The Brewery Arts Center in Carson City is holding a grand opening Saturday for its newest endeavor, Expresso Yourself Cafe, an art experience with splashes of inspiration and creativity.

The Pine Nut Mountains Trail Association is pleased to announced that it is a grant recipient from the 2018 Nevada Off–Highway Vehicle Registration Program for use in supporting numerous clean up events.

Matthew Ingbar of Carson City made a $3,000 donation Thursday to the Parks and Recreation Department program Movers and Doers — on behalf of the community following an outpouring of monetary support after his trike was stolen last November.

Sunday offers some great options for a variety of interests. Learn about the Nevada State Children’s Home during the 1940s and 50s at a presentation hosted by the Carson City Historical Society. A free concert offered by the Capital City Community Band is perfect for all ages, and your donations will help the all-volunteer troupe cover the costs of their many free events throughout the year.

This week's edition of It's Your City is about love stories and films, and short films we'd love to see made that are love stories. The Carson City area digital arts community known as Wired Wednesday, in partnership with the Brewery Arts Center, will host an all-new film competition this year in the spirit of Valentine's Day.

Carson City Art Gallery features an artist of the month, as many of you already know.

Meet the artist and join us as we celebrate the art of Kortney Beth on Friday, Feb. 2 from 4 to 7:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

Sunny days in the fifties are okay for spring, but we still need some winter to come our way. Take advantage of the warmer weather during a Winter Hike along Carson Valley’s Pinion Trail with Muscle Powered. Song and dance kids will want to audition for the upcoming performance of ‘Willy Wonka, Jr.’ If you’re a fan of song, but possibly too old to join the Youth Theater Carson City cast, check out the monthly jam in Silver City at their historic School House. All instruments are welcome, in addition to vocalists and those who just want to listen.

Carson Valley Middle School eighth-grader Jacob Pipho, from Carson City, placed first in the National Radon Poster Contest, after taking home first place in the Nevada Radon Poster Contest. He competed against student winners from several other states and will receive $1,000 for his poster, “The Element of Surprise.”

The mountains are finally wearing a beautiful winter coat, with even a little more to fall before tomorrow, but Carson City just got a dusting. That means the roads are slick, so give yourself some extra travel time until the sun gets a chance to melt it off. The Roska Collective wants to help you kick off your weekend early with Techno and Tequila at Battle Born Social downtown. The Bella Vita Bistro in the Carson Mall adds Thirsty Thursday Karaoke to the mix.

Carson City Democrats will be hosting our inspiring Capital Blue Dinner and awards ceremony on February 1st at the Gold Dust West Casino. The featured speaker is candidate for Nevada Governor, Chris G (Giunchigliani). Other 2018 candidates will be in attendance including Kate Marshall, candidate for Lieutenant Governor. Marlene Lockard will be Mistress of Ceremonies.

It’s play-off Sunday and we are all picking the teams that we want to cheer for in the big game. You can watch the Jaguars battle the Patriots, then the Eagles attack the Vikings. You have one last chance to commune with the monks of India. There is a workshop at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Coincidentally the classic sci-fi movie, Alien, is playing at Galaxy Theater the same times. Get a glimpse inside the historic Wungnema house at the east end of Mills Park during the afternoon’s Open House.

Ready, set, crawl. The Brew Crew’s monthly pub crawl kicks off from the Laxalt Plaza next to the Nugget and includes up several downtown area taverns and restaurants. If your new year’s resolution includes volunteering, the Muscle Powered Trash Mob is a quick, but mighty, helping hand. Learn about the future of the Stewart Indian School Historic Site during an encore lecture at the Nevada State Museum. Flashback to Beatle-mania at the Brewery Arts Center or karaoke at Battleborn Social are just some of your nightlife options.

The Carson City Classic Cinema Club is a non-profit group that meets monthly to enjoy a classic film, delve into American Cinematic history, and raise money to help youth participate in the arts.

Come join us for a Winter Hike to Pinyon Trail in Carson Valley. This gently rolling 5.2 miles intermediate hike provides majestic views of Carson Valley, Jobs's Peak and the beautiful surrounding mountains. To carpool to the trailhead, meet at 9:00 AM at the north end of the Target store parking lot on Jack's Valley Road. The local nonprofit Muscle Powered is known in the community as an organization that promotes walking and biking as healthy, green transportation alternatives. According to their website, Muscle Powered's motto is "Walk, Bike, Build," and along with building comes maintenance.

Krysta Scripter, a 2011 CHS graduate, answered the Facebook message of her former Freshman Honors English teacher by returning to her alma mater as a guest speaker to share about how she went from wanting a career as a writer and photographer to being published in The Fresno Bee, Verily women’s magazine, Reno.com, and Babeswhohustle.com just to name a few.

Playing in the snow probably isn’t an option for this weekend, but Singing in the Rain sure is. The kids of Youth Theater Carson City present a junior adaptation of the musical favorite this weekend and next. The Experimental Aircraft Association hosts ‘Young Eagle’ flights every few months at the Carson Airport to give kids 8 – 17 a plane ride to remember. Help out the Dayton Food Bank during their ‘Stuff-a-Cop-Car’ food drive at the Smith’s in Dayton; unexpired non-perishables of all kinds are appreciated.
