Contra Dance Oct. 12 with Slim & Minnie, Norris Schultz and Vicki Hass: Local Honey Contra Dance Band
Contra Dance with Sierra Contra Dance Society to live music by Local Honey Band on Oct. 13, 2013 in the Old Liberty School (Old Southside School Building / Reno Parks and Rec.), 190 E. Liberty St., Reno.
The dance starts at 7:30PM. New-dancer orientation starts at 7:15PM.
Contra dancing is similar to line dancing and square dancing, and it's always done to LIVE music. It's easy to learn, and a caller calls out all the dance moves. It's fun, sociable and aerobic.
SCDS sponsors a dance every month in Reno during the fall and winter. This month's dance features four long-time Carson City folk musicians who have joined together to form Local Honey. Norris Schultz (acoustic upright bass) and Vicki Hass (fiddle) are well known for their exceptional & popular bluegrass band The Back Forty Band, joining with Slim & Minnie on mandolin and accordion, back by popular demand. About the band name, Minnie explains that she and Slim are beekeepers, "When the Sierra Contra Dance Society asked us for a band name to put on their dance schedule for the dance, we took a cue from the beehive out back."
The wood floor and high ceiling theatre auditorium at Southside School is the perfect venue for contra dancing! Now a Reno Parks and Rec. building, the school has been upgraded and remodeled since being built in 1936 and it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
According to its NRHP nomination, Southside School lwas deemed notable "for its association with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad patterns of our history" and also for "its embodiment of a regional interpretation of the Art Deco style in Nevada."
