The Silver and Snowflakes Festival of Lights annual tree lighting celebration outside the Nevada State Capitol Building in Carson City is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 1. Activities are planned throughout downtown from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. and listed below.

Now that Thanksgiving is behind us, you’ll see twinkling lights appearing everywhere. Carson City doesn’t light up our downtown until next Friday, but if you need an immediate fix of holiday decorations, Minden has got you covered. Candy Cane Lane at the Carson Valley Inn is a custom outdoor drive-thru Christmas light display. ‘Nevada Christmas’ is a private home on Chaparral Court, just off Stephanie Way, and puts the holly jollies into the holiday.

As a recent beneficiary of Nevada Housing Division’s Home is Possible grant assistance to firmly plant resident first-time homebuyers into Nevada soil, I found myself needing to take a fresh look at my old furniture in new rooms. Highway 395 remains closed Tuesday at the Nevada-California state line as firefighters continue to battle the Chris Fire that began Monday west of U.S. Route 395, about five miles north of Sonora Junction near the Chris Flat Campground.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is requesting the public’s assistance in attempting to locate a person of interest in a residential burglary.

A wild fire is actively burning Monday in Mono County on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest’s Bridgeport Ranger District west of US Highway 395 about five miles north of Sonora Junction, near Chris Flat Campground.

Classy Seconds Thrift Store, a revenue arm of Advocates To End Domestic Violence shelter, held its grand opening Saturday at its new Gordon Street building in Carson City.

Executive Director Lisa Lee pushed the doors open at 9 a.m. to greet an eager crowd of dozens who gathered to get their first look and bargains at the thrift store's new home.

Although Veterans Day was observed yesterday, there are several things today that honor our former members of the military. Battle Born Harley Davidson is throwing an appreciation party complete with food trucks. Virginia City’s annual Veterans Day Parade begins at 11 a.m. and the City of Reno will commence their parade after a short ceremony beginning at 11:11 a.m. You’ll find an abundance of craft fairs in Carson City, Carson Valley, and Dayton. A boys and girls pick-up soccer tourney will be held Saturday morning, with donations to going to the seven for the seven teens injured in Thursday's single vehicle rollover crash on Kings Canyon Road.

Organized by Junior Ramirez, a member of Carson Futbol Club, the soccer tournament will be held at Talents Athletic Center: 2749B North Carson Street on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2017 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Teams must be 6 person. The fundraising fee is $50 per team. Teams can be co-ed.

Internationally acclaimed Tintabulations Handbell Ensemble returns to ring in the 2017 holiday season. Join them Sunday, Dec 17 for 'Winter Wanderings', a magically entertaining holiday concert. The concert, free of charge and suitable for all ages, will be held at the St. Paul's Lutheran Family Church in Carson City at 6:30pm.

A GoFundMe page has been established for the seven teens injured in Thursday's single vehicle rollover crash on Kings Canyon Road. The page creator is listed as Jasmyn Riediger, a Carson High School student and friend of the victims.

My sister lives in Sutherland Springs. I go there to see her every Thanksgiving. So, when she marked herself safe on Facebook from the mass shooting at the First Baptist Church, my heart dropped into my stomach. I called her and she relayed who she knew who had been shot. Eight people she knew died, five of them from the same family. Five more were injured. My heart rose to my throat.
