Brush fire breaks out in Johnson Lane area; Carson City responds to backyard fire

UPDATE 10:37PM: Forward progress of the fire off of Stephanie Way has been stopped, according to a battalion chief on scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

East Fork Fire and Tahoe Douglas firefighters were called Thursday evening to a brush fire burning in the Johnson Lane area near Stephanie Way in Carson Valley. Also, there was a report of a backyard fire on Brown Street in Carson City.

Happy Sunday Carson City! There are plenty of activities and events around the Carson City region to help transition back into the work week. The third and final day of Carson City Off-Road cruises to downtown Carson City with Pro Men and Women Backcountry races starting at 7:30 a.m. Muscle Powered will hold its weekly Sunday bicycle ride at Fremont Elementary School from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

A Bumpy Ride across Carson Skies: an overly-dramatized recount of flying in a single-engine plane on a breezy day

The first time I rode in a small plane was at the Carson City Airport Open house. I was probably 5, my brother probably 8, along with our dad who took us to geek out over the WWII planes and tanks.

The pilot offered us a ride, and we climbed aboard a small orange-and-white plane with a bench seat in the back and two seats in the front. My dad sat beside the pilot, my brother and I strapped in the back.

About thirty seconds after take-off, my brother and I noticed something horrific to our child-minds: in the back of the cockpit, buzzing around beside us, was a bee.

Carson City Off-Road day two: Capital 50, 35 Backcountry Rides converge to state capital

Hundreds of riders increased their mileage during the second day of Carson City Off-Road on Saturday in downtown Carson City.

The Capital 35 and Capital 50 Backcountry Rides explored Northern Nevada's beautiful landscape, passing through Lake Tahoe, Washoe Valley and Carson Valley along the way.

ANDY'S RIDE is a suicide awareness ride for our friend and local dentist Andy Getas. Andy began his practice in Carson Valley in 1983, later moving to Carson City. Devoted to his family and his patients, he was an accomplished drummer, loved jazz and cycling. Andy lost his life in 2015.

Hosted by Epic Rides, the fourth annual Carson City Off-Road will cruise the local mountainsides and the streets of the capital city's downtown this Friday through Sunday.

Spectacular cloud formation during sunset Tuesday over western Nevada skies

Tuesday evening made for spectacular photography as the sun was setting throughout western Nevada and Sierra. These photos of the wave of standing lenticular clouds were taken by Nicole Hooper in Dayton. The first three show the range of the cloud formations and the fourth photo was taken Wednesday morning, where Hooper notes "this morning was pretty too."

Nevada governor signs $5 tourist surcharge at Lake Tahoe in Douglas County

A new law was signed by Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak that establishes a $5 tourism fee on the per-night rate for rental lodgings in the Lake Tahoe, Stateline area of Douglas County. The new law takes effect July 1 and had bipartisan support at the conclusion of the Nevada State Legislature.
