Annual Silver and Snowflakes Festival of Lights kicks off holidays in Carson City
The Silver and Snowflakes Festival of Lights annual tree lighting celebration outside the Nevada State Capitol Building in Carson City is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 1. Activities are planned throughout downtown from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. and listed below.
Last year's festival included the introduction of free horse-drawn sleigh rides. The rides were so successful an additional horse and carriage has been added so more people can enjoy the ride, according to the Carson City Chamber of Commerce and the Silver and Snowflakes Annual Tree Lighting Facebook page.
Santa and the Grinch will be leading the Carson City 5th Grade Music Students Singing Ensemble in holiday carols as the tree is illuminated beginning at 5:30 p.m. Another free performance is taking place at McFadden Plaza featuring the Youth Theater Carson City Show Stoppers at 6:30 p.m.
Also on Dec. 1 is the fifth annual Empty Bowls Project at City Hall. Empty Bowls is an international grassroots effort to fight hunger with its local ties built by artist and potter Robin Levene McGregor of Carson City Art Gallery.
Potters and other craftspeople, educators and others donate and work with the community to create handcrafted bowls. Guests are invited to a simple meal of soup and bread. In exchange for a cash donation, guests are asked to keep a bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world.
The money raised is donated to an organization working to end hunger and food insecurity. Here in Carson City, the organization is FISH. See the Empty Bowls Facebook page here.
