Nevada Day Pow Wow 2014 begins Friday at the Carson Colony

The Carson Colony in Carson City invites everyone to its 31st Annual La Ka Lel Be Pow Wow during Nevada Day Weekend.

Witness the Grand Entry at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 31; 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1; or 12 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2. The event is held in the Carson Colony Gym, 2900 South Curry Street.

Native American tribes from all over the United States and Canada come to participate.

CHS Homecoming Week 2014 wrap-up

Homecoming week 2014 at Carson High School said its last goodbye late last Saturday night. The week included bonfires, dances, football, royalty, flash mobs and just about everything in between.

El Dia de Muertos or Day of the Dead

The Nevada State Museum celebrates El Día de Muertos or Day of the Dead from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2014. Day of the Dead is a multicultural celebration of life through death. In this wholesome family holiday, participants learn to deal with death in a healthy way by celebrating the lives of dear ones that has passed away. The holiday has become very popular in recent years and is celebrated in schools, homes, community centers and museums in all 50 states.

Nevada 150 events lined up through the end of October

Many celebrations are scheduled throughout the Silver State in the month of October. These Nevada 150 events celebrate all things Nevada and help bring awareness to the 150th Anniversary of Statehood. The following events are held Oct. 16 through 30. Highlights of statewide Nevada Day weekend events are forthcoming.

On Friday Oct. 17, come watch the Nevada 150 Pony Express Delivery, on the south steps of the Nevada State Capitol Building in Carson City at 3:30 p.m.

T- Minus Two Weeks Until Homecoming

It's almost that time of year again at Carson High School. That one week of school where everybody dresses like a fashion-less hippy, has wild date proposals and bonds the student body closer as a school. This of course would be the one and only Homecoming week.

This year's homecoming theme is "Around the World" and the date is set for October 14th-October 18th. It would appear that Homecoming is looking very promising thanks to the leadership of this year's Master of Ceremonies: Jared Hearn and Sarah Christl.

With this year's theme, "Let's Light Up The Town" The 94th Genoa Candy Dance runs this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 27-28, 2014.

Historic radio series that chronicles Nevada folklife now online for Nevada 150 celebration

Nearly 30 years ago, the Nevada Arts Council and its partners created a radio series that would chronicle the fabric of Nevada folk heritage from experts in local arts that include bit and spur making, the language of gaming, neon glass blowing, cradleboarding and more. In celebration of the state’s 150th birthday, the full 13-episode series “Home Means Nevada 1986: Folklife in the Silver State” has been digitized.

Kingsbury Grade to open temporarily this weekend for Genoa Candy Dance

State Route 207 Kingsbury Grade will temporarily re-open to through traffic this weekend beginning Friday for the Genoa Candy Dance. The grade has been closed to through traffic as part of the Nevada Department of Transportation’s Kingsbury Grade Pavement Reconstruction Project.

The roadway will open to through traffic by noon on Friday, Sept. 26 and close again at around 9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, according to NDOT.

Carson City and Lake Tahoe area road report through Sept. 28

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of Sept. 22-28, 2014. Robinson Street between Curry and Carson Streets will be open in an eastbound direction only on Monday, Sept. 22, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The road will be closed in both directions on Tuesday, Sept. 23, and Thursday, Sept. 24, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Detours will be provided.

Nevada's steam driven Sesquicentennial celebration culminates in Carson City with the Saturday, Nov. 1 Nevada Day Parade. This year’s parade theme, “Happy 150th Birthday, Nevada” encourages Silver State revelers to salute Nevada’s Oct. 31 1864 admission to the union as the 36th state.

Carson City and Lake Tahoe area road report through Sept. 21

Here is the Carson City area road report for Sept. 15-21, 2014. Beginning Monday through Thursday the Carson City I-580 Freeway will have a single lane closure in the northbound direction due to maintenance between Fairview Drive and Carson Street from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. During this time, the speed limit will be reduced to 55 mph.
