High Sierra Swing Dance Club presents its monthly dance party Sept. 27 at the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom, 449 W. King St., Carson City. At 6:30 p.m., Tim Renner will teach a lesson in intermediate West Coast swing. Social dance is 7:30-10 p.m. Partners are not required. Lesson $7 for HSSDC and any swing dance club members or $10 for nonmembers; dance $7 for members of swing clubs and $10 for nonmembers. Free beginner lesson starts at 6:30 p.m.

Youth Theatre Carson City to hold Thursday workshop and Saturday auditions for Annie, Jr.

Youth Theatre Carson City will hold an audition for Annie Jr., the classic musical this Saturday, Sept. 6 beginning at 10 a.m. in the gym at the Carson City Community Center located at 851 E. William Street.

Carson City and Lake Tahoe area road report through Sept. 7

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of Sept. 2-7, 2014. Crews will be striping roadways throughout the city weekdays between the hours of 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Minor delays are expected on roadways that are being striped while the work occurs.

Nevada 150 Sesquicentennial events lined up through September

The deadline to submit applications for Official and Signature Nevada 150 events will be 5:00 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12. Over 400 events have been held across the Silver State since Nevada Day 2013, in celebration of Nevada’s Sesquicentennial, with many more ahead. Kingsbury Grade closed to through traffic beginning Tuesday

State Route 207, Kingsbury Grade in Douglas County will be closed near Daggett Summit beginning Tuesday, Sept. 2 through sometime in October as the second scheduled construction closure takes place for the Nevada Department of Transportation’s Kingsbury Grade Pavement Reconstruction Project.

Nevada Day 150 celebration features new events, 'Steampunk Ball' and Famfest

Nevada's steam driven Sesquicentennial celebration culminates in Carson City with the Saturday, Nov. 1 Nevada Day Parade. This year’s parade theme, “Happy 150th Birthday, Nevada” encourages Silver State revelers to salute Nevada’s Oct. 31 1864 admission to the union as the 36th state.

"We at Nevada Day are very pleased to be adding three new events to this year's Nevada Day Celebration, in addition to bringing back reoccurring favorites," said Nevada Day committee president Ken Hamilton.

Tahoe Peace Concert brings celebration to Sand Harbor

Award winning performers from San Francisco, Los Angeles, Santa Cruz, Reno and Tahoe will grace the stage for Trails and Vistas World Concert at Sand Harbor State Park at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 6.

The World Concert, an original blend of diverse musicians, aerialists and dancers, is produced by Trails and Vistas, a Truckee, CA-based nonprofit organization dedicated to producing inspiring art events in nature, in collaboration with the Truckee Tahoe Peace Project.

 

HopeFest free outdoor concert tonight to benefit local cancer patients

UPDATE: The Carson Tahoe Health Foundation is pleased to host HopeFest 2014, an outdoor concert tonight, Friday, offering free admission with all sales on food, drinks and raffle tickets directly benefitting local cancer patients.

Nationally famed folk-rock band, Antsy McClain and The Trailer Park Troubadours known for their cowboy jazz, Tex-Mex groove and soulful R&B dance tunes will be the headlining performers. The event runs from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Carson Tahoe Cancer Center located at 1535 Medical Parkway, Carson City.

Nevada Performance Academy adds career workshops to its tuition-free curriculum

Nevada Performance Academy will be adding another dimension to their program by offering workshops to give kids the chance to meet professionals in other fields of interest such as medicine, engineering, accounting and more.

Parents interested in enrollment or just seeking information are being asked to attend and bring nessecary documents such as birth certificate, utility bill, immunization records, and I.D, should they decide to enroll as space is limited to only 24 children per grade level.

Carson City Jazz and Beyond Summer Music Festival launches Aug. 1

The Jazz and Beyond Festival, Aug. 1-17 in Carson City, embraces numerous artists and highlights various venues in and around the Capital City and includes such genres as: Bluegrass, Blues, Middle-Eastern music and much more.

The styles of musical interpretations are as unique as the settings — offering exciting experience for all to enjoy. Last year, the festival featured 60 performances and over 100 performers. Event Promoters expect to once again exceed the expectations of attendees with an amazing lineup.

Enrollment underway for Nevada Performance Academy, fall opening in the works

The Nevada Performance Academy plans to open this fall despite the passing of founder and former Nevada state superintendent, Gene Paslov who died June 8, 2014 at the age of 80.

The academy currently has 70 applications and is seeking to enroll another 50 students grades 7 through 12 who want to be a part of an innovative school that will work towards a student’s academic success as well as cater to their talents and special interests. The school is located at 1600 Snyder Avenue in Carson City.

July Jazz Under the Stars Mile High Jazz Band at Comma Courtyard Tuesday

The Mile High Jazz Band with vocalist Sheryl Adams present san evening of "Big-band Jazz Under the Stars" at Comma Courtyard on Tuesday, July 8, 7:30-9:30 p.m.

The courtyard is adjacent to Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson Street, which is across the street from the state legislature building in Carson City. Admission is $5 general, free for age 18 and under.

High Sierra Swing Dance Club’s monthly dance party will be the Silver Dollar Car Classic Sock Hop, 6-10 pm July 26 at the Carson Nugget’s Grand Ballroom, 507 N. Carson St. Vintage 1950s-‘60s dance music will be played, and costumes of that era are encouraged. The fun includes dance, hula hoop, costume and limbo contests and door prizes. Cost is $5 for car show participants, $7 for members of HSSDC and Reno’s Biggest Little Swing Dance Club, $10 general for individuals and $15 for couples.

Car Show Continues After 30 Years

Karson Kruzers will be hosting the 30th annual Run What Cha Brung car show Saturday at Fuji Park Fairgrounds, with a kick-off celebration and dance Friday night at the Carson Mall.

Ronald McDonald, Marilyn, and Elvis party it up at grand opening event

When Patricia Cabrera and her family walked through the doors Tuesday night, it was to a loud cheer from every crew member: “Welcome to McDonalds!”

Cabrera just so happened to be the first “official” customer of the new McDonalds on Winnie Lane and Carson Streets. She was among the 300 first customers, all of which received a free Big Mac per week for a year. Other prizes were given to customers as well: gift cards, coupons for free coffee, free ice cream cones. These gifts were the reason hundreds — well over that first 300 — lined up hours before the store officially opened at 6 p.m.

Nevada Arts Council names 2015 Nevada Heritage Award winners

The Folklife Program of the Nevada Arts Council has named Las Vegas residents Gary and Sheldeen Haleamau as recipients of the 2015 Nevada Heritage Award. The Haleamaus are recognized for preserving, perpetuating and presenting their native Hawaiian culture throughout Nevada.

August auditions for Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company's 'My Fair Lady'

The Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company is distributing audition information for the Lerner and Loewe masterwork, My Fair Lady, to play in eight performances this November at the Carson City Community Center.
Auditions will be the second week of August. Specific times, location and information on what to prepare for auditions will be emailed to those who sign up for auditions.
