Carson Valley

A series of thunderstorms moved into the Carson City and Carson Valley area Wednesday afternoon and evening bringing lightning and a few brush fires to the region. As of Wednesday 8:20 p.m. the storms had moved out of the Carson City, Carson Valley area. More thunderstorms are expected Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

On Saturday, Sept. 14, at 10 a.m. the Dangberg Home Ranch Celtic Faire will be the final special event of the 2019 Dangberg Summer Festival. A celebration of the Irish, Scottish and Welsh people who helped to settle Carson Valley will offer a day filled with entertainment and activities for all ages.

Join us for a Farm to Fork Tour in Douglas County on September 11. Planned and hosted by University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Educator, Lindsay Chichester.

The day will begin at 10am at Jacobs Family Berry Farm with a tour and berry tasting, followed by a steak lunch at JT Basque, a tour and tasting at Bently Heritage, and conclude with a Bently Ranch Tour.

CARSON CITY — Southbound U.S. 395 will be reduced to one lane in northern Carson Valley this Wednesday, Sept. 4 as the Nevada Department of Transportation repaves sections of roadway surface.

Watching them gather, wearing pajamas, wrapped in blankets, and celebrating the beginning of their senior year, the Class of 2019-2020 gathered together at 6:00 a.m. Aug. 30 on the bleachers of the Carson High School football field to watch the sun rise; it is the beginning of their last year at CHS, and, for some of them, their last year as students who were raised within the Carson City School District, students who went from kindergarten at Mark Twain Elementary to Carson Middle School and have spent the last three years at CHS.

Casinos in the Carson City area had a gaming revenue increase by nearly 3.8 percent in July, while gaming establishments at south shore Lake Tahoe increase by nearly 17 percent, according to a report released Wednesday by the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

Marching forward to the midweek, Wednesday, August 28, 2019 will continue to bring sunny skies with a chance of isolated thunderstorms around the capital city. Ahead for the day includes NNDA's Business Edge breakfast at Carson Valley Inn, A "Lunch and Learn" workshop at Carson Nugget, art showings, a Chautauqua presentation of "Sisters of the Sage" at Dangberg Historic Park, Salsa dancing and more.

The Northern Nevada Development Authority will host its Business Edge breakfast series Wednesday in Douglas County. The topic is "Powering Business in Nevada" and features NV Energy CEO Doug Cannon.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a mountain of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days, including HopeFest9 on Friday, dirt bike races at Fuji Park, a job fair at Eagle Valley Children's Home, and the final weekend of the Jazz and Beyond festival and Levitt AMP outdoor concert series at the Brewery Arts Center.

Coming up on Thursday, August 22, 2019, we can expect continued sunny skies with a daytime near 90. Among upcoming events: Thursday is the final day of the Jukebox International Film Festival at the Carson City Community Center. Take in a film screening and talk to the filmmakers who made them. There's a Polka Dot Powerhouse Carson City lunch connect at Red's Old 395 Grill, plus Food Truck Thursday at Mills Park and a volunteer expo hosted by Leadership Douglas County. There's also a discussion about aviation history and trends at the Nevada State Museum, a Carson City GOP information meeting on Block Chain technology, Jazz and Beyond music festival events and more. CARSON CITY — The fundraising arm of Western Nevada College — WNC Foundation — held its fourth annual Reach for the Stars Gala on Aug. 10, raising more than $75,000 to benefit students seeking higher education.

August closes with a Chautauqua presentation “Sisters of the Sage” which will highlight the lives of Annie H. Martin, Lillian V. Finnegan and Anna N. Harris at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, August 28, at 6:30 p.m.

Hello fellow anglers, Just returned from a couple weeks of fishing from our local area to the Rogue River Valley in Oregon. The day we arrived, they had a wild fire that started at 200 acres and by the next day it was over 10,000. Grants pass was smokey and hard to breath, so Renee, my cousin Steve and I ventured to Brookings OR to do some salmon fishing.

CARSON CITY — Single lane closures and travel delays will be in place on the Carson Valley side of Kingsbury Grade, State Route 207, beginning Aug. 19 as the Nevada Department of Transportation resurfaces the highway.

Carson Valley comedian Kat Simmons will offer her stand up comedy workshop only once this year. The six-week workshop will be held on Monday nights, 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 7 through Nov. 11, 2019, at the COD Casino in Minden.

The 2019 Carson City Fair finished its third year on the last Sunday in July with a record number of participants, exhibits and spectators. The Fair’s claim to fame is a focus on local youth livestock shows and traditional exhibits. This year, most people didn’t miss the carnival, due to the free games provided on the grassy area.

Heading into Tuesday, August 13, there's a galaxy of events lined up, beginning at midnight with a meteor shower watch party at WNC's Jack C. Davis Observatory. When the sun arrives there's fitness events, a book talk at the Nevada State Library and Archives, outdoor Carson City jazz festival happenings at Comma Coffee and Bob McFadden Plaza, family movie night at the library and more. THURSDAY UPDATE: Low pressure approaching northeast California and western Nevada will bring another chance for showers and thunderstorms today, with a few showers or storms possibly lingering into Friday. Dry weather and below average temperatures are expected for the weekend with gusty winds Friday and Saturday.

The National Weather Service in Reno says thunderstorms have begun to Wednesday afternoon, mainly near and east of US-395 and south of I-80.
