I’m going to suggest that you keep this weekend’s plans flexible. There’s only a chance of rain, but the chance of it showing up at the wrong time is always high. The very early morning is best spent watching the hot air balloons against the Reno skyline, but you’ll probably want a sweater for the pre-dawn chill. Head up the hill to Virginia City this weekend. If you’ve never been to the annual International Camel Races, you’ve been missing out. Keep reading, there’s something for everyone on this list. Find your fun.

Carson High School invites students and staff to unplug from technology

CARSON CITY — Next week, Sept. 11-15, Carson High School will encourage students and staff to disconnect from technology to better reconnect with each other. The CHS Social Emotional Learning Committee and school administrators decided to dedicate a week to the cause.

Monday, Labor Day 2017: Things to do in Carson City and beyond

Labor Day commemorates the men and women whose sweat made this such a great country and has been a national holiday since 1894. Celebrate this unofficial end-of-summer with a trip to the lake, a backyard bar-be-que, the parade in Virginia City, or one of the many fun events going on around town. Head over to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church for their annual Inter-faith Potluck Picnic and don’t forget to bring some silverware and something yummy to share.

Sunday, Sept. 3: Things to do around Carson City and Beyond

The great thing about Labor Day weekend is that it just keeps going. The Best in the West Rib Cook-off offers up family fun, live music, and plenty of bar-be-qued delights all the way through Monday. For those with younger kids, consider a day at Mills Park. This is the last weekend for summertime train rides through the cottonwoods. Join Muscle Powered at Silver Saddle Ranch by the Carson River for a bike or hike this morning. Bring water and a camera, you never know what wildlife will make an appearance.

Slinkard Fire Update: U.S. Highway 395 reportedly open, fire at 9,000 acres

UPDATE 11:30AM: Acccording to the National Wildfire Coordinating Group web site provided by the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center, the Slinkard Fire has officially burned more than 7,880 acres and is currently about 20 percent contained at this hour.
More than 600 firefighting personnel are on scene, including 15 crews, four helicopters, 56 engines, two bulldozers, and 11 water tenders.
U.S. Highway 395 is reported to be open in both directions. However, both the Nevada and California highway patrols remain on scene to monitor the situation.

The Slinkard Fire near Topaz Lake has grown to about 9,000 acres in size, but firefighters have achieved at least 10 percent containment on the blaze as of about 9 a.m. Saturday morning, according updated reports from all three major television news stations in Reno.

Fire crews respond to brush fire in area of Six Mile Canyon Road

UPDATE 8:34PM: Six Mile Fire is roughly 250 acres and 40 percent contained, Storey County officials announced Friday night via social media. The fire will be staffed throughout the night. Weather conditions are favorable and no structures or communities are threatened at this time. Six Mile Canyon Road remains closed and is patrolled by the Sheriff's Office to maintain safety.

UPDATE 2:47PM: A Carson City Fire Department brush unit was called up Friday afternoon to help fight the Six Mile Fire located in Storey County near Six Mile Canyon Road.

UPDATE 2:20PM: The Six Mile Fire has grown to 150 acres, burning in grass and brush, according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center. Multiple fire units are on the scene with air and ground support. According to Storey County's Facebook page, there are no evacuations in place and no structures threatened at this time.

Carson City Library to celebrate eclipse with activities, telescope, 200 pairs of safety glasses

UPDATE SUNDAY, AUG. 20: For Monday's eclipse program, the Carson City Library is taking walk ins, however they will not be guaranteed eclipse safety glasses. The library will have other activities available and a telescope with a solar filter.
On Sunday afternoon, the Carson City Library is giving out a VERY limited amount at 1pm, line up is at 12:30pm. Must have their library card and only one per person. See the Carson City Library Facebook page here.
