Park as they host the Star Train at Nevada Northern Railway, Saturday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m.

There will be a trivia contest on board with prizes for those with their thinking caps on. Passengers will be let off the train in order to gaze through telescopes at the night sky, guided by the Dark Rangers of Great Basin National Park. This is a great train ride that the whole family can enjoy.

Senior Mingle to collect shoes for Carson City students

The Lodge Assisted Living Community will host its monthly Senior Mingle on Thursday, September 26 from 2 – 4pm. All local seniors are invited to attend the Mingle which features entertainment, refreshments and fun raffle prizes.

This month, guests are asked to bring a new pair of athletic shoes to donate as part of the Lodge’s annual SOLEmates Shoe Drive. The shoes will be donated to the Carson City School District’s McKinney/Vento Children in Transition program.

Great and not so great escapes from Nevada State Prison featured at Oct. 16 talk

One escape from Nevada State Prison fits the category of “great.” Most of the others, not so much. Glen Whorton, former director of the Nevada Department of Corrections, will speak at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Silver Oak Executive Conference Center in Carson City on “Great and not so great escapes from Nevada State Prison.”

His talk is free and open to the public. It is the first in a monthly series of presentations by the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society on the history of the 151-year-old prison.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong announces fourth term run

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong will run for a fourth term as the capital city's top law enforcement officer, announcing his 2014 re-election intentions Tuesday.

In what Furlong described as three "politically quiet but challenging years," crime statistics have trended downward since the 2010 election, which is remarkable given Carson City's economic climate as it continues to deal with the effects of a deep, prolonged recession.

Attention single female homeowners: Women's council offers home improvement help

The Builders Association of Western Nevada Women’s Council, which serves Carson City, Douglas County and Lyon County, will continue its Helping Hands program this year by giving single female homeowners or senior citizens some help with upgrades and repairs to the homes they own.

Helping Hand signups continue through Sept. 12. To be considered for the program applicants:

— Must be a single female homeowner or senior citizen
— Applicant’s name must appear on the assessor’s role.
— Is to be done at your owned residence.
— Can be completed within 1-2 days or less.
