Soroptimist of Carson City host 12th Stroke to Help Fight Breast Cancer golf tournament

Signups are underway for the 12th annual Stroke to Help Fight Breast Cancer golf tournament, Saturday, Sept. 28 at Eagle Valley Golf Course in Carson City.

Hosted by Soroptimist International of Carson City, ASCE, Carson Tahoe Hospital and Tahoe Carson Radiology, the tournament features raffle prizes, contests, games, 2 hole-in-one prizes, closest to the pin and lowest and highest score prizes.

The cost is $85 and includes golf and cart, a continental breakfast and barbecue.

Check-in begins at 8 a.m. with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.

Fight Hunger Show and Shine to benefit Meals on Wheels this weekend at Mills Park

The inaugural Fight Hunger Show and Shine Car Show to benefit Meals on Wheels rolls through Carson City this Labor Day weekend, Saturday and Sunday at Mills Park.

Hosted by the Carson City Senior Center, the event features classic cars, music, raffles, food and trophies. The show runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. Mills Park is located at 1111 E. Williams St. (US Hwy 50 E) in Carson City.

UNR hosts earthquake engineering annual meeting: Quake Summit 2013

Members of a national earthquake simulation research network are at the University of Nevada, Reno today and tomorrow for Quake Summit 2013, an annual scientific meeting highlighting engineering research that reduces the impact of devastating earthquakes and tsunamis.

Titled "Earthquake & Multi-Hazards Resilience: Progress and Challenges," the annual summit of the 14- member George E. Brown Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES), of which the University is a member, is being held in the Joe Crowley Student Union.

Silver Dollar Car Classic shines in final day at Mills Park

New series debuts at OXS Gallery with Hackett-Morgan work- Reception Aug. 15

Las Vegas artist Suzanne Hackett-Morgan’s paintings and prints are on display at the Nevada Arts Council’s OXS Gallery in Carson City beginning August 5. The Arts Council will host an artist talk at 6:15 p.m. and a reception from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15.

“A Western Dependence” features two series of paintings and prints created over the last 14 years by Hackett-Morgan who is drawn to neglected billboards, closed roadside attractions, and other evidence of abandonment in the desert west,” said Susan Boskoff, executive director of the Arts Council.

Carson City will be featured on the C-SPAN network's two channels this weekend after their visit to the capital city earlier this month.

In addition to having feature stories sprinkled in throughout the weekend on the respective networks, both American History TV and Book TV, there will be a block of programming where all of the respective Carson City pieces for their networks will air, said C-SPAN spokeswoman Laura Finch.

'Walking lecture' on July 18 features history of Carson City trees

The presentation begins at the Carson City Library Auditorium, 900 N. Roop St., at 6:00 p.m. with a 20-30 minute slide show presentation about trees of our area by Kyle Horvath. Then, participants will drive over to the Capitol Ground for the rest of the lecture.
